Analysis: Les Noces De Pierrette

The painting I have decided to write about is called Les Noces de Pierrette, created by the Spanish painter and sculptor, Pablo Picasso. It was created in 1905 and there are six figures included in a very dark area. I believe that this painting was created to provoke emotion and deep thinking from the viewer. Just at first glance, there is a feeling of sadness and loneliness, and it immediately makes me wonder why Picasso would choose to portray something containing so much negativity. One of the most common elements of art is color when being used in artwork because it is very expressive. The colors used in this painting are one of the first details I noticed because it is so dark and doesn’t vary a lot. There is a lot of blue, black, grey, and white, and the difference in dark and light hues gives a very dramatic contrast. But aside from that, the many different shades of blue he uses, varying from light to dark, helps to portray the gloomy mood. Not only that, but the eyes on the figures painted black. Five of the six figures are very light, almost ghostlike, while only one is dark. Although the dark figure is different from the rest, it did not strike me as the focus of the entire painting. Since I don’t see an obvious detail that would make it easy to figure out what the painting is about, I have to look deeper into the artwork and really think about what Picasso is trying to say and express. Once I carefully examined it, I notice that all of the figures, including the dark one, are all looking in the direction of the light figure all the way to the right, and their eyes look empty, also giving off the sense that the time is lonely. While I still don’t know exactly why they are all staring at this one particular figure, I understand what the focus
