The way one views the world around them is a reflection of themselves, as Anais nin clearly stated, “ We see things not as they are but as we are.” perception, the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses, is a key component to how one lives their life. It is the driving force behind one's reaction to the world around them. Perception has a large influence on how things are interpreted such as emotions and meanings as well as making inferences about others. Perception itself can be influenced by others in one's community or the environment. Everyone views the things around them differently. The way one perceives the world around them and the people around them is a gateway to who they really are. In the film, A Soldier's Story, a black officer, captain Davenport, is sent to investigate the murder of a black sergeant, Sergeant Waters, in Louisiana. Sergeant Waters, who was particularly unpopular among the soldiers, had a certain perspective of the people around him. Growing up in a time where black people were bitterly resented by everyone around them. Sergeant waters taught himself to hate and believed that southern black people, who made fools of themselves, were the reason for the hatred black people faced from the white people. If a person is perceived to be a beautiful person they will mold themselves into that to fit the association. The way people view others does have an effect on them. In the biography, What happened, Miss Simone?, Nina Simone, the famous American singer, pianist and civil right activist, utters her life story through a mic. Nina Simone grew up in isolation from other children and a racially separated town. “The worst thing about that kind of prejudice...is that while you feel hurt and angry and all the rest of it, it feeds you self-doubt. You start thinking perhaps I am not good enough”. Throughout her life, she always followed what others told her to do as she was too insecure to make decisions for herself afraid it would be the wrong choice. Nina knew what she wanted in life but she always listened to everyone around her. Soon everyone including, her husband Andy Stroud, perceived her to almost be obedient, she, later on, snapped having frequent Outbursts. Nina Simone viewed herself as not good enough which is why she allowed everyone to control her. It ate her up inside until she no longer could take it and ran away from the show business and her family. She states, “ You’ve got to learn to leave the table when love’s no longer being served”.
