I never considered working in the medical field until after I turned 30. Up to that point, I planned to continue enjoying my work in the automotive industry until retirement. I started selling cars in Georgia at age 19 and now I was the general manager of a luxury store in Hawaii. I loved my job! A career change never entered my mind until my physician recommended surgery for the abnormal bone growth in my feet. One month of non-weightbearing post operation gave me a lot of time to reflect on my life. Plus, it opened my eyes to the world of medical professionals. In contrast to the business arena, which is focused on profits, the nurses and doctors were more interested in making me feel better. This became more apparent as I started physical therapy. In turn, the hands-on applications of my medic class elucidated many of the topics at my university. Plus, working as a medic means that I am usually the first responder at the scene. I gain more confidence as I conduct systematic assessments and make timely decisions. Perceptions determine when an emergency occurs. I continually learn how to assess the patient and situation systematically, objectively and efficiently; then relay those findings tactfully. My goal is to inform the patient candidly and respectfully while providing them with comfort, reassurance, and confidence. Equipped with this information, I make executive decisions towards resolving the patient’s complaint. Most importantly, I learn how to remain calm through the chaos. Contrary to television programs, responding to 911 calls is rarely about action and excitement. While ACLS and other skills are vital to being a good EMT, more often I employ compassion.
