The myth concerning the creation of Pandora and her opening of “Pandora’s box” is one of the etiological stories surrounding the formation of women and their archetypal role in society. Pandora was meant to be a punishment to manhood due to Prometheus’ (Forethought) trickery when he misled Zeus to choose a lesser portion of an ox that was split between him and man, and also when Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mankind without permission. In order to reprimand Prometheus and mankind for their cruel deception, Zeus calls upon his siblings and children to help him create an evil gift, Pandora, also known as “all-gift” (since all the gods created her by contributing a “unique gift”). Zeus presented Pandora to Epimetheus (Afterthought), Prometheus’ brother, and ultimately gave the evil gift of women to all of mortal men as well. …show more content…
During this archaic time period, women were seen as seductive temptresses who caused misery and stress to men and used them for their wealth that then left men in poverty.
This can be seen in Hesiod’s Theogony when he states, “For from her comes the race of female women: for of her is the deadly race and tribe of women, a great woe for mortals, dwelling with men, no companions of baneful poverty but only of luxury.” Women are seen as foolish creatures that only led to trouble. Hence, Pandora, the first woman given to mankind, gave in to her curiosity and opened the tempting storage jar that held all the miseries and evil in the world. She closed the jar just in time to save hope from escaping, but it was too late to save mankind from the rest of the wicked
contents. In Greek culture, Pandora is acknowledged as the first woman on Earth. This is a parallel to the story of Eve, who is seen as the first woman on Earth in Hebrew history. Both women were tempted in some way that led to misfortune for the human race. Pandora was tempted to open up the storage jar and Eve tempted Adam to eat the forbidden apple against God’s will. Both Pandora and Eve are similar in that they are seen as predecessors of the women race, and because of their curiosity, are the reason the world is cursed to this day (“Pandora, the first woman on Earth”). There is no symbolic truth of a woman’s behavior behind this irrational myth of the creation of women. Instead, this is a strong representation for the typical viewpoint an average Greek male would have towards women during this time period. Greeks during this time period saw women to be submissive to men, but they are also seen has enchantresses who had an extreme sense of “sexual curiosity” and an “almost uncontrollable spirit, and an irresistibility to men” (“The Complete Athenian Woman”). Women were perceived as not being able to control their urges and would often tempt and seduce men into marrying them. When they were married men would then have to provide for both themselves and their wives, which would diminish their wealth, forcing them into poverty. Pandora, being symbolic of the evil and burdens brought upon men, signifies that men only saw women as being a misfortune. Women were not allowed to work, so they were observed to consume the income of their man’s labor. This led to the Greek men to a catch-22 situation. If you try to escape women and don’t marry, you will live a lonely life and will have no one to take care of you in your old age. If you get married, you are forced to work even harder and longer in order to provide for your wife and your family. Women are seen as evil and potential chaos in a man’s life, which continues to feed into the patriarchal society that the archaic Greeks had. Women were forced into submission so they could be controlled in hopes of men to avoid even more misery. Zeus in this sense, made sure that no man could escape the evils of women. They can either decide to escape poverty but die alone and sad, or they could decide to marry and lose their wealth (“Pandora: The Beautiful Evil”). This is all unfounded thinking. If women would be taken out of this patriarchal society and would rather be seen as equals, they too could work for their families and bring in money creating a lesser burden upon the males of the family. The myth of Pandora is merely an excuse created by Hesiod and other historical Greeks for why men have natural instincts to be “tempted” by women and for the “gruesome burden” they must carry by being the breadwinners of the family because they refuse to see women as their equals.
One of the plays found in Nine Muses is “Pandora”. This play is about Hesoid, a Greek poet, who describes the creation of the universe of gods and humankind. He shares a story about “a gift for humankind” (P.22) or in other words, the first woman Pandora. As she enters the mortal world, she becomes the wife of Epimetheus, the brother of Prometheus, a titan. Epimetheus’s brother told him he is not to have anything to do with the gods, and when he found out that Pandora was a gift from the gods, he told her he told her that he could not accept her- a gift from the gods. Pandora finds a beautiful clay jar hidden behind a curtain, while searching for the “wife” of Epimetheus. Pandora reaches to open the jar assuming it has Epimetheus’s wife in it but Epimetheus stops her explaining that there are terrible things in the jar. The very creation of women was set as a punishment to man because Prometheus, son of Iapetos, tried to trick Zeus into eating bones and then, with the tube of a fennel, steals fire to give to mankind. Zeus then proclaimed, "To set against the fire I shall give them an affliction in which they will all delight as they embrace their own misfortune." Out of Zeus' anger came Pandora, the first woman. Zeus ordered Hephaestus to mold women from the earth and water, Athene to dress and adorn her, Temptation to give her necklaces of gold, and Hermes to implant a bitch's mind and a thief's temper. Hesiod describes women as a "precipitous trap, more than mankind can manage." Hesiod states, "even so as a bane for mortal men has high-thundering Zeus created women, conspirators in causing difficulty." And thus the first woman was named Pandora, Allgift,-"a calamity for men who live by bread." And so Pandora and all the evils of the world, except Hope, were released into the world by a punishing Zeus. Hesiod explains how formerly the tribes of men lived "remote from ills, without harsh toil and the grievous sickness that are deadly to men." From Pandora descended the female sex, "a great affliction to mortals as they dwell with their husbands- no fit partners for accursed Poverty, but only for Plenty." Looking back through many historical time periods, people are able to observe the fact that women were generally discriminated against and oppressed in almost any society. However, these periods also came with women that defied the stereotype of their sex. They spoke out against this discrimination with a great amount of intelligence and strength with almost no fear of the harsh consequences that could be laid out by the men of their time. During the Medieval era, religion played a major role in the shaping of this pessimistic viewpoint about women. The common belief of the patriarchal-based society was that women were direct descendants of Eve from The Bible; therefore, they were responsible for the fall of mankind. All of Eve’s characteristics from the biblical story were believed to be the same traits of medieval women. Of course, this did not come without argument. Two medieval women worked to defy the female stereotype, the first being the fictional character called The Wife of Bath from Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The second woman, named Margery Kempe, was a real human being with the first English autobiography written about her called The Book of Margery Kempe. In these two texts, The Wife of Bath and Margery Kempe choose to act uniquely compared to other Christians in the medieval time period because of the way religion is interpreted by them. As a result, the women view themselves as having power and qualities that normal women of their society did not.
Hesiod tells the story of how the curse of Pandora came to be in his writing. In his two works Hesiod, Works and Days and Hesiod, Theogony that contain the story of Pandora are both writing in a slightly different perspective. However, at the end both have the same meaning to them. That Zeus created women as a punishment for men. In developing this meaning in both poems Hesiod uses a few different things in each story as oppose to telling the same story for both. Hesiod, Works and Days and Hesiod Theogony have the same meaning and most of the same plot but different in some aspects.
This sort of idea is further exemplified in The Histories by Herodotus. This is a primary text source. The historian Herodotus has many examples of how women were treated in society, published around 440 B.C.E. One story regarding Candaules and his vision of his wife as an object is a prominent case of how women were regarded as property:

Ovid demonstrates that the humans in this myth portray the role of a god, where they repopulate Earth with righteous humans, thus creating order in the universe again. In Hesiod’s myths Theogony and Work and Days, the formation of the female species is created. Both myths illustrate how the new female species is the doom for mankind. Pandora is a figure used by Hesiod to explain how females first came to be. Hesiod’s anger and bitterness towards women is seen in both texts. Hesiod perfectly describes his feelings towards females when he says they are evil and a curse for mortal men.
