Many people don't understand the effects on peppermint candy to the brain's reaction time. The experiment is telling if peppermint candy has an effect on reaction time. Reaction time can be affected by many things such as their normal reaction time, eating peppermints, a volunteers nervous system, a person's defects, or their genetics.
One topic that is a big part in the experiment, testing how reaction time is affected by the influence of peppermint candy, is reaction time. Reaction time can be defined as the amount of time an organism takes to respond to stimulus, or a thing or event that evokes a specific functional reaction in an organ or tissue. For example, the International Encyclopedia of The Social Sciences explained reaction time

as, “When a human subject follows instructions to make a specific response as soon as he can after the presentation of a specific signal, the latency of the response is called reaction time (RT)...” (para. 1, 1968) There are also many theories of how exactly reaction time works, one of them is the Descartes’ Theory. For instance, the International Encyclopedia of The Social Sciences explains how the Descartes’ Theory works in human reaction, there are vibrations sent through the body which give out energy turned into emotion and also causes the body to act. (para, 4, 1968) Some factors of reaction time are defects and also what hand is dominant. For example, the article on KidsHealth.org shares some information about a common birth defect that highly effects motor skills, “Since cerebral palsy affects muscle control and coordination, even simple movements, like standing still, are difficult.” (para.6, 2015) Genetics also play a huge role in reaction time. According to The Census at School Canada, females age 13 right handed volunteers had an average of 0.48 second when left handed 13 year olds had an average of 0.49 seconds. ( Canada, 2007) Reaction time is a huge part of the experiment testing how peppermints affect reaction time. Another topic in the experiment, testing if the influence of peppermint candy affects reaction time, is peppermint.
Peppermint can be defined as the aromatic leaves of a plant of the mint family, or an essential oil obtained from them, used as a flavoring in food. For instance, WebMD explains the common uses for peppermint in food, peppermints can be used as flavoring agents, and are a common holiday flavor used in many thing such as coffee drinks and cookies.(WebMD, 2009) Peppermints are still technically a chemically enhanced food. For example, Chi Phung explains what chemicals are used to make the hybrid mint, or a mint containing two or more chemicals, methanol creates the mints cooling effect and menthone makes the icy scent. (Chi Phung, 2013) Peppermint essential oils are often used for medical uses as well. According to WebMD, the oil can used for the side effects of the common cold, more specifically coughing, inflammation in the mouth or throat, sinus infections, and bacterial growth.(WebMD, 2009) Also, WebMD states that the oil can be used for digestive problems such as, heart burn, vomiting, cramps, a simple upset stomach, morning sickness, and more serious issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). 2009) The next important subject involved in the experiment testing how reaction time is affected by the influence of peppermints, is the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex body system that controls every function in the entire human body. According to KidsHealth.org, there are two main parts of the nervous system, the brain and the spinal column. Some main parts of the brain are the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem. The regions of the spinal column are the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and the coccygeal regions. (Dowshen, 2015) The nervous system works by sending signals to different parts of the body. For example KidsHealth.org, explains the signals, sensory neurons or signals take information from the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin and tell the brain, then the brain processes it and tells the body how to react. Also from KidsHealth.org, Dowshen explains how different parts of the brain take on certain jobs, for instance the cerebellum controls hand-eye coordination used in the experiment. (Dowshen, 2015) It is important to understand the nervous system while examining the experiment testing how peppermints affect reaction time. The final important topic within the experiment testing how reaction is affected by peppermint candy is the theory of how peppermint stimulates the brain.
The theory is that peppermint stimulates the brain in a calm way reducing stress and anxiety. For example Mortensen explains what the theory is, “Peppermint also increased their alertness while helping them maintain a sense of calm.” According to research by Mortensen, even just the scent of peppermint can lighten a stressful atmosphere.(Mortenson, 2015) The theory has been proven as true by the simple fact that the holiday candy stimulates brain activity. For instance Mortenson describes the effect of peppermints to the brain, the hybrid mint increases oxygen and blood pressure and then brings the blood and oxygen to the brain. This oxygen and blood are used and increases concentration and focus. (Mortenson, 2015) The mint used in the experiment has been proven to increase the brain's natural
abilities. In summary, peppermint candy has a huge effect on the reaction of a human being. The reaction of volunteers can be affected by their normal reaction time, the influence of peppermint, their nervous system, their genetics and any possible defects.

The purpose of this experiment was to identify which brand of mint gum holds its flavor the longest. The four brands I chose were Orbit, Trident, Ice Breakers, and Wrigley's Doublemint My hypothesis was that Trident brand would last the longest and Wrigley's Doublemint would last the shortest. I did not use any people in my test. I chewed the same amount of gum at a time and the gum was all the same flavor, mint. All the gum was bought at the same time from the same store. I chewed the four brands of gums between periods of time. When chewing, I timed myself with a stopwatch. When I believed the gum ran out of flavor, I stopped the timmer and recorded the time. My hypothesis was incorrect. Instead of Trident, Orbit lasted the longest. However
In fact, both peppermint and Big Red gum are said to increase a person’s alertness, motivation, and performance. They also lower fatigue, anxiety, and frustration. This helps the person focus better. Also, scents play an important part. The scent travels to the limbic system in your brain. This area affects your hormones and mood. Important parts of the limbic system are the hypothalamus, the amygdala, and hippocampus. The hypothalamus regulates hormones, the amygdala is responsible for emotion and the hippocampus is important for memory. All of these functions play a part while taking a test.
