The 2006 fictional novel, “Tangerine” written by Edward Bloor is about the mystery of Paul’s eyes and the secrets to unlocks the truth behind Paul’s vision. Edward Bloor uses Paul’s eyesight to show the understanding of the character's family and friends. It shows his viewpoint on things and how Paul sees his problems. Through the motif of vision Paul, the main character, grows his understanding on his friends, family, and himself. No doubt, his friends make a big impact on Paul’s perspective and the process of understanding. Making new friends with others that also have disabilities gave them something in common.

Within Oliver Sacks, “To See and Not See”, the reader is introduced to Virgil, a blind man who gains the ability to see, but then decides to go back to being blind. Within this story Sacks considers Virgil fortunate due to him being able to go back to the life he once lived. This is contrasted by Dr. P, in “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for A Hat”, Sacks states that his condition is “tragic” (Sacks, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for A Hat (13) due to the fact that his life will be forever altered by his condition. This thought process can be contributed to the ideas that: it is difficult to link physical objects and conceptualized meanings without prior experience, the cultures surrounding both individuals are different, and how they will carry on with their lives.
Don’t judge a book by its cover. We have all heard this cliché at least once in our lifetime. But how many times have we ever followed through with this expression? The author Raymond Carver writes about an experience where a couple is visited by the wife’s acquaintance Robert, whose wife has recently passed. The fact that Robert is blind belittles him in the eyes of the narrator, causing tension and misjudgment. In “Cathedral”, Carver uses irony, point of view, and symbolism to show the difference between looking and truly seeing.
When Paul and his comrades have to experience Kemmerich's suffering death, they all knew that Kemmerich will pass away, yet they still told him that it was going to be okay and that he will get to go back home and meet his family. The main character, Paul, joins the Lake Windsor Middle School soccer team, and Joey becomes friends with Paul. He thinks that him being friends with Paul would be a normal friendship. With what happens later in the story proves that it wasn’t any usual friendship. The friendship led to Erik, Paul’s big brother, making fun of Joey. Mike Costello, Joey’s older brother, was struck by lightning at his football practice. Joey was trying to help the already dead Mike by taking off Mike’s shoes. Erik first made fun of Mike, calling him mohawk man. He called Mike mohawk man because the lightning singed off half of the hair on his head, making it look like he had a mohawk. Then he made fun of Joey for getting Mike’s shoes off.
Paul believes that everyone around him is beneath him. He is convinced that he is superior to everyone else in his school and in his neighborhood. He is even condescending to his teachers, and shows an appalling amount of contempt for them, of which they are very aware.
Tino gets mad at his rude and impolite comments, so he makes fun of Erik and his humiliating play in football. Erik can not handle the humiliation and disrespect that he is getting and punches Tino. After punching Tino, he goes back into the house and turns back to face Paul. Throughout the story, he makes fun of Paul by calling him a martian.

However, in this novel, blindness is metaphorically related to ‘seeing’ the truth beyond our own bias opinions.
In Raymond Carver's "Cathedral," the husband's view of blind men is changed when he encounters his wife's long time friend, Robert. His narrow minded views and prejudice thoughts of one stereotype are altered by a single experience he has with Robert. The husband is changed when he thinks he personally sees the blind man's world. Somehow, the blind man breaks through all of the husband's jealousy, incompetence for discernment, and prejudgments in a single moment of understanding.
Pauls's Case is the story of a young man who struggles with his identity. Paul feels that he knows where he belongs, but his family and teachers refuse to support his choices. In the middle of Paul's Case, there is a switch in narration. At this point, the reader can associate with Paul and his problems. Paul struggles with both internal and external conflicts, causing him to be quite a puzzling character. From tha perspective of his family and teachers, Paul seems abnormal. From his perspective, however, he seems misunderstood.
