We understand that back in time many people had visions given to them by God. The bible talks about many prophets who had dreams given to them by God. There has also been many false prophets who have told people false visions that were given to them by God. In this essay I will focus on my understanding of the Bible truth about dreams and visions and the contents of the vision portrayed in, “The Passion of the Holy Martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas”, The story of perpetua and felicitas or the dreams told by perpetua are very interesting to read and very motivational to inhencing our faith in God. Perpectua had five different visions that she wrote about and those visions were not just normal visions, but scary visions which are quiete fritening just by reading them. What perpetua and felicity went through was very hard, infact I would say that if I went through what they did, I would have given up without hesitation. Perpetua and felicitas went through hardship, physical abuse and mental abuse too, but the two females kept their faith strong and kept believing in God to help them survive the harships they were going through. …show more content…
Perpectua were able to stay faithful through the hardship because for so long because of her dreams.
Perpetua’s dreams were a great motivation to him because those dreams contained messages which may have been direct or indirect in the sense that people from the past would have been able to translate her dreams and learn from them or her dreams would have been confusing back then but through time, people have been able to get something inspiring from her dreams. In fact the thing is, dreams straight from God are a good way for us a humans to stay faithful because you know that God is with you so since Perpetua kept having dreams, it meant that she knew that God was with her and she knew she had to stay strong even if in the end of everything her life would also come to an
end. I must say that they events that happened in “The Passion of the Holy Martyrs Perpetua and Felicitas” are extremely strange, they somehow seem to bee super natural and unbelievable because most of the things that happened in perpetua’s dreams and the things that happened to her and the people around her were too harsh, Perpetua had a child that I believe was not older than one month. I also think that God must have been doing amazing dreams even beyond human imagination in order to have Perpetua stay strong as a believer.
Brewster’s visions continued, leading to his belief that his mission was to transcribe the “lost books” of Esdras, an ancient Israelite prophet. These visions were instigated by an angel, who decided that the best way for the Lord’s word to be transcribed would be through a boy about the age...
During this time, Felicitas gave birth to a baby girl, who was taken away from her hours after her birth. The day before they were to be martyred, Perpetua had a dream of her battling a “savage Egyptian”, and proclaimed that she would battle the devil himself. The day of their execution, the soon-to-be martyrs are led into the amphitheater where they are to be killed by beast. They are first scourged by Gladiators, and then a boar, a bear, and a leopard are set on the men, a wild cow on the women. After the two were wounded by the animals, Perpetua and Felicitas gave each other the kiss of peace before they are put to the sword. Both are beheaded, and both became martyrs for their faith.
For the author, the fact that Perpetua is a woman strengthens her sacrifice for her faith. This is due to the societal norms and customs she disobeys and overcomes to become a martyr. In ancient Rome, they lived in a patriarchal society. This will make her disobedience of her father more noteworthy as it violates the cultural custom. In her writing, Perpetua talks of her father coming to her in the prison. She says “He came up to me to cast down my faith saying: Have pity, daughter, on my grey hairs; have pity on your father, if I am worthy to be called father by you” (The Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas 5). Multiple times, her father comes to her in prison, begging that she say she is not a Christian so she may live. Through this interaction with her father, we can see his fatherly love as he tries to prevent her death. We also see a sort of disgrace that comes from a daughter’s disobedience, she writes that her father says “give me not over to the reproach of men” (The Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas 5). This show of direct disobedience of her father portrays Perpetua as a stronger martyr. She is not only giving her life for her faith, but going against society and customs, saying her beliefs are more important than both. This is a strong example to encourage conversion to Christianity. When Perpetua is in prison, her father tells her to “look upon your son, who will not endure to live after you” (The Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas 5). This leads to another point concerning Perpetua as a woman. If she dies for her faith, she will abandon her child and give up being a mother. In ancient times, much of a women’s identity was in her ability to be a good mother. With her martyrdom, Perpetua will choose faith over this key part of her life and legacy. This, yet again, shows why, by being a woman, Perpetua is a strong example in the author’s purpose to convert
As an avenue to predict the future and gain insight into his mind, Antonio’s dreams provide more depth to his character. His dreams reveal his dilemma with priesthood, the sinful ways of his brothers, his struggles in coping with death. His dreams reveal the real Antonio, usually hidden behind the expectations of tomorrow. As Paracelsus wisely puts it, “That which the dream shows is the shadow of such wisdom as exists in man, even if during his waking state he may know nothing about it...We do not know it because we…are asleep in regard to that which is real within ourself.”
