Perceptual Illusions
Many of us take our vision for granted. We seem to accurately use our properties of vision with little effort or thinking at all. At times we often see things with our eyes and wonder how can this be possible?
Physicist Richard Feyman once wrote, "It's quite wonderful that we can see or figure it out so easily. Someone who's standing at my left can see somebody who's standing at my right -- that is the light can be going this way across or that way across, or this way up, or that way down; it's a complete network. Some quantity is shaking about, in a combination of motions so elaborate and complicated the net result is to produce an influence which makes me see you, completely undisturbed by the fact that at the same time there are influences that represent the guy on my left side seeing the guy on my right side. The light's there anyway…it bounces off this, and it bounces off that -- all this is going on, and yet we can sort it out with this instrument, our eye" (Introduction to Perception [Online]).
As you can see by this quote, sight is a very complicated process that is easily controlled by our eyes. However, perceptual illusions need a little more explaining.
Take an instant to observe the world around you. If you tilt your head, the rest of the world does not tilt along with you. If you close on of your eyes, you don't suddenly lose your depth perception. Shades of color seem to vary under different levels and types of illumination. What is sense perception? Everything we perceive in our senses can be misleading and an illusion. In the article “Perception and Reality” by Keith Wilson (see Article 1), the author goes over some of the aspects of how our perception deceives us to believe in things that aren’t there to begin with. For example are colors real? Well that is relevantly dependent on what is considered real, because real again is a perception of a single individual collecting information and making “sense” out of it. A color being real or not is dependent on how we see it through our eyes, we can 't say that my blue is the same as your blue. We can 't know for sure if what we are seeing for ourselves, is the same as what the person that views that same thing sees
From one end, what we see right away tends to be the natural obvious. We notice these things right away because they are in plain sight and we are used to seeing them every day without thinking or analyzing what we perceive. For example, the grass is green and the sky is blue. Dillard speaks of a time where she saw a frog and because of the surroundings it was in and its appearance it was hard for her to recognize it for what it was. Dillard described, “I once spent a full three minutes looking at a bullfrog that was so unexpectedly large I couldn’t see it even though a dozen enthusiastic campers were shouting directions… When at last I picked out the frog, I saw what pain...
One wonders what takes place in the brain to cause such phenomenal differences in perception. The cause is unknown for certain, like many things in the realm of science it has not been researched nearly enough, but there are some indications.
Over the past weeks we have learned a lot of new things. I learned about different races, ethnicities, and cultures. The world would not be the same if everyone was the same race and it is a great thing to learn about everyone and where they are from, and where they have come from. Everyone is different in their own way and it is our duty to accept everyone as a whole. I am going to talk about the social construct of race today, some of our readings, and a lot of our discussions that are always fun.
“The Illusionist” is a short story by Steven Millhauser, which was adapted into a movie directed by Neil Burger in 2008 which both take place in Vienna. The short story’s plot revolves around Eisenheim and his relationship between himself and the state, which is still featured in the movie. Eisenheim’s illusions also cause him a bit of trouble; in the short story the cause of trouble is an illusion, which produces two spirits by the name of Rosa, Elis, and a boy who appears to be no older than eight. In the movie adaptation, the final straw that causes the Crown Prince to finally pursue persecution of Eisenheim is the illusion that again, produces a spirit, which turns out to be his dead fiancée. Because of Inspector Uhl’s growing obsession of Eisenheim, throughout the movie and the short story, it further ignites the blur between what is the reality and what is his illusion. Uhl’s obsession over Eisenheim and his illusions helps blur the reality around him.
Our five senses –sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch help the ways in which we perceive the world around us. And while they seem to work independently at time they can effect each other and the way we comprehend something. Seeing something pretty, touching something soft, eating something cold and smelling something rotten are the sense we use to connect with the world around us and will all effect how we move forward in that situation. When you look at the top picture say the color of the word not the word itself. It is harder than it seems and takes a little practice to do it efficiently. A prominent phenomenon in the field of visual science is the motion after-effect (MAE) which is believed to provide a way of bringing together current knowledge of neurophysiology with a measurable visual phenomenon. The MAE is described as a visual illusion produced by viewing any number of motion types (i.e. lateral or vertical linear, spiral, radial or rotation). By viewing a moving physical object for a period of time until the eyes is adapted to the motion. When the motion of the object is stopped, but viewing remains focussed on the object, the viewer may report a slower, reversed/negative movement of the now stationary object (Mather et al, 1998).
Muller-Lyer illusion is one of the most studied perceptual illusions experiment in cognitive psychology. The illusion experiment was created by Psychiatrist Franz Carl Muller-Lyer in 1889. The Muller-Lyer illusion reveals that when three horizontal lines with the same length are presented together. The first line has two outward wings at its end; the second doesn’t have wings; and the last line has two inward wings at its end. Muller-Lyer illusion says that the line with outward wings looks longer than the line without wings, and the other line with inward wings looks shorter than the one without wings. In our CogLab experiment, it is designed to have only a line with outward wings and another line that has no wings showing to the participants; their task was to choose which line is longer than the other in the experiment. In this experiment, the constant stimuli experimental method will keep the length of the line with outward wings constant throughout the experiment. The result will tell us participants’ judgments of physical length may be deluded by the presence of outward wings. Visual perception plays a big part on how we perceive life. If we didn't have perception I don't know where we would be now.
Person P is unable to recognize the difference in the aircraft and the surface of the aircraft. This shows that we see objects mediately through seeing their surface immediately. This seems to be true, but when knowing that we see an object in virtue of seeing their surface still leaves us in the same position that STm is in. Our perceptual view is still worse than when we directly see an object and shows that most, if not all, objects are viewed mediately.
According to Plate, "there is a perceptual relationship that exists between the eye and the mind in the act of seeing. Can we trust what we see to be an accurate perception of reality?"
Perception is defined as the awareness of the world through the use of the five senses, but the concept of perception is often used to isolate one person’s point of view, so how reliable can perception be if no one person’s is exactly the same? The word perception itself is riddled with different, well, perceptions of its meaning. When some hear the word they might automatically think of it as something innately flawed, that can easily be fooled by illusions, while others may think of its usefulness when avoiding scalding a hand on a hot stove. I am here to agree with both and to argue that perception is something necessary and helpful, and something that should be scrutinized for its flaws.
