Drug Use in Sports Many wonder how drugs can influence an athlete's performance in sports. Over the past few years, it has become more known and more common for athletes to use drugs to enhance their performance abilities. It has been becoming more common for athletes to overdose on drugs whether it being intentional or accidental. Many athletes who use performance enhancing drugs do not know the consequences or the damage the drugs can do to their body. Most athletes that use performance enhancing drugs are high school students. They believe that because their favorite professional athletes is using the enhancers that they are able to also. Athletes should be drug tested before every game to help reduce the use of drugs. Len Bias, a departed …show more content…
basketball player, did not know the effects of cocaine. It was his first time taking the drug. The cocaine caused Bias to have multiple seizures and go into cardiac arrest. When his body was autopsied they found six point five milligrams of cocaine in his system. Nobody knows what made him want to take the drugs, but many believe he did it to get rid of the pain he was having in his body from playing basketball. Taking a drug, such as cocaine, is common with athletes. They work out, get beat up on the court/field, and are in pain all the time. Taking drugs is just their easy way of getting rid of all the pain. Pain can be taken away in different, safer ways. Some athletes just choose the one that works faster and better for an easy escape. More and more the news has stories about professional athletes being found dead or almost dead in their home from overdosing. Athletes have accidentally and sometimes intentionally taken too much of a drug and do not react well to it. But who would? Many people think that a bad reaction can only happen to certain who have a physical disability. But that is not true. Anyone can have a heart attack, seizure, or liver failure from using drugs. It is easy to overdose on drugs one has even taken before and know how they react to them. Many people believe that if they have taken the drug before, it is impossible to overdose on that drug. This is also not true. It does not matter how many times an individual has taken a drug, they are not immune to the drug’s symptoms and they will harm the individual. Performance Enhancing Drugs can cause major, permanent damage to an individual’s body. An athlete that uses anabolic steroids may experience baldness, infertility, increase of body hair, severe acne, hear problem, drug dependence, liver failure, and tumors. Human growth hormone(HGH) is supposed to be used to treat anemia for people with kidney disease. HGH increases the amount of red blood cells making more oxygen move into the muscles. HGH can cause joint pain, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and in some cases diabetes. Creatine is the most common performance enhancing drugs that athletes use because it is not considered to be illegal. Athletes who take creatine usually take it with an illegal performance enhancing drug. Creatine is used to improve endurance and reduce fatigue while doing physical activity. It can cause stomach cramp, nausea and muscle cramps. If used in high doses it can cause kidney and liver failure. Most athletes take the creatine because it can help them gain weight. High school athletes that are trying to make it to the next level are using creatine to get bigger faster.
Stimulants are another common type of enhancing drug. Stimulants can improve endurance, reduce fatigue and increase alertness. Stimulants put everyone at a greater risks of have a heat stroke, become dehydrated, and not be able to sleep at night. An individual taking stimulants are putting themselves at risk for a heart attack, stroke, hallucinations, and extreme weight loss. These are only a small fraction of the amount of performance enhancing drugs there with only a few of their risks. Is putting your life at risk worth it for a few years of fame? Professional athletes using performance enhancing drugs, are influencing adolescent athletes to do the same. Studies done by psychologist in the past have shown that twenty percent of high school athletes who use performance enhancing drugs, do so because their favorite player does. Young athletes are starting to believe that to be the best, they have to use the best. They believe that if they use the same enhancers as professional athletes than they will be able to make it to the next …show more content…
level. Performance enhancers are becoming more and more common at the high school age. When a group of psychologist did a survey at a school, almost everyone in the school knew someone who uses or used some type of performance enhancing drugs. Young athletes are at a greater risk of health problems. They are not fully developed yet so they have a greater risk of having heart and liver problems. A high school athlete using a performance enhancer may experience severe acne, emotional swings and aggressive behavior. Women who use the enhancers may experience an increase in body hair and a deeper voice. Men taking the enhancers may experience baldness. Is losing your good looks worth the five seconds of fame? Athletes should be drug tested before every game/match.
