Introduction
Patagonia is an outdoor equipment and clothing company that was established by Yvon Chouinard and inspired by a group of climbers and surfers who were ultimately trying to find a better way to do what they love. The company began by creating climbing equipment and has expanded by fabricating clothing as well for sports including paddling, fishing, surfing, running, skiing, and snow boarding. These sports allow one to develop a connection with nature, and Patagonia’s products alike. Early on, they became set apart from their competition by their genuine ecological interest and holistic commitment to the health of our planet, which has put Patagonia at a competitive advantage and has led them to the top of the industry.

Ever since they joined this alliance, Patagonia has pledged 1% of sales to the preservation and restoration of the environment. In addition, they understand that profit and loss are directly correlated to the company’s health, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of the industry.
“We know that our business activity – from lighting stores to dyeing shirts – creates pollution as a by-product. So we work steadily to reduce those harms. We use recycled polyester in many of our clothes and only organic, rather than pesticide-intensive, cotton. Staying true to our core values during thirty-plus years in business has helped us create a company we're proud to run and work for. Patagonia has created a work environment solely based off self-management and allows employees to work when and how they please, as long as they complete their work efficiently and in a timely manor. Some of the distinctive benefits that the company provides for their employees include flexible work arrangements, a very casual dress code, informal atmosphere, no private offices, healthy food, onsite day care, minimum bureaucracy, ad an anti-growth mentality. For example, at Patagonia’s office in Ventura, California, there is no dress code or specified shifts that employees have to work. And surprisingly, Yvon Chouinard, has the same desk as all the rest of the employees, representing equality in the work place, no matter individual employee’s positions.
