Imagination, subconscious and conscious minds are all apart of creating surrealistic art; Surrealism is not just paintings and sculptures it also includes literature. Art from all over was now made to “evoke a response” from the world around them and the war that took it over. Artist like Max Earnest and Salvador Dali were huge influences for this movement and made great contributions through thei r artistic genius and ability to self-analysis and express. “Swans Reflecting Elephants” is an amazing painting created by Salvador Dali and “The Elephants Celebes” by Max Ernest. Looking at this paining is seeming as though you are looking at the backside of an elephant and at the end of the long wrinkled tail there is a woman’s torso with horns attached to what would be the shoulders and coming out the left side of the elephant are two tusk that would be attached to the actual head. But it is also believed that you are looking the head first and at the end of what would be the trunk is the head and that this elephant would in fact be sightless and horns would be the top of the head and the explanation of the tusk on the bottom left side is that the belong to another possible head on the animal. The Elephant Celebes is seen as a college like painting because of the random features of the painting such as the headless torso in the bottom right and the two fish swimming in the sky in the top
Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904, in Figueras, Spain (“Salvador Dali”). He became to be known as the most influential and the most famous painter known in the twentieth century. On January 23, 1989, in Figueras, Spain Dali had died from a cardiac arrest at the age of 84 (“Salvador Dali”). Two of the most famous and memorable artworks located in the Salvador Dali Museum are called The Hallucinogenic Toreador and Lincoln in Dalivision. These two artworks have influenced many new inspiring artists to paint and to express his or her self like the influential Dali himself, in which he has captivated many viewers who had visited the Salvador Dali Museum.
Though the start of artistic expression cannot be pinpointed to a specific date, the growth of art and its complexity cannot be denied. Two complex pieces of art which will be compared and contrasted within this essay are Mary Cassatt’s Portrait of the Artist and Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait with Monkey. Though Cassatt belonged the Impressionist movement (Streissguth 48) and Kahlo who was labeled as a member of the Surrealist movement, which she later denied (Stremmel, Kerstin, & Grosenick 1940), both paintings have an equal number of similarities as contrasting elements.
Surrealism in the 1920s was defined as a fantastic arrangement of materials that influenced Miró, due to the fact that he was one of the most original and sympathetic artists during the Surrealism periods. Miró was born into the Catalan culture in April 20,1893 in Barcelona, Spain (Munro 288). Having to be born into the Catalan culture gave Miró an opportunity to have an intense nationalist activity. In which much attention was paid not only to political expressions of the need for autonomy, but also to the re-Catalanizing of every day life (Higdon 1).
Art is a very important part of humanity’s history, and it can be found anywhere from the walls of caves to the halls of museums. The artists that created these works of art were influenced by a multitude of factors including personal issues, politics, and other art movements. Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh, two wildly popular artists, have left behind artwork, that to this day, influences and fascinates people around the world. Their painting styles and personal lives are vastly different, but both artists managed to capture the emotions that they were feeling and used them to create artwork.
Imagine you can own one of the famous painting in the world. Which one would it be? What will you do with it? If I got to own a famous painting, I would hang it in my bedroom and I’ll show it to my family. In this situation, If needed to narrow it down it will be The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali or Nighthawks by Edward Hopper. These paintings are extremely different, and their artistic movement is opposite from one another. By the end of this essay, you’re going to know the differences and similarities of these paintings.
Dreams. They are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. Dreams don’t just leave the individual once they wake up, rather this is when the have the most impact. Dreams have fascinated artists from early civilizations and still to this day. Salvador Dali’s artwork was influenced significantly by the concept of dreams and the utilization of these concepts and ideas are what made him such an influential artist. The images that fill one’s head while they are asleep have the ability to greatly impact ones’ perception of the physical world. These images fascinated Dali and brought him to create some of the most iconic surrealist
Surrealism, who has not heard this word nowadays? World of the dreams and everything that is irrational, impossible or grotesque, a cultural movement founded immediately after the First World War and still embraced nowadays by many artists. In order to understand it better it is necessary to look deeper into the work of two outstanding artists strongly connected with this movement, and for whom this style was an integral part of their lives.
