Personal Engagement Statement: Growing up, I have always loved the card game called Spit. Spit is a card game where you and your opponent split the deck in half and see who can get rid of all their cards first. You and your opponent both place a card in between you both and have to line up the cards you’ve placed down in front of you in number order until all of your cards are gone. Once one of the players finishes all of their cards which they set up infant of them, the opponents race each other to slap the shortest pile. It’s all about how quick your hands are. The most important part of the game is not your skill, but your reflexes. Exploration According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary online, reflexes are instantaneous movements that move in response to a stimulus. A reflex that is observed in babies shown on babycenter.com is the grasp reflex. It is also known as a primitive reflex since we know how to do it naturally without being taught to do so. The grasp reflex is when something is put near an infant’s hand and the infant’s first reaction is to hold onto it, like a finger or toy. Reflexes that we are more used to as we …show more content…
The website I used is made specifically for measuring reaction time. It is a game where you have 5 tries to stop a sheep from running away. The only thing you have to do is click the button as fast as you can when you see the sheep begin to run away. It measures how quickly you click the button each time and give you your average speed. On separate occasions, I had the boys individually play the game and record their average time. I would then ask them to do 10 burpees (a type of exercise where 1 burpee is a squat, jump, push-up, and another jump), play the game again, and then record their average
One topic that is a big part in the experiment, testing how reaction time is affected by the influence of peppermint candy, is reaction time. Reaction time can be defined as the amount of time an organism takes to respond to stimulus, or a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue. For example, the International Encyclopedia of The Social Sciences explained reaction time
set amount of time can be used to measure the rate of reaction. A fast
Children at this age begin to explore the world around through their reflexes, such as sucking and grasping.
Esther Thelen’s article “The Improvising Infant: Learning to Move” describes her research into how and why infants use repeated motor sequences. She found these movements are related to the onset of new behaviors. Once an infant has achieved full mastery of the skill, the oscillating movements stopped. Infants do these actions when they are excited or drowsy, and even though the movements are involuntary, the infants can take over the movement for an intentional act, such as demonstrating impatience or getting attention. These movements and what caused them fascinated Thelen, and she began to study them. One particular experiment she ran focused on a disappearing reflex.
Communication is a vital component of everyday relationships in all of mankind. In plays, there are many usual staging and dialogue techniques that directors use to achieve the attention of the audience. However, in the play, “Post-its (Notes on a Marriage)”, the authors Paul Dooley and Winnie Holzman use both staging and conversation in order to convey the struggles of modern relationships. The play is unconventional in how it attempts to have the audience react in a unique way. The authors use staging and conversation to portray to the audience that there are complex problems with communication in modern relationships.
Some scholars think they are all “learned, like speech, without any special effort on the part of the learner or the teacher; consequently, their importance and influence are often overlooked” (DeVito, 1968). This does not account for all nonverbal behavior like the self-touch gesture. The self-touch gesture happens when someone is nervous or intimidated, and looking for some self-assurance. While trained speakers can be taught to not to do this, who taught anyone to start doing this in the first place? These unconscious behaviors, especially body movements and gestures are what make nonverbal and kinesics interesting and important to understand
In this sub-stage the baby is learning about their surrounding environment by using their reflexes, which includes sucking when given a bottle or breast and how they can interact with their surroundings.

The baby also shows a ‘grasp reflex’- if anything is put in the hand, it is automatically grasped tightly. This reflex disappears after a few weeks. At such a young age, the baby is only aware of vague shapes, darkness, light and movement. Newborns are very short sighted because their eyes have a fixed focus of about 20-25 cm.
(Presnell, 1999) This mean the infants are only aware of what is in front them and what happen in the close environment. Like they are growing, they are learning constantly by the trial and error, for example when the infants start to roll around their body and holding their head up, or start crawling and move in the space available for them. Later they start to standing up and walking holding their self from furniture and they feel a little freedom and challenge for that new adventure, walk. In addition to that, is also present the beginning of
Sensory – motor · Babies and young children learn through their senses, activity and interaction with their environment. · They understand the world in terms of actions. 2. Pre – operations · Young children learn through their experiences with real objects in their immediate environment. · They use symbols e.g. words and images to make sense of their world.
The types of games that children play change dramatically compared to early childhood. In addition to the activities that they already play, they start to strive for a challenge. Middle childhood is the time when children acquire skills such as reading and arithmetic. During this time children start to play games that are complicated and rule oriented. Because of these changes, children begin to play games based on strategy such as playing cards and other games that test their mind. They play games such as Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh. These card games require children to count, remember, and plan strategies. By playing these games, children begin to plan consciously, coordinate actions, evaluate their progress, and modify their plans and strategies based on reflection and evaluation.
Reflexes are automatic responses that children cannot control. They are innate and automatic. A few of the reflexes infants have are:
A reflex pathway, or a reflex arc, is a neural pathway that is involved in the activation of a reflex. Reflexes are reactions that respond to stimuli. They usually happen without the sensory neurons having to pass directly through the brain. Therefore, reflexes are called involuntary reactions since they happen without a command. This allows the reflex action to occur quickly because the electrical signal can be sent to the spinal cord immediately without needing to go through the brain. The brain receives sensory input as the action occurs, but not before. The human body has lots of reflex pathways. However, if a disruption occurs in these pathways, the person most likely has a certain kind of neurological disorder that will make the person
