My passion for Midwifery was sparked after I observed the delivery of my nephew. It was one of the most exciting, rewarding and moving experiences I have ever gone through. It showed me how midwives are essential as they are first form of contact for the mother and baby. It has further reinforced my enthusiasm for studying Midwifery because it showed they play a vital role in caring for the mother and the baby in the period which leads up to the labour, birth and early postnatal period.
Attending antenatal classes with my pregnant sister gave me some knowledge and skills I need to be successful in Midwifery. It showed me how midwives not only provide support and key information for the mother during her pregnancy and preparing for the baby's birth, but that they are responsible for providing care and non-judgmental support to women so they can make knowledgeable choices about their care. Working in a care home showed me how trust and empathy is crucial in this career. Individuals need to be valued. Studying Sociology and Religious Studies has given me the ability to understand different cultures and families respectfully with an open mind. This is essential because midwives must observe each mother's unique requirements for example age, medical background and they must ease them. I have mentored children who were finding it difficult to adapt into school. This is useful because I can ensure people in my care feel comfortable. I realise midwives need to build trust into relationships. I believe shadowing at a Pharmacy gave me an insight as to how confidentiality is key so they can meet the needs of their patients. Furthermore, my multilingual ability has helped to build my confidence and communication
