When it comes to parent-teacher communication have you ever thought about the different types of parents. The journal article I found talks all about the different types of parents and what they think about communication with teachers. There are five different communication patterns that were discovered when parents that were asked to take part in a survey were put into six focus groups then asked questions about what they think parent-teacher communication should be like. In the next few paragraphs I will be summarizing the article and then talking about how this fits in with teaching and then lastly talking about my own personal experience with the topic. The five different communication patterns are as follows, communication-literate and flexible parents, passive-positive parents, active-positive parents, passive- negative parents and last active- negative parents. Each of these view communication with the teacher and school differently so these are their attitudes upon how they feel. Flexible is already what it says these parents liked the communication but thought about when they should be active with the teacher. Passive- positive parents agree with the teacher that communication doesn’t need to happen between them. Active- positive parents work very closely with the teachers and communicate daily. Passive- negative parents were described as most complicated causing problems in the overall communication with the teachers. This is because these parents have bad experiences with other schools and or teachers and their literacy is also low. Active- negative parents are said to benefit from the support to enhance their social skills. Without communication between parents and teachers everyone would be lost even the children. When teachers and parents communicate it’s not just about their children it’s also about what’s going on at the school and to try and get the parents involved. Involving the parents helps out their children in the long run. This is because example if they need help with a project that the whole school is working on, and the teacher sent out an email or even talked about it during their parent- teacher conference now the parent has knowledge of what’s going on and can help their child. When there is a happy child there is a happy parent, so communication between the teacher and the parent is very important to be. I can relate this article to my mother when I was a child in elementary school. My mother always kept in contact with my teachers each year. They would communicate either email or she would write her notes and put them in my weekly folder for me to give to them. My mother also went to almost all of my conferences and even school activities. She loved helping out so I would say my mother was an active- positive parent since she worked closely with my teachers helping out whenever she could. Effective communication is a key principle for developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults. By ensuring that communication is effective it provides clarity on what behaviour is expected and a clear understanding of the tasks. In providing this children and young people will feel they are able to join in and it also provides positive experiences in variety of situations. The result is children will feel more at ease within the school setting and with those around them. By listening to what a child, young person or adult has to say a sense of value and self-worth can be achieved, which forms another factor in developing positive relationships, trust.
Teachers have a significant role with the children; they are their leader in learning and development. Teachers have to plan effectively so the students will be able to learn and grow from the different activity’s this it why it is important that teacher take the responsibility and know the goals of the programs and their curriculum so they can plan accordingly. As a future educator, I want to create a system to where my students’ parents know exactly what their child has learned that week, any problems that have arose, their strengths and weaknesses, and what they can do at home to ensure their child is growing academically. This could be done through a simple note home that the parent would have to sign. I think that as a teacher, I must remedy students academic problems through communication with the parents. Whether I am communicating directly or indirectly with parents, the outcome can only be better than what it would be without any communication at all.

Research shows that children do better in school when parents talk often with teachers and become involved. Kids whose parents interact with teachers usually get higher grades and test scores, develop positive attitudes about school, and are better behaved. Parents and teachers need to communicate on a regular basis, not just at parent/teacher conferences. But sometimes, a parent doesn’t know just how to go about getting involved or how to make that positive connection with the teacher and/or school.
Parent involvement is one of the most influential aspects of student motivation. The parents are the initial teachers of the child before the child goes to school and encounters education through a teacher. If a parent is completely engaged in the learning process with a child, there can be growth between the child and the parent simultaneously. A lot of children have two main educators in their life; their parents and their teachers. Parents are their first educators, the majority of what a child learns in the first few years of their life is taught by their parents. It is only when the child starts to attend an early years setting that they start to learn from another educator. Both parents and teachers continue being a major influence on their children's learning all throughout school and for the rest of their lives. The parents and the child's school both have important roles to play in the child's education and should therefore work together as a team. Parents can get involved in many different ways such as; getting involved with the school itself by helping in the classroom or supervising lunch and break times, or for those parents who work in the day and cannot find the time to help at the school they can get involved by; reading to their child at home, assisting with homework and other learning activities, teaching them songs or nursery rhymes and letting them help with everyday tasks like cooking, baking and chores. This can be categorised as: Involvement of parents in the school life or involvement of parents in supporting the individual child at home.
Parental involvement promotes the social growth of a child. Children whose parents are involved in their education have many advantages. They have better grades, test scores, long-term academic achievement, attitudes and behavior than those with disinterested mothers and fathers (Gestwicki, 2001). Parents becoming involved in their child's schooling creates extra sources of social constraint to influence the child's behavior (McNeal, 2001). For example, parents talking to their children and becoming involved in the school conveys a message to the child of education being important. Parents should be talking with your children's teacher and letting her know about your family. The more she knows about your child, the better she will be able to connect with your child.
In the reading it brings up how most parents are only contacted by the school when it is something bad. This is not how it should be. Teachers should be sending home good news notes to the parents praising the students for their hard work in the class. Schools also need to be welcoming to the families and provide workshops to assist in the parent’s knowledge to allow them to help their children with their schoolwork.
