What is leadership? Leadership can be defined by someone having to lead a group of people by example with character. I have chosen two leadership theories that I believe can impact the intercollegiate level by being a resourceful tool. Path-goal theory and situational. They’re similarities and contrast with these two theories when entailing how they can be used by the intercollegiate level.

“Developed by Dr. Paul Hersey in the late 1960s, the Situational Leadership® Model is a powerful, yet flexible tool that enables leaders of all kinds; managers, salespeople, peer leaders, teachers or parents to more effectively influence others.” (Situational Leadership, n.d.)Situational leaders tend to demonstrate four core common and critical capabilities. Situational theory can be a useful tool towards intercollegiate athletics is by having someone who can understand the situation and find a solution to fix their problems. . Focusing on our priorities will help you use the situational leadership model because of how affective it has become and it can distinguish the type of avenues that may need to be directed. For example, when you think about an athletic director, you know they have avenues of problems that arise day in and day out. Well, for them they figure out a plan of contingencies that can avoid their problems. They us e a situational theory model that will help develop a plan beforehand. This tool demonstrates how you are adapted to your environment and the level of expectations are high when working at the intercollegiate level. From the Situational Leadership II Model, the coach is using a high directive and low supportive behavior in which this approach “the leader focuses communication on goal achievement, and spends a smaller amount of time using supportive behaviors.” So just for the coach to tell Michael not to get hit, that simply did not motivate him to do the task. The coach was only being concerned with playing the game the right way. This is where Leigh Anne see’s that the Coach Burt method is not working so she steps in using the high directive and high supportive behavior, which is more appropriate in which she focuses on who Michael is as a person and she relates the game to him in a way he would understand. Leigh Anne as well shows us situational leadership because she adapts to the situation and to Michael’s development level. She even gives him advice that he should get to know his players better, which proves that Leigh Anne has a strong belief that if you know the people you can lead them more effectively. As well we can demonstrate that Leigh Anne has Servant Leadership because she puts her follower first, and helps the follower grow and succeed which is the case of putting Michael first before herself and as well as not caring what others think of her as long as she leads Michael towards the right

Before you can summarize the concepts related to leadership theory, you have to define what leadership is. Leadership is a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task or goals. The fundamental concept of leadership is indirection. In any organization, the leader indirectly impacts the performance of the organization through the performance of individual team members. To make that impact, the leader takes on the role of the coach, and the inspiratory. As the coach, the leader improves the performer's skills. As the inspiratory, the leader inspires the passion required for optimal performance. A good leader can make decisions with a clear mind and will listen to theirs but can run through every consequence and possibility in their head. They take every angle and come out with the best answer for the majority of the people or situations it effects. And will not let their emotions be shut off but will have feeling where it is needed.
In situational leadership theory and path-goal theory, both theories assume that leaders are flexible and can display any or all styles depending on the situation or environment. Situational leadership theory emphasizes the importance of adjusting leadership style based on the needs of the followers. Path-goal theory leaders help followers along their path and are more effective if they adapt their behaviors to the current environment. Situational leadership is a theory which was designed in 1969 by Paul Hersey and Ken Blanchard. The “contingency theories of leadership” states that a leader’s effectiveness is dependent on their behaviours in relation to different situational factors. Thus, situational leadership theory, relates to how a leader 's effectiveness is depend on their ability to adjust their leadership behaviour to the required level of the “followers” capability or if the situation is modified.
Path-goal approach to leadership by House (1971) mentions that the roles of a leader involve primarily increasing individual rewards of followers to gain goal fulfillment and make the path to rewards seamless by clarifying, removing roadblocks and increasing followers opportunities for satisfaction (Dessler & Valenzi, 1977). The theory, which primarily feeds off motivation, has conquered as an acceptably rational explanation for an individual decision-making process. The days when organizations were able to function and prosper based on their product, service, or structural innovations are no longer sufficient to keep them afloat. Nowadays, companies are required to pay extra attention to the leadership process that makes things happen.
In Situational Leadership theories it is highly recognized the workplace is a complex setting subject to rapid changes. For this reason, it is unlikely that there is one specific way to deal with such arising situation hence leading effectively depends on the situation at hand.
Leadership is the ability of an individual to influence, motivate and inspire others (Gill, 2006). It is therefore defined as a process whereby a leader influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2013). A leader has to make a decision for something to happen and provide his followers with clear direction (Rost et al, 1991). It will evoke feelings of challenge, excitement and involvement for the followers to proceed with the task (Gill, 2006).
For example, under this theory the leader would employ High Directive/High Support leadership behaviors to the Disillusioned Learner. Ideally, the leader helps the followers as they progress through the stages to achieve the Self-Reliant Achiever/Delegating level. While I do not necessarily fully subscribe to the theory, it does seem to have merit and I do believe that it is important for an effective leader to have the capability and flexibility to adapt his or her style to the needs of the followers in order to encourage everyone’s success. I also believe that an effective leader plays a significant role in promoting and molding individuals’ readiness as it relates to motivation and commitment. As such, I developed my leadership assessment with these points in mind. Path-goal theory deals with the leader's style to motivate followers, to accomplish set goals (Northouse, 2010). The path-goal theory is simply the implication that a leader works with an individual to establish a goal. The leader does this by individual motivation to achieve the proposed goal, while working through obstacles that may hinder achieving that goal (Whitener, 2007). The basic assumption of path-goal theory is that the following motivates subordinates: the capability to perform the work, their efforts will result in a certain outcome, and the payoff will be worthwhile (Whitener, 2007). The path-goal theory is a pragmatic approach that the leader uses to motivate the followers to achieve the set goals.
Situational leadership approach is the most widely used training and development source for leaders today. 3 Introduction: The purpose of this presentation is to show how organizations that utilize the situational approach to leadership prefer this model in that it is ?easy to apply and conceptualize,? (Northouse, 2016, pg. 102). Northouse (2016) talks about the SLII Approach being more practical for managers to use in a real-world situation.

There are many different types of theories on leadership. There is Fiedler’s contingency theory, situational theories of leadership and House’s path-goal theory. These theories are used to make an individual or manager a more effective leader. They can be used as a guide for individuals and help them achieve whatever goal is set out by their organization or group.
What Leadership Means to Me To me, leadership is how well you perform in a group, how you take control of the group, and how you excel when given the chance to help others do what they are supposed to be doing or what if they will need help. Communication is key while you are being a leader, if you sit and just stare at each other, than you that group will not get anything done, they need to speak to each and every group member seeing on what they think and what they enjoy. For example, one of the group members could have read and understood the prompt one way, while the real instructions or directions where almost the complete opposite. Last year, the Leadership class did an experiment where a picture was supposed to be drawn.
According to Shockley and Zalabak (2009) "Leadership is a process of guiding individuals, groups, and entire organization in establishing goals and sustaining action to support goals.Leadership is like mapping out where you need to go to win".
