Chapter 1 essay In this essay i will talk about the different X-RAYs and scans many doctors use today to diagnose patients over the years. Through todays technology we are able to look at the many different reasons why we use the types of tests to properly diagnose patients.
The first scan is a CT scan, which is “A computerized tomography scan”. It combines a series of X-Ray images taken from different angles and uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images or slices of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissue in the body. A CT scan provides more information then a regular X-Ray would. This scan is typically used when you need more information then what the typical X-Ray provides.

It typically uses radio active drug/tracer to show this activity. The tracer is typically injected, swallowed, or inhaled depending on which organ(s) is being studied by the PET scan. PET scans are used when revealing or evaluating several conditions which include: cancers, heart diseases and brain cancers. PET scans provide information different from that uncovered by other types of scans. Cancer shows up as bright spots on PET scans, because they have a higher metabolic rate than normal cells. The only health risk associated with this particular scan is related to the tracer. It may cause a major allergic reaction, which is rare in many cases. X-Rays are beamed pass your body and then they are absorbed in different amounts depending on the density of the materials they pass through. X-Rays are used to see broken bones, metal plates that may have been placed or screws in a previous surgery, Arthritis ( shows your joints which can show evidence of arthritis). Dental decay is another common reason dentists use X-Rays to check if there are any cavities in the teeth. Osteoporosis, certain types of X-Ray tests can measure your bone density. Bone cancer, bone tumors can also be reveled in X-Rays. X-Rays can also be used to see the parts of the chest and abdomen for various reasons. Major risks involved in X-Rays is the amount of exposure of radiation you intake, though it is very minimal. Sensitivity to radiation depends on the age of the patient. Another factor in risks for X-Rays would be in some cases you are asked to swallow a tracer, or are injected with one. In rare cases some patients have allergic reactions, feel dizzy or warm, it has a metallic taste, lightheadedness, nausea, itching, and hives. In the radiology profession first you must write the patient’s file. This includes information about insurance, medical history, what the required x-ray is for and where it is going to be taken on the body. Writing in this way is similar to writing a small research paper. You must do research on the patients and there history and what insurance they have. Writing the report is important because the information must be accurate so the patient can be helped as much as possible. If the information about medical history is incorrect it can cause a huge problem for the patient. For example, if the patient is claustrophobic they would need to get an open room x-ray where the patient isn’t in an enclosed tube so they don’t have a panic attack and potentially injure themselves and others. In dentistry there is a need for taking an x-ray, the x-ray is a way to help the dentist diagnose a patients oral hygiene and to see if there are any other areas in the mouth that may need to have any type of work. The dentist or the assistant will want to make sure that they can get all the teeth possible in the radiograph (x-ray) as possible to reduce the amount of exposure to the patient. Most people will have exposure to radiation just from standing outside in the sun for a long period of time, which is what we call “background exposure”.

One might ask, what is Spectral Computed Tomography (CT)? Spectral CT is a way for us as health professionals to add diagnostic value to our exams by using the full spectrum of an x-ray beam. To summarize, “Spectral CT acquires data sets at both low- and high-kVp settings” (Lentz 2014). Spectral CT was first studied back in the 1980’s, but Stefan Ulzheimer, PhD, said, “Because of various hurdles, it never made it into clinical practice” (Lentz 2014). John W. Steidley, PhD, states in his article Exploring the Spectrum, “While these exercises were of academic interest, CT detector technology at the time wasn’t yet advanced enough to separate the x-ray beam into its component spectrum” (Steidley 2008).
The description of PET scans in detail requires the understanding of the radioactive substance injected into the subject. First, a small amount of a biochemical substance is tagged with a positron-emitting radioisotope. A positron is an “anti-electron.” Positrons are given off during the decay of the nuclei of the radioisotope. When the positron emitted collides with an electron in the tissue of the subject, both the positron and the electron are annihilated. When this happens, the collision produces two gamma rays having the same energy (511 KeV), but going in opposite directions.

CTscans stands for “Computed Tomography”. It is a way of looking inside your body using a special camera. It is an advanced scanning x-ray and computer system that makes detailed pictures of horizontal cross-sections of the body, or the part of the body that is x-rayed. A CT scan is a diagnostic test that combines the use of x-ray with computer technology. A series of x-beams from many different angles are used to get these cross-sectional images of the patient’s body. In a computer, these pictures are assembled into a 3-dimentianal picture that can display organs, tissues, bones, and any such thing. It can even show ducts, blood vessels and tumors. One of the advantages of CT is that it clearly shows soft tissue structures (such as brain), as well as dense tissue structure (such as bone). The pictures of a Ctscanner are a lot more detailed than the pictures of a regular X-ray machine. It can make pictures of areas protected or surrounded by bones, which a regular X-ray machine can not. Because of this, a CT scanner is said to be 100 times as affective and clever as an ordinary X-ray, and can therefore diagnose some diseases a lot earlier and quicker. It is recent technology that has made it possible to accurately scan objects into a computer in three dimensions, even though the machines and ideas were developed in the 1970s. In the 70s doctors started to use this new type of machine that could give detailed pictures of organs that the older type of x-ray, machine could not give.
I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. Radiologic technologists are expected to give efficient patient care while following the doctor’s order to proceed with the X-ray examination. Radiology is the most important role in healthcare because with out having X-rays, the surgeons could not see inside of the patient’s body to perform surgery.
