Okay, hear me out, you probably like the books better than the movies, if you read that is. But in this case, it’s the old version verses a modern retelling. I’m talking about “Perseus” and the story “Percy Jackson”. “Percy Jackson” draws on the legend of “Perseus” by keeping the same side quests and similar characters by modernizing it. It transforms it by creating a new adventure. But how? First of all, the side quest in “Percy Jackson” and the quest from “Perseus” are relatively similar. An example would be Medusa and her quest. In the story “Perseus”, Perseus fought with Medusa (DÁulaires 118). In the modern retelling, Percy uses his phone case in order to see her reflection (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). In both retellings, the quest both have something to do with the mother. In Percy Jackson, Percy’s mother was kidnapped by Hades for a ransom (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). In Perseus, the evil king wanted to marry Perseus’ mom so he sent Perseus to slay Medusa in hopes that he’d never come back (DÁulaires 116). Also, in both retellings, the mother is always very kind and selfless. In Percy Jackson, Sally, Percy’s mother, gave up so many things in order to protect Percy. That included having to be with Gabe Ugliano (Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief). In Perseus, Danae was selfless when she chose to stay with Perseus and the old man rather than leaving or simply leaving with the evil king (DÁulaires 115). Even when Perseus became king after the old fisherman, Danae still stayed by his side with his wife (DÁulaires 122). That shows that she lived her life watching over her son Perseus, very selfless. Of course, with many characters being there in both stories, there has to be more characters that fit the same description in the modern
