According to the theory of Existentialism, individuals religiously seek out direction, values, and beliefs from people they consider eminent in their life. Thus in this process, we become more of what people want us to be rather than who we truly are. The fourth domain is the search for meaning in life. The search for meaning in life is a crucial aspect of this particular theory, because the meaning of life is created through an individual's values, which results in an individual creating a unique rewarding life. Person- centered and Existentialism both highlight the importance of the relationship between client and counselor, which through that process the client will have the opportunity to self heal. The aspects that appeal to me in Person -centered are the client and counselor relationship, because in all relationships trust must be built to further the process of getting to know another individual. The aspect of existentialism that appeals to me is the work around death for we all must face it someday, and developing an appropriate meaning to life. However, the main aspect of both theories that appeal to me are that they merely focus on the future and give no attention to the past for the past is forever gone. The theories will give me the opportunity to be completely empathic, congruent, and allow the technique of motivational interviewing to steer the client in the direction. I will use the techniques of open ended questions and ultimately supporting the client and responding to their resistances throughout the session which can effect change in his or her problem. The article explained that it is a fascinating theory that works with a variety of individuals. However, many therapists are now utilizing it with a pluralistic approach. The domains of Person -centered are appropriate when dealing with diverse populations because it encompasses respect values and congruence. Each individual is uniquely different as well as their specific need. Clients are also aware of what they want in a client counselor relationship. It would be wise of a counselor to suggest certain questions about their time together. What is the client's goal and how can the counselor help achieve this goal? As mentioned in the article, some individuals may have a difficult time showing empathy or talking about their feelings. The counselor may consider creating a form that allows the client the opportunity to indicate what type of therapist they would like to work with. According to the article, “Questions on the document may include have a counselor focus on thoughts and cognitions opened to feelings or the client would suggest more silence in the counseling session.” (Cooper 2011 pg. 219) I agree and understand that Client centered is broad and I do believe this can help the theory with direction in what the client will truly benefit from.
