Every day, whether it is through our families, classes, churches, regional location, workplace, or the media we obtain unique views on how we feel the world should work in politics. Personally, during my lifetime these factors of political socialization, or the process of becoming politically aware, have led me to become a very liberal person for the majority of political issues. There is one view of mine that tends to lean toward the conservative side, but other than that from abortion to welfare I have a liberal ideology. My experiences with my close-knit family, conservative population at school, and the media are the largest influences that have shaped me into who I am today, and why I have these strong views on economic and social …show more content…
issues in the United States. Illegal immigration is quite the controversial topic.
I grew up in an interracial family with a father who is African-American and a mother who is Mexican-American. My maternal grandmother is from Mexico and she has always told me stories about how bad it has gotten in certain regions of the country. This is the exact reason why I feel so strongly on the issue of illegal immigration. My grandmother worked her hardest so that she could get out of her town and make a better life for herself than her parents had, but this is not always the case for every person. She lived in a household of two parents and thirteen children, where her father could barely put food on the table for them. It is difficult to find a job in Mexico, or any other Latin-American country, that will pay a sufficient wage to feed that many people. The United States offers so many opportunities that could easily help these individuals, but due to the difficulty of crossing the border they cannot. I personally know that two of my cousins live here illegally and they went through so much to get here and give their children a better life. I want them to feel as if they can live here freely, but without compassion and easier access to our country it will never happen. My family life has definitely been the deciding factor in how I feel about immigration because I can so closely relate with the topic, and I know how a few of the immigrants
feel. Surprisingly, the school system had a lot to do with my opinion of the death penalty. In seventh grade we were given an assignment where we had to choose a side of the death penalty and persuade the audience to correspond with our side. I remember watching a documentary about the death penalty and how one man was killed when in fact he was innocent. Death is something that you cannot take back, and even just one mistake in my opinion should be enough of a reason for it to be taken out entirely. During this assignment I also felt like murdering someone for murder is not justifiable, and if anything is showing citizens that if our government is killing people then so can they. Over time things I have seen in the media about the death penalty have strengthened my beliefs against it. It was a combination of school and television that truly opened my eyes to how inhumane the death penalty truly is. Another strong liberal view of mine is on same sex marriage. My mom has always been very respectful and open about other people’s views, and so I know I have adopted my opinion on homosexuals from her. No matter if one of our family members comes out as gay, or there is someone battling with it on television, my mom is always very supportive of people being themselves. There is nothing in the Constitution stating that there may not be marriage between a man and a man or a woman and a woman. Therefore, in my eyes, there is no debate on whether or not it should be legal or not. There is also a lack of religion in my family that I feel adds to the fact that I accept gay marriage because I am not a part of the church. My mother’s strong compassion and acceptance, as well as the lack of religion in my family caused my liberal opinions on same sex marriage. On the other side of the spectrum I do have one conservative view that sticks out. I do not believe that we should do everything in our power to fight climate change and global warming. My family has never talked about the environment, and although I learned about it in school it was never an in-depth analysis. I lean more toward the conservative side here because I have a lack of knowledge about the issue. Therefore, I feel as if it is not very important to attempt to save it. I also feel as if there is no proof that changing our actions will truly save the Earth. There is a lack of conversation in my family, schools, and even media about the environment which leads me to believe it is not as important as others make it seem. In all, my political ideology is liberal, with only one view being conservative. Other than the topics mentioned above I also side with liberals on topics such as abortion, taxes, welfare, healthcare, and an active government. Each of those issues have also been influenced by my family, friends, school, or the media. Due to the fact that media is always changing I am learning more about my political ideology and strengthening the facts behind my thoughts. My ideology will continue to flourish with the new things I learn in my every day life, especially being a freshman in college. My progressive ways will most likely never change, but there is always room for growth in the new and innovative world.
Anthropologists conduct research in order to answer specific questions about a particular group of people and their culture. Most anthropologists use fieldwork to collect their data, which is then interpreted within their ethnographic writing. When collecting their data, anthropologists use many different approaches such as developing relationships with their informants, but do not illustrate these relationships in their actual writing. Anthropologists Claire E. Sterk and Philippe Bourgois are two of the anthropologists that emphasize their relationships and the importance of gaining trust of their informants in their perspective articles studied. In Bourgois’ article “Crack in Spanish Harlem” and Sterk’s article “Tricking and Tripping: Fieldwork on Prostitutes in the Era of AIDS”, both anthropologists write about their engagement with their informants, but do so in different ways. Sterk focuses much of her ethnography on the relationships formed, and the information and trust gained as a result; Bourgois, however, spends only a small fraction of his ethnography on his relationships. Both illustrate information about their perspective-studied cultures, the difficulties faced in gathering their fieldwork, but they differ in the amount of information they chose to include in their actual ethnographies.
