When it comes to parent-teacher communication have you ever thought about the different types of parents. The journal article I found talks all about the different types of parents and what they think about communication with teachers. There are five different communication patterns that were discovered when parents that were asked to take part in a survey were put into six focus groups then asked questions about what they think parent-teacher communication should be like. In the next few paragraphs I will be summarizing the article and then talking about how this fits in with teaching and then lastly talking about my own personal experience with the topic. The five different communication patterns are as follows, communication-literate and flexible parents, passive-positive parents, active-positive parents, passive- negative parents and last active- negative parents. Each of these view communication with the teacher and school differently so these are their attitudes upon how they feel. Flexible is already what it says these parents liked the communication but thought about when they should be active with the teacher. Passive- positive parents agree with the teacher that communication doesn’t need to happen between them. Active- positive parents work very closely with the teachers and communicate daily. Passive- negative parents were described as most complicated causing problems in the overall communication with the teachers. This is because these parents have bad experiences with other schools and or teachers and their literacy is also low. Active- negative parents are said to benefit from the support to enhance their social skills. Without communication between parents and teachers everyone would be lost even the children. When teachers and parents communicate it’s not just about their children it’s also about what’s going on at the school and to try and get the parents involved. Involving the parents helps out their children in the long run. This is because example if they need help with a project that the whole school is working on, and the teacher sent out an email or even talked about it during their parent- teacher conference now the parent has knowledge of what’s going on and can help their child. When there is a happy child there is a happy parent, so communication between the teacher and the parent is very important to be. I can relate this article to my mother when I was a child in elementary school. My mother always kept in contact with my teachers each year. They would communicate either email or she would write her notes and put them in my weekly folder for me to give to them. My mother also went to almost all of my conferences and even school activities. She loved helping out so I would say my mother was an active- positive parent since she worked closely with my teachers helping out whenever she could. My mother loved helping me with my work when she understood it even then she still liked learning from
