Although the biggest drug lord has been captured, the crime and violence left behind cannot be forgotten.
Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927 in a small town near Yuma, Arizona near the border. Born into a poor family, Cesar grew up in Arizona and in a small adobe home along with his parents (United Farm Workers 1). Mexico has been fighting drug cartels and their violence since December of 2006, since then, the activity between these organizations and crimes have been on the rise. In Mexico, over 70,000 people have lost their lives in crimes and violence associated with the leading cartels of Mexico. These leading cartels include: The Beltran Leyva, Gulf Cartel, Juarez Cartel, La Familia Michoacana, Los Zetas and the Tijuana/Arellano Felix Cartel. One of the most important effects of these cartels is in the social life of the citizens. Most of the citizens are terrified of these cartels, to the point where streets seem vacant because the people are too scared to roam the streets. These cartels impose fear with acts such as that of September 15, 2008, when grenades were thrown into crowds in Morelia town square in an independence day celebration killing eight people. He and Carlos Lehder worked together to develop a new island trans-shipment point in the Bahamas, called Norman's Cay. Carlos and Robert Vesco purchased most of the land on the island, which included a 3,300 foot airstrip, a harbor, hotel, houses, boats, aircraft and even built a refrigerated warehouse to store the cocaine. From 1978 to 1982, this was used as a central smuggling route for the Medellín Cartel. (According to his brother's account, Pablo did not purchase Norman's Cay. It was, instead, a sole venture of Carlos Lehder.) Escobar was able to purchase the 7.7 square miles (20 km2) of land, which included Hacienda Napoles, for several million dollars. He created a zoo, a lake and other diversions for his family and organization.[11] At one point, it was estimated that seventy to eighty tons of cocaine were being shipped from Colombia to the U.S. every month. At the peak of his power in the mid-1980s, he was shipping as much as eleven tons per flight in jetliners to the United States (the biggest load shipped by Pablo was 23,000 kg mixed with fish paste and shipped via boat, as confirmed by his brother in the book Escobar). In addition to using the planes, Pablo's brother, Roberto Escobar, said he also used two small remote-controlled submarines to transport the massive loads (these subs were, in fact, manned and this is again documented in Roberto's
Pablo Escobar, also known as “The King of Cocaine”, was a notorious Colombian drug lord, who at the height of his career supplied about 80% of the cocaine, which was smuggled into the U.S. (Wikipedia web). In the 1970’s, Pablo Escobar rose to power when began to take control over drug trafficking and the selling of cocaine. He was known to be a very violent and ruthless person, who showed no mercy that did not follow his simple commands. He became wealthy because no one stood in his way,
Pablo once told his mother that he wanted to be "big" someday but I don't think this was what she had in mind. Pablo started out making money by sneaking into grave yards at night and stealing the tombstones from the deceased he would then sand blast the engraving off of the tombstone and sell them as new grave markers to the Panamanians. By age twenty Pablo was also an accomplished car thief. His small time crimes would never amount to what he was going to become. His reputation grew after a well known Medellin drug dealer named Fabio Restrepo was murdered in 1975 ostensibly by Escobar, all of Restrepo's men were informed that they now worked for Pablo.. It was here that he began his pattern of dealing with the authorities by either bribing them or killing them.
Kyra Gurney is an Education Reporter for the Miami Herald Media Company. She graduated from Columbia University and has a Master of Science in Journalism. She was also a reporter and assistant editor for Insight Crime, as well as an Editorial Intern for The City Paper Bogota; reported Colombian politics, current events, etc. This source caught my eye when I expanded my research on Kyra Gurney, it showed there was plenty of information not just on the one topic I wanted to look more into specifically but it brought me more information than I needed. Kyra Gurney writes about “Top 10 Tales from Pablo Escobar’s Son’s Book”. It discusses everything he did as a young man starting off in the right direction, which soon turned around. He then started up in
Pablo Escobar is personally responsible for the killing of approximately 3,000 people in his lifetime. The killings were ruthless and unjust and were meant to frighten anyone who may oppose him. He generally killed to get ahead in the drug business and most reported killings were between rival drug kingpins. Escobar brought in more than two billion dollars illegally a year and probably could have made more if he did not run for a spot in the Colombian Government. Pablo Escobar was elected into the Colombian Government but was soon removed due to a Colombian Government official finding out he was a Drug Kingpin, and he paid off almost every official to get a spot in the Senate.
On December 1st, 1949, one of the most dangerous, frightening, wealthiest drug lords was born in Colombia; his name, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria. This drug lord wasn’t just any regular drug dealer. He killed anyone who interfered with his business. He was the head mastermind behind the Medellin Cartel, where he made tons of cocaine daily. This man seems like he would be a terrible person, however he did somethings to benefit the poor(1,Macias,Amanda). At his home in Puerto Triunfu, Escobar built a zoo filled with different animals such as hippos, giraffes, elephants, zebras, and even cheetahs! It is said that hippos still roam the grounds of his home today (4, Picone,Kiri). Pablo Escobar was one