Millions of citizens around the United States, at some point in their lifetime, obtain a political ideology. Typically, their political values are influenced by their parents. Political scientists have identified that around age eleven, children begin to develop political opinion. According to Wilson’s, American Government: Institutions and Policies, 91% of a high school senior class indentified with the same party as their parents (American Government 158). I can attest to this since I in fact have the same party association as my parents. Ever since I was young, I categorized myself as a Democrat due to the fact that my elders were. However, as I have matured I am able to recognize the beliefs and ideologies that followers of certain parties possess. Since I have been more exposed to the political arena I am able analyze the issues more critically and hence I continuously question whether I should classify myself as a Democrat or Republican.
This essay is an ethnographic study of Whole Foods Market which is located in Kensington, London. Whole Foods Market is a niche supermarket that sells high quality organic and natural products at high prices. In this essay, I will provide a brief orientation of ethics with regards to the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility - macroethics and Business Ethics - microethics and the theoretical frameworks of consequentialism, deontology and virtue ethics. I will be using deontology framework in ethics devised by Immanuel Kant to assess if the marketing strategy and the products sold at Whole Foods Market support their principle of ‘organic and natural’.
Have you ever stopped to think how much you would do for your family? You should think about what Immigrants do for their family. Immigrants cross the border everyday. Americans think that they just "walk over", "no big deal." You never hear the real story; you never hear how they are treated. Once they actually get across, they get to live like they deserve, lavishly, right? That's far from the truth. They cross the border and get low-paying jobs (usually 2 dollars an hour) and that's still better then what they would receive in their homeland. Isn't that something? Some Americans say that Immigrants are taking away jobs. What American would be willing to work for 2 dollars an hour as a janitor or maid? Not many. One American women, in the video Natives: Immigrant Bashing on the Border, said "Immigrants come in the US, take away jobs from "us" and then live on welfare." Americans need to look at the whole picture instead of one part of it or what the media tells us. Immigrants are not taking away jobs from Americans.
As a Hispanic in American, I can relate not because I felt it but because my father is an immigrant from Mexico. He left his family behind to find a better job to send back home. He was not only responsible for his family but for his parents and brothers, and sisters. When he was 12 years old, he left his family in the middle of the night to fend for himself. His thought was that he leaving would be one less mouth to feed. Little did he know that his father went after him for almost an year until he found him. My dad was very lucky to meet someone that took him and save his money from working the fields. When he met up with my grandfather, he had enough money for the whole family to move to northern Mexico where there were more jobs.
My family has become very concerned with the current hostile political climate. Although their status has always been a concern it has never caused so much fear and uncertainty as it is today. Mexican and Mexican Americans have been a target for discrimination for many years as explained at the beginning of this section. It is unbelievable to think that what people of my ethnic group experienced about 90 years ago, is still happening today. It is clear through my parent’s story that their main reason for coming to this country was to be able to provide a better future for their families back home and their children. Which was something that would not be possible in their beloved country. My heart breaks thinking that my cousin who was brought to this country when she was three months old runs the risk of being deported to a country that she has never lived in. This is her country, and just as the Mexican and Mexican American farm workers who were deported in the 1930’s all she wants is a chance at a better
Ethnography is a research method used to explore different cultures from a personal view. Many anthropologists have sought to use ethnography as their main study method because of its specificity and opportunity to get hands on. Those that participate in ethnographies are expected to accurately record detailed accounts of the society in which they are staying, but at the same time maintain a critical distance.
I am very religious and a huge believer in God, since childhood. My grandma has played a big role making me religious person. I remember in my childhood my grandma used to take me to the temple with her every day. From that time, I am attached very strongly toward the god. There was temple close to my house in India. I used to go to temple with my grandma two times a day morning and evening. These two times in temple saints (Hindu monks) do the “Aarti” (Aarti is waving lighted wicks before the sacred images to infuse the flames with the Deities’ love, energy, and blessings). “Aarti” means get rid of the darkness from life.