If athletes were to be tested before every game, the use of performance enhancing drugs would be reduced drastically. This would cause younger athletes to stop using the drugs as often, make the games/matches more fair and equal, and it would cause the athletes to be healthier. Athletes ruin their lives and give themselves a bad reputation when they take performance enhancing drugs. When a professional athlete is caught using performance enhancers, they do not go undisciplined. For the first infraction, the player is suspended for the first game, for the second infraction, the player is suspended for one hundred games and for the third infraction, the player is banned from playing a professional sport for their lifetime. Is losing your professional career really worth it when you take the performance enhancing
drugs? Paul Byrd, a former Cleveland Indians baseball player, was accused of taking Human Growth Hormone(HGH) from 2002 to 2005. Byrd bought nearly twenty five thousand dollars worth of HGH. He told the press that he never took HGH without a doctor being present, but when found out that he bought the twenty five thousand dollars worth of HGH along with syringes, suspicions arises. Byrd was won many games in his playing time, beating the New York Yankees and the Metts. A two thousand dollars shipment was sent to Byrd’s hotel room on July 22, 2004. At the time Byrd was taking HGH it was not officially banned from the MLB so nothing could have been done. Except on January 13, 2005, the drug was banned. One week before the drug was banned, Byrd made his last purchase of the drugs. After further research, the researchers discovered that the the prescription drugs were not prescribed by a physician, they were prescribed by a dentist in Florida. The dentist's license was actually suspended in 2003 due to fraud and incompetence. Byrd never admitted to taking HGH and he never denied they use either, but he did deny the use of steroids, which he was never accused of using. “Human growth hormone is a powerful medicine used to treat dwarfism in children and AIDS wasting disease. It is illegal to use the drug without a valid prescription and a doctor's supervision. It also is illegal for doctors to prescribe growth hormone for uses not specifically approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.” HGH is very much like steroids. It causes an individual to grow muscle mass at a faster rate without all the pain. Many athletes choose to take HGH is because it cannot be detected in a urine test. It can only be found using a blood test, which is only used at the Olympic level. HGH is the “go to” drug for professional athletes because it cannot be found in tests so the only way anyone could find out is if the checked payment records.
Performance enhancing drugs affect so many people that don’t even realize it. Fans of the game, coaches, university leaders and of course athletes are the major groups of people that can be affected the most from the usage of performance enhancing drugs. Numerous studies have stated that an athletes drug use in sport could be credited to a complex interaction of personal and environmental factors (Judge). Athletes hold themselves to high standards for themselves or maybe even family members they must provide for. Athlete will do whatever it takes to strive in their sport because in most cases personal success can lead to better opportunities such as the National Football League or maybe even the National Basketball Association. Overall, individuals can be affected in a positive manner through the use of performance enhancing drugs. Furthermore, the use of performance enhancing can do nothing but help athletes. Also, some college athletes need performance enhancing drugs more than others. Not every athlete comes from a well provided family and knowing that can plaque athletes to where they’ll do whatever it takes to be successful. With this in mind it would totally be unfair if only one or a couple of athlete used enhancing drugs however if every athlete were granted the right to use performance enhancing drugs there
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of an edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced. Shortly thereafter, the rest of the sports world did not allow anabolic steroids as well. With the use of steroids no longer permitted athletes began to look for other alternatives. On the rise is two substances called creatine and androstenedione, both of which are sold over the counter. These two performance enhancers have only had minimal testing done on them, excluding the long-term effects, simply because they haven't been around long enough. Creatine and androstenedione have been said to produce results like steroids without the side effects. The truth is they do produce side effects and irregular muscle growth. By banning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just like steroids, sports competition will have a much healthier and fairer environment to participate in.
...mful effects, these effects can end somone’s life. These drugs are really bad, and hope that people do not use them. Therefore do not ever use performance-enhancing drugs.
Often the decision to use is made without considering the risk. Athletes who make the decision to use performance-enhancing drugs do not focus on the side effects. They do not realize that gaining weight quickly and unnaturally is not healthy. They are risking having mood swings, aggressive behavior, or even life t...

