They Control the BRAIN! Most people do not know what a pediatric neurosurgeon is, but when you explain what it is, and then they realize what it is. Ever Since I first saw the movie “Gifted Hands” about Ben Carson’s journey in his life and how much hard work and dedication it took him to become the successful pediatric neurosurgeon he is. I picked this career to write about because I want to be able to save small the lives of small children with neuro issues. I want to be the reasons that conjoined twins end up living in the end. Ben Carson is my inspiration, I want to be as good of a pediatric neurosurgeon as he is. To be a pediatric neurosurgeon you have to be an extremely dedicated person. There is so much hard work that goes into becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon; there is a ton of school that a person has to go through to become this. Doctors studying to be a pediatric neurosurgeon recommends that you should start studying now, while you are still in high school, because if you don’t start studying now you will wish did when you go to medical school. A pediatric neurosurgeon has a ton of weight on their shoulders when trying to figure out how to operate on a specific person and trying to figure out what would be the best way to save that …show more content…
To become a pediatric neurosurgeon, you have to do four years undergraduate school, four years of medical school, and three to eight years residency and internship, that is a total of at most sixteen years (Oklahoma). The first two years of medical school are spent in classrooms and laboratories; the last two years are spent working with patients under supervision of a professional (Oklahoma). After all the schooling, you will definitely think it was worth it, because there is such as small amount of neurosurgeons in the U.S. (Shmoop). If this is what you want to do you definitely need to keep working hard to accomplish your
Obtaining a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing and passing the licensing exam to become a Registered Nurse (RN) must be done first. The curriculum for attaining the degree relies heavily on sciences; mainly biology, chemistry, and anatomy and physiology. After receiving the RN license, the person must have at least 1 year of pediatric nursing experience to begin the process of becoming a pediatric nurse practitioner. Once an RN has obtained the requisite experience, they need to obtain a Master of Science in Nursing degree and take the licensing exam to become a nurse practitioner. The master’s degree program focuses heavily on Health Sciences such as health promotion, advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, nursing theory, and any other specialized courses. (“Nurse Practitioner Educational Requirements”). With the multitude of pediatric nursing specialties available, the student may have to take many different classes. If, for example, the person wants to go into pediatric oncology, they may have to take classes in nutrition, microbiology, reproductive health, oncology, and child and adolescence health. They would also need around one thousand hours of pediatric oncology training and clinical work to get them ready (“How Would I Be a Pediatric Oncology
I have not decided whether I want to be either a general or pediatric surgeon, but it might change in the future once I experience different fields. One thing I learned was that surgeons have to spend a lot of time before and after the operation. One skill I believe I have that is important for this career is that I am prepared to do everything it takes to help my patient, and I am creative in creating new solutions in doing tasks. I think this career interests me the most is because it is broad and is continuously being evolved into more advanced, deeper areas. The hardest part of this profession is number of years of education needed, and the great amount of hours needed to work. The rewarding aspect is that I am saving lives and doing what I enjoy. Right now, I need to do my best in my undergraduate years to prepare for my medical school. In ten years, I want to have completed medical school and begin my residency at a hospital, and be happy about my
In nursing, it is important to understand the difference between the different developmental groups for pediatric patient’s and how these differences affect the care and guidance that patient receives.
Every little kid has high exceptions for what they want to be when they grow up. Some dream of becoming president of the United States of America, or becoming an Astronaut, a lot of little kid’s say that they want to be a Doctor. What kids do not understand is that there are many types of doctors, like an orthopedic surgeon, they work with feet, or an oral surgeon, who work with the mouth. Another similarity to a doctor is a nurse practitioner. They do many of the same tasks, like performing minor surges, fixing broken bones, or simply giving a routine check up. Becoming a nurse practitioner takes many years of schooling, good grades, a lot of time and dedication, and money.
After high school people go to college. College is the step where they will figure out their life-long job. I’ve always have wanted to go into the medical field, but didn’t know what I wanted to do in it. I decided I would like to to be a pediatric oncologist. A pediatric oncologist is a physician that specializes in pediatrics. Pediatric oncologists receive further training in medical oncology. Pediatric oncologists help kids who are fighting cancer.
Was psychosurgery, also known as brain surgery and neurosurgery, safer before the year 2000 or after? First off, what is psychosurgery? Psychosurgery is generally used to treat severe depression and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
Pediatric residents face unique challenges when learning to perform pediatric procedures due to anatomical, physiological, and behavioral differences. Procedural skills are an essential skill as new medical school graduates enter the patient care setting. Traditionally, this training has involved the “see one, do one, teach one” model. However, with the increasing focus on patient safety this is no longer acceptable.