Since the early 2000’s illegally immigration increased drastically; more and more people from Latin America have immigrating to this country. Not like the Ellis Island, where immigrants were welcomed in one station, this time they have multiple access where there not so welcome, “Entering the United States illegally is risky; unauthorized immigrants must either use falsified documents to deceive an immigration official, come ashore by boat without being detected, or sneak across the nation 's land borders with Mexico or Canada—which the government spends about $18 billion a year to protect” (Immigration Policy). Most of this people risk their life in order to come here, but why? They are after the American dream. The countries where these people are coming from have little to zero opportunities; most of them live in poverty forcing them to take the long journey to the American dream. This journey has many effects, it not only affects America but also those countries from where people are immigrating. Some people in the U.S. believe that immigrants are destroying the nation, “The population today includes a far higher percentage (12 percent) of foreign-born Americans than in recent decades, yet the economy is strong, with higher total gross domestic product (GDP), higher GDP per person, higher productivity per worker, and more Americans working than
I have experience the discrimination of immigration since I was nine years old. My parents and I arrived to the United States back in 2004, since then the fear has taken over our lives. I also know that immigrants risk their lives trying arrive on a land in hope of escaping from becoming victims of crimes, for protection, and the hope that their children will reach the American dream. They even hide in trucks and a few immigrants are luck to pass the discriminatory process of being selected for a VISA that becomes more complex every day, causing more immigrants to become illegal Aliens. For once the poor that attempt to get a VISA must proof to be rich because they require to have lots of money and property. After, arriving to the United States as an Illegal Alien if they were lucky to survive the 8 or as much as 20 hours walking across the dry desert, they then have to face starting from less than a fetus because a fetus has loving parents that will provide a shelter, protection, and food. On the other hand, immigrants do not have shelter, protection, food, job, language, sometimes they do not have anyone to ask for support. These complex situations destroy their mental well-being because they are afraid 24/7 of the government that attempts to protect the “weak and vulnerable” and instead harms the truly weak and vulnerable immigrants. The deportation segregate families of immigrants. Furthermore, if they attempt to fix their legal status they get punish 10 years and children pay the consequences. Again, the government’s attempt to protect the weak and vulnerable hurt the children of immigrants that get
One’s cultural identity consists of their race, gender, socioeconomic status, age, religion, and so on. Being aware of your own cultural identity is just as important as being aware of other’s. People’s cultural identity defines who they are, the privilege (or lack of privilege) they receive, and how society views them. It is important to understand that White individuals have more privileges than individuals of color. White individuals do not experience detriment and difficulties due specifically to their skin color and instead receive advantages. White privilege is defined as benefits that white individuals have that people of color do not (Kendall, 2012). The following walks through my personal cultural background, how it was shaped, defined, and developed, and limitations to my personal competencies.
Few people know their own political beliefs. Although this sounds strange I truly believe it, considering the varying political opinions that are constantly being thrown at us from the television, the news, the radio, magazines, our families, and even the president. So much influence makes it hard to maintain personal political views; your own opinion can easily be swayed. The media often presents information on current issues that may cause someone to stray from their original, authentic position. In order to reestablish a personal opinion, everything else must be set aside, and all outside influences disregarded. Having done this, and having taken several political quizzes, I was surprised to find myself, according to the political quizzes, considered a centrist- a moderate or middle grounder. Prior to exploring my own political views I considered myself a conservative. Having been influenced by the media and especially by my family I thought of myself as a true conservative in every way. Until recently, I never even bothered to have my own political views; what I heard from family members I accepted as true and learned what I could from the media. Although I still passionately support the Republican Party on many issues, I discovered that with all other influences set aside, I have more moderate, and surprisingly several liberal opinions than I ever would have acknowledged.
With the upcoming elections, personal politics are becoming a popular topic for conversation. I do not know what my earliest memory of politics was, I feel like I grew up with them my entire life. My parents encouraged understanding of political issues in order to pick a stance when it came to them. My parents have also supported my political views even the ones that do not match their own. I have been registered to the independent party for six years now, because I was never sure where I fell between the democrats and the republicans. After taking the online quiz, it was no surprise to find myself closer to the left wing on the political scale. I feel like this only makes sense with the professional career I chose. As a social worker, I want
Anthropology is known as the study of human beings, over time and space. We often look at anthropology as just the evolution of mankind and their basic development. After taking a class in Cultural Anthropology, I’ve come to realize how much more in depth it is. There are many different aspects that we do not look at. We do not need to be anthropologists to see how these concepts can apply to our daily lives. Anthropology makes you to look at the world differently than you were taught too. Cultural anthropology, has a holistic approach that helps us to see how one society relates to itself and how that society can be taken on its own terms without bias. It helps to identify our own way of viewing various different cultures around the world and realize that the way we do things and see things may not be the only right way there is. There are other people around the world that are different from us and do things differently that we are used to or that we find to be “the right way”.
Ethnoscapes abound in today’s society. The concept of ethnoscapes can be represented by ethnic presence, difference and change. These aspects are present in today’s urban areas. This essay will evaluate the concept of ethnoscapes based on ethnic presence, difference and change in urban areas. It will then go on to analyse the meaning of the ‘on the ground’ theory and how ethnoscapes relate to other conceptual approaches such as segregation, multicultural city and ethnic economies. The final part of the essay will link together ethnic presence, difference and change with segregation, multicultural city and ethnic economies by using examples from tutorial 5 based on the knowledge of grounded theory.
