“The Illusionist” is a short story by Steven Millhauser, which was adapted into a movie directed by Neil Burger in 2008 which both take place in Vienna. The short story’s plot revolves around Eisenheim and his relationship between himself and the state, which is still featured in the movie. Eisenheim’s illusions also cause him a bit of trouble; in the short story the cause of trouble is an illusion, which produces two spirits by the name of Rosa, Elis, and a boy who appears to be no older than eight. In the movie adaptation, the final straw that causes the Crown Prince to finally pursue persecution of Eisenheim is the illusion that again, produces a spirit, which turns out to be his dead fiancée. Because of Inspector Uhl’s growing obsession of Eisenheim, throughout the movie and the short story, it further ignites the blur between what is the reality and what is his illusion. Uhl’s obsession over Eisenheim and his illusions helps blur the reality around him.
In the short story, the narration appears to be as if a friend were telling you a story, as the narrator does not have any real affiliation with the story, while in the adaptation the narrator is very clearly Inspector Uhl, as the ending of the short story is the very beginning of the movie. In the adaptation Inspector Uhl is shortly after seen walking to the office of the Crown Prince and explaining the situation and the failure to formally get Eisenheim into custody. The Crown Prince, of course, is furious and accuses Inspector Uhl of being inadequate. Inspector Uhl, in turn, reverses the accusations as he now has enough evidence to arrest The Crown Prince of killing his fiancée, Sofie. Because of Eisenheim’s web of lies, skill, and cunning – in the movie adaptation – with Inspector Uhl’s eagerness to learn from him, Uhl is deeply wraps himself into Eisenheim’s illusions and master illusion. Even though by the end of it Uhl is rewarded by the secrets of the orange tree illusion and a great sense of wonder by the master illusion, the audience cannot help feel like themselves and Inspector Uhl have been manipulated. Whether it be the short story and the movie adaptation, nothing is what it seems, reality and illusion is greatly skewed.

Deception as an element can be presented in various forms. One may choose to hide their true self for specific intriguing motives in life. A theme identified in "The Possibility of Evil" by Shirley Jackson and "A Bolt of White Cloth" by Leeon Rooke is appearance can be used to deceive ones true self and morals for an intriguing motive. In both short stories, that were examined, both main characters use their exterior appearances to deceive their true morals, they deceive the people around them and lastly their deeds show their true intentions which distinguish their compelling motives which are viewed through a sense of morals.
In the Invisible Man, by Ralph Ellison, our main character struggles to find his place in society. Throughout the novel, he finds himself in "power-struggles". At the beginning of the novel, we see the narrator as a student in an African-American college. He plays a large role in the school as an upstanding student. Later, we see the Invisible Man once again as an important member of an organization known as the Brotherhood. In both situations he is working, indirectly, to have a place in a changing world of homogony. In each circumstance he finds himself deceived in a "white man's world".
The heroes, heroines and villains portrayed in the two versions of the film were drawn quite differently.
Illusion can be defined as a distortion of the senses, of reality, and the perception of a dream like world that consumes us. James Baldwin author of the short story “Sonny’s Blues” uses the unique creativity of illusion to therefore draw in his readers. He uses several literary elements including characterization, plot, and setting to express his elaborate use of illusion in this story. Likewise Nathaniel Hawthorne author of the most controversial short story “The Birthmark” also uses illusion to draw attention to an almost magical setting of mystery and morality. Both of these authors use this theme in their works brilliantly, but in contrasting styles, which on the contrary makes their works masterpieces in distorting the beauty and truth in the world.
Over the past weeks we have learned a lot of new things. I learned about different races, ethnicities, and cultures. The world would not be the same if everyone was the same race and it is a great thing to learn about everyone and where they are from, and where they have come from. Everyone is different in their own way and it is our duty to accept everyone as a whole. I am going to talk about the social construct of race today, some of our readings, and a lot of our discussions that are always fun.
Part of what makes Cooper’s unreliable narration work is the narrative expectations for suspense. Often called “The Master of Suspense,” Hitchcock was known for letting his viewers “play god” by giving them privileged information that the characters on screen don’t have in order to harness the audience's expectations and anticipation. Casetti described this as providing the audience with suspicion, the tools needed to construct a narrative and the motivations of characters (70). Since Cooper and Hitchcock withhold the correct information until near the end of the film they intentionally let viewer build the wrong story and experience a surprise deception. Surprise deceptions, such as the one found in Stage Fright, were not done in the Classic Hollywood Cinema and when paired with traditional models of trust in film open up many layers of exploration into the reaction of the
The Illusion by Tony Kushner illustrates the journey of a lawyer, Pridamant, in search of his son, Clindor. Pridamant ventures off to the cave of the magician, Alcandre, in the hopes that Alcandre will help him find his son. Throughout the play, Alcandre reveals three scenes to Pridamant which show the life of his son. Each scene reveals the same characters. However, in each scene the characters have different names. Pridamant must helplessly watch the perils his son undergoes throughout his life. Although the playwright presents different components in the play, action is the most compelling. The actions that Kushner depict throughout the play compel the reader to continue reading to find out what happens to the characters.

