Performance Enhancing Drugs and Their Impact on the Overall World of Sports
Sports play an important role in society because they promote the health of individual bodies through hard work and dedication, embodied and encompassed by fair play and sportsmanship(Llewelyn). In the sports world today, performance-enhancing drugs (PED's) are very prevalent and have changed the way that almost everyone perceives sports figures. A substance is categorized as a PED when it has the potential to enhance a sport performance and when it poses a potential health risk to the competitor (U.S. Anti-Doping Agency). Since the dawn of Performance-Enhancing Drugs in the world of sports, the game has been forever changed by those who use them because of their potential

for unsportsmanlike advantages and the risks involved with using them. PED's serve two distinct purposes; to gain an edge or advantage over another, or to try to keep up with others ("Ethics and values").
There are four types of PED's: Anabolic Steroids, Erythropoietin, Masking Agents, and Stimulants. Anabolic Steroids are the most common of these. They, along with other stimulants such as Human Growth Hormone(HGH), have shown the potential to improve performance by increasing muscle mass and the ability to reduce body fat ("Thank You"). The Mayo Clinic has been quoted on saying that testosterone is "the main anabolic steroid hormone produced by the body". Testosterone was first experimented and discovered in the late 1800's. It served the purposes of adding muscle mass and is responsible for masculine characteristics such as a deeper voice (Mayo Clinic: Llewelyn, William). In order for testosterone to increase muscle size, the body must find a way to increase the intake to over 1,000%, which only PED can achieve (U.S. Anti Doping Agency). On the other hand, masking agents can serve a much contradistinctive purpose, which entails diluting urine samples for drug testing that masks the performance enhancing supplement(s) ("I Play …show more content…
Healthy"). To go alongside the effects of performance enhancing supplements, there are numerous risks involved with the use, and consumption, and/or injection of these illegal drugs. When taking anabolic steroids, men and women may experience: increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture, liver abnormalities and tumors, increasingly high blood pressure, heart and circulatory issues, depression, and stunted growth in teenagers(Mayo Clinic). Other, more prominent physical risks of anabolic steroids include: baldness, infertility, and enlarged prostate gland(Mayo Clinic). Although there has not been a number indicating the amount of deaths caused by PED's, it has been aggressively linked to heart-related death, cardiovascular collapse, depression and suicide from withdrawal, and even cancer-mutated cells(Effects of Performance:"Thank You"). Human Growth Hormones have been associated with severe headaches, loss of vision, enlarged jaw, heart failure, tumors, and crippling arthritis(Effects of Performance). Male specific side effects of performance enhancing drugs include: development of the breast tissue, shrinking of the testicles, impotence, and reduction in sperm count(Effects of Performance). Where as women from the same study where shown to have a deepened voice, cessation of breast development, facial hair, and abnormal menstrual cycles (in which may become permanent)(Effects of Performance). Other than just the side effects of the drugs, injecting the drugs may be as or even more dangerous. In 1984, bodybuilders were recorded to have contracted the AIDS virus after injecting steroids with the same needle(Education Specialty). The International Olympic Committee alongside the U.S Association of Drug Agencies have banned the use of all enhancing supplements that give athletes any unfair and unsportsmanlike advantage over another. This increases the risk of using PED's that much more, because it is illegal in almost all professional competitions. In an article titled "Ethics and Values Build True Sport", researchers conducted multiple experiments and tests on teenagers and have found that the majority of those teenagers who use performance enhancing supplements are unaware of the risks involved with them. Performance enhancing drugs are very prominent in sports because of their potential to improve overall performance and make winning that much more obtainable. One common reason why athletes seek to use PED's is because it "greatly enhances the rate at which protein is retained by the muscles"(Llewelyn, William). When an athlete pictures someone who uses an illegal enhancement, they see a person who is destroying their competition and winning at everything they do. This narrow minded perspective may promotes them to try the drug(s). During the 1970's, the demand for steroids in speed driven sports increased due to the benefits of the drug which includes: allowing athletes to repair muscles tears and strains quicker, which corresponded with longer and much harder workouts that did not take nearly as much time to recover from(Education Specialty). Aaron Cross has been credited by finding out how PED's increase the amount of red blood cells contributing to an accumulation of abnormal amounts of oxygen found in the blood. Cyclists, that Ophir Sefiha has reported, were quoted on saying that PED's are an "occupational necessity". Football players, wrestlers, and runners have shared the same views according to Sefiha. The athletes that are subjected to PED's believe that the only way to succeed or become better than others is not from hard work, dedication, or commitment, but rather cheat by using banned substances to show massive improvements in performance and more specifically individual capabilities. Overall, athletes are persuaded to use these high-volume risk drugs because of their potential for swift boosts in production and ability to skip the slower, more acceptable process of legal training. Performance enhancing drugs and the use of testosterone for athletic experiment and performance was recorded in late 1954 to 1955 for the first time("The WeighTrainer Blog").