There is a theory that dream and myth are related which is conveyed through the writing of Douglas Angus’ Kafka's Metamorphosis and "The Beauty and the Beast" Tale and supported by Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis. The stories are very symbolic when conveying the metamorphosis of a human being. Unlike Beauty and the Beast, in the Metamorphosis some suggest love is received through acts of cruelty yet in actuality it appears that cruelty results in heartache. Due to being a beast, the repulsiveness requires genuine love which can achieve the “magical transformation.” This “magical transformation” is not achieved and creates a twist in the plot derived from the concepts in the “Beauty and the Beast.”
Bartolome de Las Casas was an important protector of native peoples because the latter part of his life was dedicated to social reforms that called for better treatment of the natives.
The Dream of the Rood is a poem that illustrates the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ from the perspective of the cross. The illustration comes together in a dream. The rood or the cross communicates with the Dreamer, to give him hope in the future return of Christ and eternal glory. Additionally, the rood encourages the Dreamer to share his dream with others and point them to the cross. This poem is meaningful to me because it prompted me to reflect on the cross and what it represents. It is a symbol of God’s love and what He did on the cross, so we could be saved from our sins.
The image of Jesus nailed to a wooden cross by the palms of his hands and with a crown of thorns wrapped around his head is one that has transcended all time barriers. It has inclusive been replicated into figure form that is utilized in various ways but whose primary function is to serve as a constant reminder of the physical suffering endured by Jesus. In The Dream of the Rood however, the perception of Jesus Christ as not only the son of God and savior of mankind but also as a human with the capacity to feel pain, is subverted when through the perspective of a personified cross he is conveyed as a warrior in the midst of combat. The portrayal of Jesus in this way immediately evokes the image of an ideal stereotypical hero who is strong, courageous, and unrelenting in appearance. Nevertheless, it can be said that this type of hero is more inclined towards fantasy than it is based on reality because these idealized heroic figures have only ever truly existed in a fictional universe. The depiction of Jesus as a warrior thus, undermines forms of heroism that stem from explicit suffering that is not concealed but rather expressed by the individual.
Greeks and Romans claimed that dreams were signs from their gods and had prophetic magic
“Four days will quickly steep themselves in night; Four nights will quickly dream away the time.” (Lines 7&8), Hippolyta talks about dream in those lines, but dreams were talked about in many upcoming lines by others people in the play. People dream a lot in this play some dreamed to marry the one the truly love; some wish to make the one the loved fall in love with them. Also, the fact that fairies are mentioned in this play, give to this play a funny and creepy side. In addition, people had also true dreams in the play because people were sleeping and waking up and were saying they had a dream. Moreover, dreams are not real because they are just dreams; dream about something does not make it true or a reality. Although, most dreams have real life meaning not all dreams mean something. For example, if a person watches a horror movie before going to bed and have a nightmare, it’s probably because of the movie and the dream has absolutely no meaning. However, when I dream, I always to try to understand the meaning of the dream because as a Christian, I believe that God talks to us sometimes through dreams. On the contrary, if I did something previously that could have made me have a nightmare, I don’t care about the dream because I eventually knew the source of the dream. Also, a person can keep on having a
Since ancient times, dreams and their interpretations have been recognized as powerful and important. Dreams were considered to be a gift from a higher power and a connection from earth to the heavens and other spiritual worlds (Guiley). In the Old Testament, King Pharaoh’s dreams are interpreted multiple times by Joseph and clay tablets dating back to 3000 B.C., in the Roman and Greek era’s depict dreams or visions being sent from God, the dead, or other spiritual beings (Guiley). As time and science progressed dreams became less important until research began to show something interesting happening while the min...
Drenched in sweat and jolted to an upright position, a dream has awaken someone in the dead of night. Everyone dreams, whether they remember what they dreamt of or not. A dream is a series of images, thoughts, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep. Daydreaming is another state in which the mind is elsewhere. The only difference is that daydreaming occurs while awake and dreaming happens during a deep sleep. Surprisingly, dreams were first recorded clear back to the ancient days. From the Romans, to the Greeks, and all the way back to the Egyptians, dreams fascinated many. “They believed that dreams were caused by real things unable to be interpreted or controlled by the conscious mind” (“Dreams in Ancient Culture”). The ancients believed that dreams had a purpose behind them and were a message sent from god.. Behind every dream there is a meaning; philosophers study to find the reasonings as to why humans dream.
Freud also discusses the beliefs of early man, as dreams were connected to demons, gods and mythical deities. Dreams were perceived to be of a supernatural nature in primitive times and dreams were believed to portend the future.
...dreams – not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion.”
