Surrealism was considered a cultural movement of the time and started in the early 1920s. The aims of the Surrealists of this time seemed to follow day to day life and all they tried to show in their works were to target dream and reality. It targeted the inconsistent of the reality and dreams. They also aimed to target the element of surprise.
To me personally I am not a big artist type person but the biggest Surrealist artist that speaks to my subconscious life most directly would be the great Pablo Picasso. Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War and still embraced nowadays by many artists. In order to understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, and for whom this style was an integral part of their lives.
Surrealism in the 1920s was defined as a fantastic arrangement of materials that influenced Miró, due to the fact that he was one of the most original and sympathetic artists during the Surrealism periods. Miró was born into the Catalan culture in April 20,1893 in Barcelona, Spain (Munro 288). Having to be born into the Catalan culture gave Miró an opportunity to have an intense nationalist activity. Surrealism was a means of reuniting conscious and unconscious realms of experience so completely that the world of dream and fantasy would be joined to the everyday rational world in “an absolute reality, a surreality.” The major surrealist painters were Jean Arp, Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Rene Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dali, Pierre Roy, Paul Delvaux, and Joan Miro. Surrealism is an artistic movement that started in the 1920’s inspired by Freud’s theories as well as included spontaneous, unconscious and bizarre ideas. It would combine together ‘two [apparently] contradictory states of dream and reality into a sort of absolute reality, or surreality.’ It was all led by Andre Breton and a few other Surrealists as they saw and recognised that cinema had mass appeal which meant that they could bring their work to a mass audience. The overall sentiment of surrealism can be described as “weird,” or “unnatural.” The fascinating part of the definition of the movement is that it cannot be tied down to one specific approach. Although auteurs have used similar motifs in creating surreal moments, it can vary in many ways, taking on different shapes and forms in film. Perhaps this is why the definition of the movement needs to keep a generalization in order to wholly express itself.
Surrealism is the artful manipulation of dream vs. reality, where elements of both are intermingled into a unified mastery. It harnesses the subconscious dreamlike realm of the viewer and exploits a visual that is both a truer and more authentic sense of imagination. Salvador Dali, a prominent Spanish surrealist painter, successfully conveys these principles within his most widely recognized work “The Persistence of Memory”, also known as “Clocks”. This painting encompasses the presence of clocks with different times melting against the fantasy-like background of a seaside landscape. The presence of an animalistic figure lying on the sand also graces the painting. In addition, the combination of various deformed clocks placed strategically within the painting, in order to create a visual movement, highlights the manipulation of space and chronology. It is finished with a varnish of an open lonely space and an unbearable sense of quiet. By doing so, he creates a perfect simpatico of dreaming vs. time. In other words, Dali claims that time not only ceases to exists, but rather, decays within the realms of sleep and dreaming. The product remaining is the lingering of memories and illusion. Therefore, within the “Persistence of Memory”, Salvador Dali exhibits the harmonistic relationship between the absence of time and the absolute nature of dreaming by unveiling the foil of consciousness vs. unconsciousness and reality vs. imagination.