The saying “It’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game”, meaning people should respect the game. Sports are about competition on equal footing, with respect for the opponent, and with respect for the rules of the game. However, at the same time I agree that steroids have definitely made baseball more exciting because of the increase of home runs, but it is not all about entertainment; it is about having respect for the game itself and for the dedicated fans. I argue that athletes should not be doping in competitive sports because steroids is no less than cheating. Steroids give athletes an advantage over others by making them faster, stronger and feel
the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sports has been at the center of an international ethical debate for many years. Some professional athletes use steroids and other drugs to gain a competitive advantage in their sport. Such an advantage is generally considered by most athletic organizations to be cheating. In an effort to minimize the use of illegal supplements and other substances, drug tests are conducted frequently by most professional sports organizations.
Performance-enhancing drugs are commonly used amongst athletes who compete in sports. These substances enhance the performance of the user, which makes them to be stronger, faster and allows them recover from training quicker than an average person. These drugs are illegal in competitive sports and are considered cheating by many people. There have been number incidents in the past and recently where athletes have been caught using these prohibited substances and has suffered consequences. This report is a collation of all the information gathered from websites, journals, news articles, documentaries, movies, interviews and surveys, which discuss the risks involved when taking these drugs, and the reason why athletes take these drugs, whether they take it for the sole purpose of winning, wealth or fame.
The use of Performance Enhancing Drugs has been a big controversy in the world of sports. There has been debates on whether these drugs should be allowed into sports and be legalized. Over time there have been tons of athletes that have used Performance Enhancing Drugs and has been common nowadays. That is why many people believe that they should be allowed and they have strong arguments. If Performance Enhancing Drugs were to be allowed then it is said that athletes will become better and the game will be destroyed but that is not the case because not all of these drugs increase the ability of the user. That is because everyone’s body reacts to the drug differently. If these drugs were to be allowed it would make the sports more interesting
PED use is becoming a huge issue in sports as more people are doping every year and ruining sports for the rest of the world.Performance-enhancing drugs may boost performance, but it comes at a cost, not only to athletes, but to friends, family, those who look up in need of a role model, and for the future of all
Sports play an important role in society because they promote the health of individual bodies through hard work and dedication, embodied and encompassed by fair play and sportsmanship(Llewelyn). In the sports world today, performance-enhancing drugs (PED's) are very prevalent and have changed the way that almost everyone perceives sports figures. A substance is categorized as a PED when it has the potential to enhance a sport performance and when it poses a potential health risk to the competitor (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency). Since the dawn of Performance-Enhancing Drugs in the world of sports, the game has been forever changed by those who use them because of their potential
“Steroids can seem necessary to compete at the highest levels, and the quick rewards can outweigh the long term consequences to the user’s health” (Berman). Performance enhancing drugs are substances that are used to improve any form of activity performance in humans. There are several types of performance enhancing drugs out there. The types of performance enhancing drugs include anabolic steroids, androstenedione, human growth hormone, erythropoietin, diuretics, creatine and stimulants. The most common substance that athletes use is creatine. Even though people think that performance enhancing drugs has a negative impact on athletes,it can have a positive impact on athletes, though it increasingly strength, improving endurance, and
Performance Enhancing Drugs or PED’s have been around in sports for a few millenniums. PED’s are substances that help you perform to the best of your abilities in sports. These substances are always under scrutiny because of how they affect the human body and how they affect sports. PED’s have also been linked to deaths in some sports. In the past twenty years leagues and organizations have begun testing athletes for the use of PED’s. Considering that professional sports in America play a major part in society, it is important to know about PED’s and how they have impacted society today.
Professional athletes found to be using performance-enhancing drugs should be banned from their sports and should be informed on how it not only affects them but also their teammates. “Although performance enhancing is an old-age practice, the use of steroids and other drugs during competition is a violation of good sportsmanship. Steroid use provides an unfair advantage to athletes and establishes unrealistic achievement levels, which is why athletes who have used steroids should be punished rather than honored” (Issitt). Performance enhancing is unfair to other players because if an athlete is good and for instance is wanting to recruited by scouts, the one player who is using drugs to perform better could take the spotlight off of him when
“With so many grave risks, are the perceived benefits worth it?’ Today there are performance enhancing drugs being used in every sport, professional or not. The method to find proof is continuing to get harder and harder even when testing has increased.
