Personal Narrative: A Career As A School Counselor

Before coming into this program, my perception of a school counselor was someone who helped students solve their problems; someone who helped students make wise decisions about their career development; someone who helped students how to cope with the everyday pressures that students face at home or school, etc. After interviewing a person who has firsthand experience in the field, shed some new light onto what goes on in the dark places that I could not see behind closed doors. Being a school counselor means that every day is different and brings new challenges. To me, a typical day for a school counselor is not predictable. It can be completely different than what one has originally planned for that day. There is not a day that is similar to another day, and there is never a dull moment. Their role aides in the fostering of proper emotional, social, scholarly, and career growth of their students. Part of their job description is to help students to become well-rounded adults for the future. Aside from counseling, school counselors take on the role of many hats on a daily basis. Their school responsibilities include lunch duty, hallway duty, testing coordinator and a vast of other tasks that involve other stakeholders at hand. School counselors are the glue that helps keep students together. After conducting this interview, the respect I have for school counselors is phenomenal. Despite the huge roles that school counselors tackle every day, they are proven to be super heroes! Going into this profession is going to take a lot of my time. For this reason, it is imperative that take excellent care of myself so that I can provide and function at high capacity wherever needed in the field of school
