The Office, originally a British television series that ran for two seasons, inspired an American version also titled The Office. Parks and Recreation was initially written as a spin-off to the US The Office before becoming its own show. The Office is the Dunder Mifflin paper company branch in Scranton, Pennsylvania, managed by the infamous Michael Scott. Parks and Rec is about the Parks and Recreation Department in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. It is directed by Leslie Knope. The two shows are similar because of the shared workplace mockumentary format and shared writers such as Greg Daniels and Micheal Schur. They have been highly debated amongst the fans after they both grew in popularity. So, which is better: Office or Parks and …show more content…
Additionally, Parks and Rec has amazing world-building. Government employees can go out into Pawnee and interact with the very unique town and townspeople. The Office is pretty strictly confined to the Dunder Mifflin building and maybe that's why I liked “Dundies” or “Dinner Party” more because they escaped this; they were at Chili’s or Michael's house. The Office contains mostly episodic plot lines where a new conflict is introduced and resolved all in one episode. In Parks and Rec, on the other hand, the characters are working toward something and they have the motivation to move the plot along throughout the season. Parks and Rec also has incredibly strong talented women which is so important, as they are often the butt of the joke and are under-represented in comedy. In The Office, women are more often objectified and get many sexual remarks from men like Michael. Parks and Rec has these developed side characters that create a wonderful dynamic in the Parks and Rec department. In The Office, most of the characters just sit at their desks for the whole episode while Michael, Jim, or Dwight get too much screen time. One great example of these side characters is Creed. Everything Creed does or says makes me crack up, but he hardly ever speaks. Don't get me wrong, I love both shows–just not equally, and sometimes when proving why Parks and Rec is better, I don't mind criticizing The Office. For me, it's not entirely what I think is funnier; though, I did laugh 100 more times at Parks and Recreation than I did at The Office. It's entirely the character. I know The Office is supposed to have a bunch of weird characters, and that is what makes them so funny, but I love every character in Parks and Recreation. I wish I could have the extremely caring Leslie as a friend, or Ron as a boss, or Andy to
There are many similarities and differences between the story “The Most Dangerous Game” and the episode of Gilligan's Island that we watched. Some similarities include: someone is being hunted, the setting is similar, and both victims get away in the end. Some differences include: the moods of the stories, the strategies that are used by the huntees, and how the hunter got to the island.
After watching Snowpiercer (2014) of Dir. Bong Joon-Ho, I found that this film is an interesting and typical dystopian movie, which has many same content and features as other dystopian films. The media artifact I chose, which is related to the Snowpiercer is call The Truman Show directed by Peter Weir. It is a 1998 American satirical science fiction film and has many elements that relate to dystopian.
The Andy Griffith Show and I love Lucy have been two of the most watched shows in the history of television aired on CBS. I Love Lucy was a scripted sitcom recorded in front of a live studio audience with multiple cameras to give it better comic energy. It took place in an apartment in New York and her husband was an upcoming Cuban American who sung in a band. Although this was a black and white film, Lucy and Ricardo had colorful personalities. Lucy was always dressed nicely and Ricardo was always in a suit or business like attire. The house was always spotless as she was a housewife and an excellent mother later on. Lucy had a way of getting into trouble but Ricky somehow managed to get them out. She also displayed some traits that women were stereotyped for such as not showing or looking your age, being careless with money, and other secretive things. Ricardo on the other hand was the total opposite of Lucy which in the end balanced out their relationship. He has more patience than most and when he gets extremely mad, he would speak reall...
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2007) women’s labor force participation raised from 33.9% in 1950 to 57.5% in 1990. The TV shows Married with Children and Roseanne are similar and different in the way they portray that statistic through their gender roles. Married with Children shows the more traditional type of gender roles, while Roseanne shows gender roles that were not as common in past decades. Both shows exemplify gender roles that were common and rare compared to decades prior. The TV shows, Married with Children and Roseanne are similar and different because of the gender roles each television show displays.
Is there really difference between sitcoms today and sitcoms made back in the day? You would think there would be major differences between the two, when in fact, they are actually quite similar, with only a few minor differences. Although Modern Family and Full House take place in two completely different time periods, the characters have many similar characteristics, the plot lines are very similar and the setting is near the same as well. With all these things alike, of course, there are a few differences as well.