1) In this paper I argue that Corliss Lamont’s argument for freedom of choice is false because three of his eight arguments against the Determinist illusion argument are the same. These three arguments creates one actual argument, I will call them the master argument. Lamont also never provides the full Determinist explanation on the idea that the perception to choose is an illusion. This falsifies his argument and makes it fail as a whole because he is not giving the Determinist illusion argument proper justice.

It means by having a clever trick that you use on someone that is lower than you; power wise. Political Leaders deal with money & have to make deals with others in order to gain more for themselves & to the ones that are higher than them. In order to make those kinds of deals, artifice has to be used. In any way they want to; as long as business is rolling along. Artifice shouldn’t be used in political theater for lots of reasons, but it has its reasons. “Those who have not mastered the art of entertainment, who fail to create a narrative or do not have one fashioned for them by their handlers, are ignored.“
In the book it is supposed to be set in around the 1500’s. In the movie it’s supposed to be set around the 1900’s. The clothing changed to. In the book the clothing was Elizabethan style. In the movie they wore modern clothing. They even changed the families profession. In the movie they’re rich and royal families fighting. In the movie their corporations that are running against one another. Even how Romeo acts changed a bit. In the movie before going to the party, Romeo takes ecstasy; however, in the book he does not. They even changed how he snuck in the Capulet’s house. In the movie he only did it at night, but in the book he was never able to sneak in the house because of security. There’s also a small detail left out of the movie. In the book they had a clown, or jester. In the movie they had no need for a clown, or jester. They even changed the transportation. Illusion’s purpose is questioned in this fact-based world we call reality. Blanche, Stella’s sister, is used to represent illusion. Her whole life, from her diamond tiara made of rhinestones, to her spurious façade, is literally and metaphorically an illusion. The concept of illusions is further developed through the light motif in the play, with Blanche displaying “moth” like characteristics, avoiding “strong light”(pg.3) and “naked light bulb[s]”(pg.54). The light motif also represents a time of innocence, before Blanche’s husband’s death, when there was “blinding light” in her life, but after her husbands suicide, there hasn’t been“ any light that's stronger than this--kitchen—candle” (pg.103). Stanley is an advocate for reality, as shown by his constant struggle to uncover Blanches illusions about her past. Williams suggests that illusion’s serve as an essential part of society. Whether it was Blanches husband’s suicide or Stella’s husband’s participation in rape, illusions are shown throughout the play to help people deal with harsh realities. They help ‘victims’ of reality see “what ought to be truth”(pg.127) through illusions, alleviating unwanted pain.

The author and journalist Arthur Koestler once said “Nothing is more sad than the death of an illusion.” In Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, the main character Willy Loman’s illusion of his life led to the suffering of others due to the fact that he would not accept that he was not as successful as he believed. Biff, Willy’s son lived in his father illusion and when he realized it was all an illusion he was frustrated and fought with Willy. Biff wanted to do the activities he enjoyed and couldn’t because of his father. Happy, Willy’s other son becomes incredibly similar to his father, never leaving his illusion of how flawless his life was. In addition to this Willy’s wife Linda was constantly trying to please Willy keeping him in his illusion even though she knew they were struggling for money.Through the play Willy Loman has an obsession with the American Dream, which causes the suffering of both his sons Biff and Happy and his wife Linda, which increases the tragic vision of the play as a whole.
Illusion vs. reality has been a major running theme in all the plays we have read in class. By interpretation, the idea of illusion is a way to build an alternate fantasy world for oneself where he/she can escape from reality. From all the characters analyzed in class, Blanche from A Streetcar Named Desire would definitely be the one character who is so steadfast on illusion that she lets it shape her life as she believes it is her only way towards a happier life. As seen in the above quote, Blanche chooses to dwell in illusion, for it is her primary defense against the troubles in her life. Illusion has had a freeing enchantment that protects her from the tragedies she has had to endure. However, Blanche is not the only character with this fixation on illusion. In this paper, I will be analyzing other characters like Nora from A Doll’s House, Eliza from Pygmalion and Mrs. Hale from Trifles, who just like Blanche have also succumbed to the world of illusion as opposed to reality.