Athletes learned from body builders that they could find a quicker and much more effective way of increasing performance while not having to rely solely on determination and skill. Steroid and other PED use have been proven to show how they give athletes a much larger, unfair advantage over a normal athlete. Current data from the University of Olso shows that there is a cellular "memory mechanism" with human muscle with brief use of steroids("Muscles May Permanently"). In this experiment, "Mice were briefly exposed to steroids, which resulted in increased muscle mass and number of cell nuclei in the muscle fibers. Three months after withdrawal of the drug, their muscles grew by 30% over six days following load exercise. The untreated mice grew insignificantly"("Muscles May Permanently"). Due to the result of the mice, human consumption of steroids could have a very similar effect on the 'muscle memory' mechanism. Athletes use these drugs to create an unbalanced playing field. They do whatever it takes to increase their own performance through "synthetic modifications of testosterone" and to be one step ahead of their competition(Mayo Clinic:Pound, Richard). The reason why transitioning PED's from bodybuilding to regular sports was so welcoming, was because most athletes who used these supplements did

Those who believe the use of anabolic steroids should be allowed in professional sports have numerous arguments for those in opposition. Professional sports leagues have tried to stop the use of steroids by drug testing players and punishing those who do not pass. A number of major athletes, such as Lance Armstrong, have been stripped of their athletic accolades due to discoveries of drug use. Despite witnessing the fall of great competitors due to “doping,” people continue to use. Because of unsuccessful attempts at banning the drug, many people believe “it may be time to head in the other direction: legalize performance enhancers” (Smith 1). No matter how many rules and regulations are made against the use of steroids, athletes will continue to abuse the drug in order to get ...
The topic for my stakeholder research paper is performance enhancing drugs. My research is the affects of performance enhancing drugs on athletes and how it affects society. The stakeholders for the research paper are the professional athlete, the college athlete, governing bodies and the fan. The effects of drug use on the professional athlete can cost them their career and also their lives. The college athlete wants to become the fastest or the biggest and nevertheless don’t view performance enhancing drugs as dangerous. Sports governing bodies in the United States have taken action towards controlling the use of performance enhancing drugs. However there is the fan that will still idolize the top athletes even though they use performance enhancing drugs.
The problems with performance enhancing drugs are that they give the user unfair advantages over other athletes and come with many health risks such as baldness. Steroid use can result in very substantial legal consequences and can ruin the user’s reputation. There are many alternatives to steroids but not all of them are safe. Different organizations have different rules on steroids, but in most cases, the user can get suspended, fined, or even both. Various types of steroids can have various short-term or long-term side effects. There are several types of steroids, the most popular ones being anabolic steroids. Historically, steroids have been around for many years, but the debate surrounding them started recently, more specifically a few decades ago. An important term to know is anabolic steroids which are made to work with the user’s muscle mass. Another term to know is clarified by Ida Walker, author of the book, Steroids: Pumped Up and Dangerous, published by Mason Crest Publishers in 2008, defines, peliosis hepatis is a rare condition in which cysts filled with blood form in the liver, if the cysts were to pop then internal bleeding would occur. A positive argument about steroids is stated by Adrianne Blue, author of the essay, “Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Legal,” published in the book Athletes and Drug Use, published in 2009, disputes, “Blue concludes that legalizing performance- enhancing drugs can protect athletes from dangerously abusing them.” The utilization of performance enhancing drugs has left a giant scar on sports and has compromised the achievements of many athletes; therefore, they are transforming the sports world into a drug filled world.
In today’s society in athletics, muscle mass and strength seem more important than in years past. It is believed that many athletes use anabolic steroids to increase their muscle mass and also their strength. Anabolic steroids are a group of synthetic hormones that promote the storage of proteins and the growth of tissue, sometimes used by athletes to increase muscle size and strength. Before the mid 1970’s the use of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS) was used mainly by highly trained athletes especially those involved in weight training. Since then other athletes including those involved in recreational sports and non-competitive sports have started using the steroids. Steroids are also being used by many school age children especially those involved in sports in the schools. Everyone wants to be bigger, stronger, and faster and will do almost anything to gain this.
The era in sports from the late 90s and into the 2000s has often been nicknamed “The Steroid Age” due to the raging use of anabolic steroids and other PEDs (performance enhancing drugs) by professional athletes. The usage of drugs in sports has never been more prevalent during this time, and many people are making it their goal to put an end to the abuse. Influential athletes such as Lance Armstrong, Alex Rodriguez, and Roger Clemens, who were once held as the highest role models to the American people, now watch as their legacies are tarnished by accusations of drug use. The American population, and lovers of sports everywhere, have followed in astonishment through recent years as many beloved athletes reveal their dark secrets. As organizations such as the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) and BALCO (Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative) attempt to halt the use of PEDs, both the drug users and their high-end suppliers work diligently to avoid detection. The use of performance enhancing drugs in recent years has proven to be cancerous to the honesty and competition of modern sports. Although some strides have been made over the past few decades, the use of steroids is in full swing in Major League Baseball, The dangerous side effects of the drugs are often overlooked and many do not realize the message this sends to the youth. The support for halting the usage of PEDs is in need of attention or professional sports will face the loss of all progress made through the past two decades in its war on steroids.
