Dyeing Hair is Powerful My desire to control every aspect of my earthly life has always been a part of who I am. Steve Maraboli, a highly sought after motivational speaker says “The reason many people in our society are miserable, sick, and highly stressed is because of an unhealthy attachment to things they have no control over”, for a while I myself tried to control the uncontrollable; I have since learned. There have been times in my life when I lost control and wasn't attached to anything, my future was at the control of everyone and everything. That is a dangerous place to be. Dyeing my hair was something that I could always control, to no avail, something to attach to. The addiction for me began after an unfortunate hair bleaching accident, long story short I got prescription face cream touch my hair and woke up to it being orange everywhere. It has since become a part of my life for 2 years now. Starting off with a color correction to fix my orangey-mess. …show more content…
I’ve had brazilian hot oil treatments that promise to repair every hair cuticle on my head, I’ve had a breakthrough swedish product; olaplex, shipped to my house to rebind my hair proteins. That in itself is powerful, being in the sole position to take something broken, withering away and through time making it strong and luscious. However it’s also powerful how these products promise to fix everything in one box, in 35 minutes or less, for only $19.99. In reality the only word that can describe this act is a temporary band aid. The only thing these products do is make one’s hair appear healthy, until seven days later when one’s hair returns to its broken, dry heap of over processed hay. Similarly we can lie to ourselves and make it seem like we have the essence of control, and we might even be able to maintain that for a little bit, until it all comes crashing

In the world there are two distinct types of things. There are things that exist external to us, such as one's reputation or a relationship. We do not have direct control over these things since they exist outside of us. Then there are internal things that we do have control over, like out desires, or things we dislike. The internal things can be controlled, while the external can be harder to control. Some philosophers even believe that the external things cannot be controlled, and attempting to control them will just bring unhappiness.
inundated with this idea of what “good hair” is, to the point that it seemed natural to force that same ideal upon me.
control can be up to us. However, something that is up to us must be
Some existing Literature on Natural Hair The existing literature on ethnic and racial studies among African-Americans has focused on issues pertaining to beauty and body politics especially on natural hair. Spellers and Moffitt assert that the body politics that one assumes, guides how one relates to a particular political ideology in a particular society. Black natural hair is considered as a way by which the true identity of African women can be understood (Jacobs-Huey). It is a symbol of power among black women; it influences how people are treated by others.

At a young age, I already internalized so much self-hatred because of the color of my skin and hair. I struggle with this immensely since I’d watch Disney movies, that only popularize one racial demographic, and the only person that I could semi look up to was Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. But there was no real representation of minorities when I was growing up, so I strived like any other person would to be a Disney princess. I always asked my mom to put weave in my hair or do something with it, so I could have long flown hair like Princess Ariel, from The Little Mermaid movie, or strive to look as beautiful as Princess Aurora when she was sleeping. And I continued to struggle with these ideas that what is beautiful was to be white. And I just couldn 't comprehend at the time, that I was already beautiful just the way I am. It wasn’t until I got to high school, where I somewhat shed these ideas on what was beautiful. I just realized that the media and the movies are essentially fake and photoshopped. And the models for the tv and magazines were too boney and hungry. I got used to my curves and by the body by that time. But I didn’t really show forth pride for my melanin nor color. I just accepted the fact that I was black and born that way. I didn’t realize how rich and important my color is as well as my culture. It was until I started school, here in the University of Boston,
There have been musicals, documentaries, researches, panel discussions and even talk shows about hair, hair qualities and hairstyles, even Oprah Gail Winfrey chose hair for the magazine's September 2013 theme. According to Adlman (2013), Oprah Winfrey in a video interview said,
Hair dyeing became popular in the 1950’s, at that time, about 7% of American women chemically colored their hair. Today, about 75% of American women chemically change the color of their locks. Every day, new techniques and styles are added to the world of hair. Hair Colorists spend their time helping their clients change their look and add some fresh pigment to their clients’ faded strands. Although professional hair coloring has its challenges, hair colorists have a wide variety of creative outlets, have close personal connections with their clients and help them to build self-confidence and aid them in expressing their individuality.
If loss of control, consider that it is rooted in distrust of other people and that we would rather die than rely on those around us.
Color can be a semiotic resource. It has many uses in the cultural association of signs. Some features that contribute as a signifier are saturation, purity, modulation, value and hue. Red can signify danger, green can stand for hope. In most countries black is a sign of mourning. However, in some parts of Europe, brides wear black for their wedding. In China and some other Eastern Asian countries, white is considered the color for mourning. While in America and most of Europe, white is a sign of purity and warn by brides. These contrasts of cultural semiotics make color partly unpredictable. In order for the color to function as a sign, there must be a consensus of meaning. In most cases there is not a consensus that is shared by all societies. There are some regularities and this is what makes color function as a semiotic resource. The challenge is understanding the motivations and interests of different groups. Some colors translate well and some do not. Finding these regularities within groups and applying them as semiotic resources is a challenge (Kress, 2002). Some associations to color are universal and these connections could spread as communication becomes more global (Eiseman, 2000).
What do you call a blonde who dies their hair brown? Artificial Intelligence. From stereotypical jokes like these, to being called a ditz or an airhead blondes are being discriminated against by everyone around the world. Blondes are awesome, but tend to be accused of having lower IQ’s and are often portrayed as dumb and brainless in movies such as Legally Blonde and Clueless. These stereotypes and false conclusions are untrue and offensive to the blonde haired community, but being blonde has many benefits including looking younger than you actually are, but also attracting more men than ANY OTHER hair color.
As people look around the different cities of our fair country, one might notice that many people nowadays are coloring their hair to cover grey or just for the fun of it. One difference among the younger generation and the older generation is the colors that are chosen for their hair. The younger generation of this day and age seem to prefer wild colors such as Infra Red, Mystic Heather, Deadly Nightshade, Tiger Lily, etc, as self-expression compared to the older generation choosing natural shades to cover the signs of aging. This can be seen in the rising number of young people that are seen around with these types of wild colors. Not all young people choose the wild colors over natural shades because some choose the natural shades as self-expression. Not sticking to the ways of their parents, teens are showing they can be more independent. Many of us do not want to grow up to be like our parents so coloring our hair is one way to be different. In the past our parents were usually prohibited to color their hair unless it was a natural shade suck as black or brown. Today, we are allowed to dye our hair colors such as Infra Red, AfterMidnight Blue, Pillarbox Red or even Electric Lizard Green.