After graduating as a registered nurse (RN), I wish to work as a Neurosurgical nurse practitioner for the public healthcare facilities. A Neurological nurse practitioner is a professional and an experienced registered nurse with the education of Master Degree Level or even Doctorate level (Ph.D.). A Neurosurgical nurse practitioner is required to have detailed knowledge of neurology with experience in neurological condition and treatments. However, the purpose of Neurosurgical Nurse Practitioner is to fill in the gaps between the surgeon and the patients. Building a healthy relationship and communicating with patients as a member of a team is the essential and eternal part of the job. A neurosurgical NP's must be able to make a decision and assessment quickly to follow the course of action
A neurosurgeon is a complex and busy job, with many different aspects. There are the same amount of neurosurgeons now as 1991, and the population has grown by a third, so now they are busier than ever. They usually spent 50-80 hours every week working and 10-12 hours per day. Vacation each year doesn’t extend 3-4 weeks. To become one, you need a 4 year college degree, 4 years of medical school, 1 year as an intern, 5-7 years as a resident. Residency is considered by many the hardest part because you have to overcome sleep deprivation, the ample work hours, and much more. They work in the field of
Gifted Hands is the story of the world famous Pediatric Neurosurgeon, Ben Carson. The book tells of Carson’s journey from the bottom of his fifth grade class to his current position as director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. In his autobiography Carson explains how a strong faith in god, and the help of an extremely strong mother, he was able to overcome not only the doubts of his classmates and teachers but also the doubts of his own intelligence, and turn his life around.
People often anticipate their desire to become doctors at a young age. Perhaps this curiosity in the field of medicine is provoked by a natural knack for science or an inclination to help and impact their community. Throughout my life, the wonders of science have always intrigued my inner curious spirit. Although, I never imagined myself in a doctoral position, but after a traumatic head injury I realized that I wanted to help people the way that I was helped and the mind was my ideal focus. With that being said, becoming a physician specializing in neurology is a long, arduous, expensive process that can only be accomplished with great dedication.
I have dwindled what areas of studies that I like in the medical field in terms of personal preference and how it affects my life in the future. I specifically want to major in neurology, a flourishing and difficult field of study to get into. I do not know for sure if I would rather be a neurologist or neurosurgeon because being a neurosurgeon requires more years of medical experience since I would have to acquire knowledge on surgery, whereas a neurologist does research and consults his patients. Regardless, I assume that both are highly sought after professions, and are revered by many, and I would not mind being either one, but I would prefer to be a neurologist. Neurology interests me because I have always been fascinated with the brain, spinal cord, and nerves that form the complex nervous system. I’m interested in how the nervous system functions and interacts with other systems to form essential bodily functions in each human being. However, not all human beings are lucky to have the ability for a functioning nervous system and are unfortunately diagnosed with nervous disorders that limit their mobility and standard way of life. I am committed to help those that are less fortunate because I have an exorbitant amount of interest for the intricacy and functionality of the nervous system. In addition, I have the uttermost empathy to alleviate a patient’s needs with meticulous care and treatment via
Being a Neurosurgeon takes a lot of responsibility through high school and college. It is long and hard but can be really fun. Has a Neurosurgeon, college is long and expensive, and is quite hard with the learning and exams. The main part of a Neurosurgeon is working with the brain, but you will do other stuff as well. Once you get through college and residency, you will make good money but you will still have major college bills to catch up on. The main parts of being and becoming a Neurosurgeon is, Going to college for a long period of time, working with and doing surgeries on the brain, and getting good money and paying college bills.
The first for years are spent earning a bachelor’s degree in any science-related field. In order to get into the 4 year medical school program an individual must take the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test). After those 4 years in medical school, there is a 2-3 year residency period. Where doctors work first hand in facilities dealing with patients. After this residency the student may take The American Board of Pediatrics exam in order to become a board certified pediatrician. Then after those 3 years, another 2-3 years is required in specializing in pediatric cardiology. After the fellowship another exam is needed to practice as a board certified pediatric cardiologist. In addition to this level of education, there is a possibility to super specialize as mentioned before and that requires another 2-3 years. When thinking about the amount of education it takes to reach to that position is quite mind boggling. The ESTJ personality type usually have innate need to finish a task completely, so once we have our mindset on something it happens. This type of intrinsic motivation is needed throughout a long educational
Since I am intrigued by the children’s personalities, I love spending time with them (and that’s why their child-like ways rub off on me). Thus, I believe that my own childish personality and my love of children will motivate me in the near future to help them out with their medical needs. Also, being a pediatrician and helping out children has its own rewards. Not only will I be doing something I enjoy, but I will be getting paid a generous price as well. A pediatrician’s salary is not the highest compared to surgeons or cardiologists, but it’s enough to have a life that is something more than simply satisfying.