For those who've never heard of the term PED's, Performance enhancing drugs are any supplements that are considered to allow one perform better in their respective sports ,such as anabolic steroids and HGH( Human Growth hormones). The effects of these supplements can range from expediting muscle to increasing one's stamina. PEDs began to become the center of controversy when the I.O.C set up a medical commission to oversee the fight against doping, which ultimately lead to the ban of PED's in professional sports. Stemming off from the I.O.C...
In our days, most people have set the goal and dream to have the perfect body. They believe by having this image, they will be popular and/or attractive. People want to achieve the body that they desire, like a super star, a hero in a Hollywood movie, a strong soldier, and an Olympic athlete. However, what are the extent people will go to get the perfect body? The biggest problem for those who dream to have a beautiful body today, as many people know, is the consumption of steroids. It is amazing what people and athletes will do to enhance their performance, strength and muscle size by taking steroids. Whether right or wrong people who use steroids to become the fastest and strongest will prevail, so who would turn down a substance that could turn them into a super athlete and a muscle man? The purpose of this essay is to inform the reader on the popular anabolic steroids that most people use and the positive and negative side effects of steroid use on its users and finally my personal point of view.
Anabolic steroids are a group of muscle building chemicals, which are synthetic versions of the male hormone, testosterone. Developed in the 1930’s, they were prescribed to aid in muscle tissue repair by those who had undergone surgery or had degenerative diseases. Now the patients do not only use them but also athletes. Starting in the 1940’s steroids were introduced into sports. Steroids were one of the main reasons that Russia’s 1952 Olympic weightlifting team came out with pile of medals. With these results other nations thought their competitors should have the same advantage, and the use of steroids spread like wildfire.(NIDA pg 2) But now steroids are illegal to use if not prescribed by a physician, and have been banned by nearly all-athletic organizations, both professional and amateur.
Abstract: Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always looked for some kind of edge over their competitors. They will do whatever it takes to be one of the elite, and that includes injecting supplements into their bodies to make them bigger, stronger, and faster. Steroid use is probably one of the most common drug misuses in sports competition. Athletes found that with anabolic steroids, one could become a better athlete twice as fast. Not until 1975 was the drug first banned from Olympic competition because of the health risks it produced.
Americans today tend to believe that there are only a select few in sports who are users of steroids. However, according to Julian Savulescu, "20.3% of professional athletes said they have tried drugs or steroids to improve their performance in the game" (3). At this high percentage, about one in five athletes are considered "cheaters". Jacob Beck believes that "using steroids is not cheating if a whole generation of the best and most promising athletes have been doing it" (5). There is no reason to continue trying to catch steroid users when so many athletes take them. All major league sports are filled with steroid use to some extent. It is impossible to have a perfectly "clean" sport without eliminating a good percentage of its players. Since steroids already have a major presence in major league sports and there is no way to ever completely get rid of them, steroid use should be legalized. By legalizing steroids, athletes would no longer have to worry about unsafe or risky suppliers; with prescriptions from doctors, steroids would be safe for the athletes, and users would be less likely to abuse them. Also, the playing fields for all sports would be more equal than they have ever been in a long time. By creating an equal playing field, sport records would be more meaningful and there would be much fewer arguments for cheating or an unfair record. With an increase in muscle strength, there would be fewer injuries and more quality performances, which would make fans more inclined to go to a game knowing there was going to be a great display of strength and athleticism.
Over the last few years, the use of anabolic steroids has gained the utmost prominence and has been appearing in the media much more frequently as compared to the last few years. However, the main cause for concern in today’s society is that there is a huge increase in the usage of such harmful medicines and has become utterly common in today's society. With an increase in the hormone testosterone, any individual would certainly be more aggressive and his/her personality would change by obtaining the particular medicine. Although the use of steroids can certainly improve an individual’s endurance, muscle mass, stamina and strength but they can’t improve the natural ability of an individual and can increase his skill-set (Hartgens & Kuipers, 2004).
Over one million American seek short cuts to larger muscles and greater endurance with anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Steroids are drugs that act like chemical in the body. Most steroids are transformed into testosterone when they enter the body. Testosterone is a male growth hormone. While user may gain short-term results, they are seriously shortchanging their health (Kalawalski 13-15).
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.

Overall it is clear that the need to use performance enhancing drugs is outweighed by the consequences and issues caused by performance enhancing drugs. Sporting events such as the world cup, the Olympics or the World Series make young children feel inspired and encouraged about what they could achieve through dedication and hard work. I feel it is important for the sporting industry as well as the athletes to return respectability to the sport. By