In the beginning, Surrealism was primarily a literary movement, but it gave artists an access to new subject matter and a process for conjuring it. As Surrealist paintings began to emerge, it divi...
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, Marquis of Dali de Puebol was born on May 11, 1904 in Spain. His father, Salvador Dali y Cusi, was a middle class lawyer and a notary. His father was very strict with raising his children. On the other hand his mother, Felipa Domenech Ferres allowed Salvador more freedom to express himself however he wanted, we can see this in his art and how eccentric he was throughout his life. Salvador was a bright and intelligent child, and often known to have a temper tantrum, his father punished him with beatings along with some of the school bullies. Salvadors father would not tolerate his son’s outburst or wild ways, and he was punished often. Father and son did not have a good relationship and it seemed there was competition between the two for his mother, Felipa attention. Dali had an older brother who was five years old, who died exactly nine months before he was born. His name was Salvador Dali. There were many different stories about how he was named. It is traditional in the Spanish culture that the oldest male takes the father’s name, this is the simple story. The other story was that his father gave him the same name expecting him to be like his dead five year old big brother. Dali later in life told others that his parents took him to his brothers grave and told him that he was a reincarnation of his older deceased brother. Dali said “we resemble each other like two drops of water, but we had different reflections. He was probably a first version of myself, but conceived too much in the absolute”. Being a child and trying to comprehend that your parents are comparing you to a sibling that has past is difficult but the fact that Salvador had to visit the grave in incomprehensible.
The use of symbols in surrealism and the meaning within these paintings by Max Ernst played a significant influence on the notion of my experimental art making. He was a German painter, sculptor and a graphic artist but also considered as one of the primary pioneers of the Dada and Surrealism movement. They aimed to revolt against everyday reality by exploring the construction of the unconscious mind. By exploring the mind and transforming reality by surveying the desires of the human nature, it allows one to contemplate on the actuality and the realities of our world. Uniquely, Ernst created his own set of techniques such as collage, frottage, grattage, decalcomania and oscillation in order to convey his symbolism of his art making – but it also later incentivized artists such as Jackson Pollock and William De Kooning, revealing his such influence and impact in the art world.

Along with George Braque, Picasso was responsible for the invention of cubism. Cubism is one of the most radical restructuring of the way that a work of art constructs its meaning. Cubism is a term that was derived from a reference made to geometric schemes and cubes. Cubism has been known as the first and the most influential of all movements in twentieth century art . Before Picasso did any cubism paintings, there were works exibititing a raw intensity and violence due to his reading of non western art aligned with European primitivism. This contrasting position provided the dynamic for Picasso’s work. In his paintings such as Mother and Child, Picasso showed the fetishistic and simplifying aspects of primitivism. In his paintings Picasso used bright hues and subdued grays and earth colors. Picasso found out that shapes could have meaning and identities by their arrangement .
many awards and became very successful in his work as an artist. During his childhood and thereafter, during the Depression, Salvador Dali's artwork and personality were influenced by many different people and entities.
The artist of the Surrealist movement strives to take everyday objects or thoughts and turn them into dream-like, unrealistic paintings. Salvador Dali and Vladimir Kush are two great Surrealist painters. Dali and Kush created many different paintings, but they did create similar paintings such as: Dali’s The Ship with Butterfly Sails and Kush’s Fauna in La Mancha. The best of the two surrealist paintings has yet to be named.
Surrealism and the surrealist movement is a ‘cultural’ movement that began around 1920’s, and is best known for its visual art works and writings. According to André Berton, the aim was “to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality” (Breton 1969:14). Surrealists incorporated “elements of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ‘non sequitur”. Hence, creating unnerving, illogical paintings with photographic precision, which created strange creatures or settings from everyday real objects and developed advanced painting techniques, which allowed the unconscious to be expressed by the self (Martin 1987:26; Pass 2011:30).