This experiment will show how the temperature of water will affect how quickly a Alka-Seltzer tablet will dissolve. (Rowland) This experiment seemed appealing to me because it sounded interesting to experiment with chemical reactions. “How does the temperature of water affect how quickly an Alka-Seltzer tablet will dissolve?”
The peppermint works because when the scent of the peppermint increases oxygen, and blood pressure. Blood brings oxygen to the brain, and if peppermint increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. It then will increase blood pressure, that means the more oxygen traveling to your brain. The more oxygen the brain recieves or is available tothe better you can concentrate and focus. Taste of peppermint can greatly improve memory and can work faster. Smell of peppermint slightly improves memory.
My experiment is testing one of the five senses of my dog, Blaze. I am testing for taste. In this experiment the question I am going to answer is, Which of three flavors of treats will my dog prefer? The treats are made by the same company, Beggin’ Strips from Nestlé Purina PetCare Division, but they are different flavors. The flavors used will be Hickory Smoked Bacon, Bacon & Cheese, and Bacon & Peanut Butter. My hypothesis for this experiment is, Of the three flavors my dog will prefer the Bacon & Cheese flavor the best. I chose this topic for my experiment because I have a major interest in animals and I am hoping to get a degree in some form of veterinarian services, such as zoology.
As a psychologist who is trying to follow up on any of the study in the articles above, I would pick the cookie monster and create two groups and randomly select participants to represent each group. I would label one group as experimental and the other group as control group. In the first group which is the experimental group, the participants will be given an analogy on how cookies boost happiness in an individual. In the process of conducting this experiment, each participant will be handed cookies whenever they are moody and depressed. However in the control group, the participants would be totally unaware of the supposed positive effect of cookie consumption, but will also be given cookies whenever they are sad. After doing this, I will sum up an evaluation on whether the intake of cookies can really improve an individual’s mood.
Level of caffeine to affect pulse rate while performing physical activities on 15-16 year olds.
Mint is a flowering herb, there are many different kinds of mint. Mint grows in cool and moist areas where there is shade. Many people enjoy the light, fresh
“Researchers at Ohio State University conducted what they say is the most scientifically rigorous test of physical changes caused by smelling the popular scents — and came up with nothing,” says JoNel Aleccia (2008). So this theory explains that the oils and the scents of the oils only make you feel good as opposed to actually getting well, that the fact that these oils actually work is all in the head.
Most kids rang the bell and ate the marshmallow within the first 30 seconds of the experiment. This statement shows that these kids have little to no self- control which is common for younger kids. The kids that did wait to eat the second marshmallow came up with different strategies to keep themselves entertained and their mind off of the marshmallow that was sitting in front of them (Source 1). Some of the mental strategies some of these kids had were to cover their eyes, stand in the corner of the room, pull on their pigtails, stroke the marshmallow, or even kicked at the desk.
The time taken for this to happen is the measure of the rate of reaction. We must do this several times, and change the concentration of sodium thiosulphate. The rate of reaction is a measure of the change, which happens during a reaction in a single unit of time. The things that affect the rate of reaction are as follows. Surface area of the reactants Concentration of the reactants
My Science Fair experiment is based on four main products, ibuprofen, acetic acid, bleach, and bread. The name of this is experiment is "Bread vs. Chemicals." The goal of this experiment is to see what chemical bread can survive in the longest. I will do multiple trials of each type of chemical and record results promptly. I am going to have three containers, one for each chemical and place a piece of bread in each and see how long the bread can survive without falling apart to determine the results. This experiment falls under the category of food science. Food science is considered to be a broad topic that coincides with scientific principles and foods to better understand them. Maillard reaction is quite often referred to as the
... many of them are put in salads and meats to give it a spicy or sweet taste. Some of the spices would be Allispice, Anise, Cardamom, and more. Allispice kind of looks like cinnamon when you crunch it up, but its not. What it really is a brown spicy spice that delights your mouth and gives a lot of tastes to your meat. Anise is found in these very nice plants that look like a star. Their color is brown and they are sweet spices that many people like. Cardamom is green and this spice is made using and mortar and pestle and this spice is in many salads they are very sweet and salty if you would say.
Overall my aim from the experiment conducted was achieved as; the factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction were discovered. My hypotheses were proven as; a catalyst increases the speed of a reaction, larger surface area have a faster reaction rate, additional stirs make the reaction occur faster, the higher concentration levels quicken the rate of a reaction and temperature speeds up the reaction time. The investigation was a fair test as all variables were controlled as my results support this. Although the practical activity could be improved if it was to be repeated. Altogether it was a fantastic learning experience that I am grateful for participating in.
