My religious faith and my upbringing have instilled in me the belief that high moral values such as integrity, honesty, fairness, and compassion define the personal character of an individual. These values are important to me because, my personal code of conduct, derived from these moral values, allow me to make correct choices and act ethically, both in my personal and professional lives. I consciously make every effort to lead my life adhering to these principles. These values help me lead a guilt-free and happy life irrespective of the many hardships and failures I have encountered along the way. I was the second hire (but, first engineer) into a new division formed to explore business opportunities in the industrial automation market. This—my first job— provided me with a wonderful learning opportunity, allowing me to hone my computer applications skills very early in my career. In ten years, the division grew to be a seventeen member team. I was given ample opportunities to demonstrate technical excellence and quickly rose through the company’s ranks. I became a team leader, and eventually, the manager of this division. Just around this time, I got an opportunity to take up an employment with a US based firm. After ruminating over several weeks, I finally decided to take up this opportunity and migrate to the US about four months later. Just when I was about to declare my intention to leave the firm, I learnt that the company, having performed extremely well, was just about to announce the first bonus ever to its employees. I, being the senior most and key employee of this startup division, stood to gain significantly a large amount of money as bonus. However, I also knew that if I disclosed my intention to leave the company at that time, I would automatically become ineligible for the bonus, which was to be declared a couple of months later. We frequently have our customers visiting with us for project discussions and review meetings. It is customary for us to take our clients for dinners during their stay with us. The company has strict rules on how much one can spend on food and alcoholic beverages. The company has zero tolerance policy for any infractions, especially with business expense reporting, and using company the credit card at night clubs or casinos. On this occasion, I had asked one of my direct reports, John (not his real name), to host a visitor from overseas for dinners over a weekend. At the end of the month, when he submitted his expense report for approval, I was shocked to see that he had spent excessively for dinners, and for alcoholic beverages at local nightclubs during the weekend. This was a total violation of the company policy. Just then I realized that I could have indirectly been a reason for this major infraction on John’s part. I had observed, on a few occasions earlier in the year, that John had exceeded his limits relating to food and other incidental expenses during his business travels. However, I had ignored to intervene and correct these infractions due to two reasons: first, any intervention would require a written report to HR, and second, John was a key member of my team, and I was instrumental in selecting and hiring him, and I felt questioning him or penalizing him for these infractions would be tantamount