Coney Island a neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York City that is well known for the beach amusement park component attached to the moniker. Coney Island is also the setting in two works of literature such as Guillermo Cotto-Thorner’s novel Manhattan Tropics and José Martí’s newspaper article “Coney Island”. Although these two pieces were written in different times, Cotto-Thorner in and Martí in. They have distinctive similarities and difference.
Often times in our life, we may come across a lifestyle of a character from a fictional book, movie or tv show, that is different than our owns. It could be a life that we would dream to have or a life that we could not possibly imagine having. Focusing on the childhood aspects of a lifestyle, my young self would often compare my childhood to the protagonist in one my favorite cartoons (“Fairly Odd Parents”) Timmy Turner. Timmy’s childhood was a lifestyle that enthralled me from how similar yet different it was from my own.
The Greatest Gift of a Wonderful Life Have you ever gotten something really amazing for your birthday? Like that one toy that everyone else had on the playground that you wanted so badly? Or that clothing item or accessory you saw in your favorite magazine? Whatever it was, it probably wasn’t as great as the gift you got on your first birthday: the gift of your life. Written in 1943, Philip Van Doren Stern wrote the short story “The Greatest Gift” to send to his friends and family instead of Christmas cards.
The Office emphasizes how hegemonic concepts about gender, race, homophobia, and sexuality exist in society and culture today and it highlights the oppression that individuals place on those particular views. I find that Michael’s character symbolizes a physical representation of oppressive topics in our society. His character, as aforementioned, is oblivious to the fact that he represents such views, which one could say shows how our society has a tendency to operate. The audience definitely feels outraged due to many comments he makes, but personally, I think he is just putting a voice to the several stereotypes that exist in culture. As I mentioned above, many people do not like or are not entert...
I will discuss a T.V show that began in 1987 and ran until 1995 and compare that to a T.V show of today Modern Family; which first aired in 2009. The two are both American family sitcoms and comedies that have had great success throughout the air. These two shows are both unique in their own way. Full House is based in the late 80’s and early 90’s in San Francisco. Now Modern Family is today and still on air going for the 7th season based in the suburbs of Los Angeles. That if you look at the family photo of the entire Modern Family cast and the complete Full House cast shows how the typical sitcom family has changed over the time. 80’s to present
Freaks and Geeks is a show set back in 1980s over what life was like for the average high school teenager. The show goes over multiple dilemmas each episode that focus on two or more stereotypical teens in this time. The show focuses mainly on a pair of siblings named Lindsey and Sam. In this show you have your geek kids, like Sam, who are so awkward no one else talks to them. Then you have your so called “freaks” who aren’t afraid to get into trouble just for the fun of it, which is what Lindsey aspires to be like. While watching this show I have come to identify more with the geeks in this show rather than the freaks. More specifically, I would consider myself much like Lindsey’s younger brother Sam.
modern science fiction, they are not the same. Star Trek and Star Wars each posses
The American version of The Office debuted in 2005 with the start of its six-episode first season. After the airing of the “Pilot” episode, a reviewer from the Deseret Morning News commented, “Maybe […] after The Office dies a quick death on NBC, the network will decide that trying to Americanize British TV comedies isn’t such a great idea” (quoted in Pilot (The Office)). Despite its original negative reception, The Office went on to run nine successful seasons and has become a television favorite of individuals across America. The show focuses on the misadventures of the lost souls employed at Dunder-Mifflin Scranton, a branch of a paper-selling company located in Pennsylvania. Under the management of clueless Michael Scott, characters such as Dwight Schrute, Jim Halpert, and Pam Beesly must hold their jobs in the corporate world while facing company failures, romantic encounters, and lost dreams. Despite their seemingly superficial appearance, the characters of The Office reflect complex ideas about morals, existence, and free will through their comical fallacies. The popular television show The Office demonstrates existential ideas such as Sartre’s “bad faith,” Kierkegaard’s stages of life, and the theater of the absurd.
The two hit sitcoms Friends and Full House may not appear similar to the eyes of most audiences but the more a viewer watches the more Friends and Full House collide to be almost identical. Despite the different locations, time period, and actors there’s not much that separate Friends and Full house. Comedy, drama, and life lessons can be found throughout the seasons of both sitcoms.
