My Career Path
I am attending Baton Rouge General School of Radiologic Technology to pursue an Associates degree through Northwestern State University to become a licensed radiologic technologist. I chose this profession because I thoroughly enjoy helping others and making a difference in people’s lives. Radiologic technologists are expected to give efficient patient care while following the doctor’s order to proceed with the X-ray examination. Radiology is the most important role in healthcare because with out having X-rays, the surgeons could not see inside of the patient’s body to perform surgery. Doctors can not predict what is going on inside of a patient without having an X-ray. I am interested in this being my future career because

it is a good work-life balance and has solid prospects to improve. You can get promoted to earn higher salary and the satisfaction is rated in terms of upward mobility and stress level flexibility. Many radiologic technologists earn a two year associates degree or a four year bachelors degree.
There used to be training programs that range from six months to two years in duration and result in a certificate upon successful completion. Course work will include anatomy, patient positioning, radiation safety, and basic patient care. Now, beginning in January 2015, there is a requirement for every one to pursue a career in Radiology to have a license before they can even get a job as a radiologic technologist. There is an exam after you complete your two-year schooling in a radiology school that you must take to obtain your licensure. This exam is called the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. You must complete this within a certain amount of time after your graduation date from the facility you earned your degree from to receive a license while earning your required continuing education credits to work in the …show more content…
field. There is a professional organization that is connected strongly with being a radiologic technologist here in Louisiana and that is the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists. You can at any time maintain a membership with the LSRT but there are some classifications to maintain this membership. There are being an active member, associate member, emeritus member, life member, student member, or an honorary member. There is always an opportunity for any one going to school to be a radiologic technologist or if you already are a radiologic technologist to be apart of this society. There are continuing education requirements that you must do every other year with the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists. According to a website called The American Registry for Radiologic Technologists, it states that the continuing education requirements for radiologic technologists is 24 credits regardless of the number of ARRT certifications and registrations an individual holds. There are different ways to obtain these hours and one way is to attend LSRT meetings held twice a year with different meetings you attend and turn in your continuing education cards to the ticket collected after attending each meeting held at the facilities. Another way to earn these credits are simply by doing them online and taking tests afterwards to make sure you have read and followed the courses online. According to an article called Radiology Careers and Career Outlook, there is an expectancy of 17,200 new jobs available in the radiology field between 2014 and 2024. The median salary for a radiologic technologist was $55,970 in 2014. The highest paid employee earned $80,080, while the lowest paid earned $37,610. The field is expected to grow faster than average for all occupations. There is clearly reasoning behind the field growing so much and that is because of the numerous different categories you can go into after you are certified or licensed. There is MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Nuclear Medicine, PET, and so much more. After learning about all of the different modalities and directions I could take with my education, I could really see myself being in CT after I graduate. I was a radiologic technologist assistant (RTA) in CT at Our Lady of the Lake hospital for about 6 months before starting BRGSORT and I loved it! CT is an imaging procedure that uses special x-ray equipment to provide detailed images of internal organs, blood vessels, soft tissues and bones. According to market research, the global computed tomography market was valued at $4,894.3 million in 2015, and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% during 2016-2022. Based on slice type, the high slice type segment is expected to witness the faster growth of 5.3% during the forecast period. The global CT market is growing significantly due to increasing healthcare expenditure and growing geriatric population. The increase of chronic diseases and improving healthcare infrastructure in developing countries are also during the growth of the global CT market. The requirements to be a certified CT technologist are to meet the education and ethics requirements and pass the ARRT’S Computed Tomography examination.
After doing so, you will be considered a certified and registered CT technologist. You are in charge of getting together all books and materials needed to review for the registry exam. The ARRT will not provide any of this for you. The time it will take to become certified will all depend on you and how soon you want it. I could start studying for it now so when I graduate I can have my application submitted to take the registry right
away. I really enjoy my schooling thus far in this profession. I have learned a lot about patient care and the safety precautions of radiation and how to position patients. It is very important to keep in mind the importance of radiation protection and not only keeping your patient safe, but keeping yourself safe as a radiologic technologist. Many people think our job is simple as pushing a button, but there is a lot more to being a radiologic technologist that nobody understands. I am glad I am exploring the opportunity to see what it really is like behind the lead walls and understand the importance of what really goes on in radiology.
As an ultrasound technician/sonographer I will have the ability to see dangerous defects within the human anatomy and begin a lifelong profession with many benefits. The Ultrasound was first invented in the early 1900’s and was surprisingly not used to produce photos of a fetus. In 1917 Paul Langen a marine life scientist used a form of ultrasound equipment in his attempt to detect submarines. After many failed attempts at using high frequency sound waves Dr. Ian Donald and his team in Glasgow, Scotland invented the first ultrasound machine in 1957. Dr. Donald even tested his machine on patients within a year of completing the invention, by the late 1950’s ultrasounds became routine in Glasgow hospitals.
The kind of schooling you will need to become a certified ultrasound technician will vary based on your current status in the world of medicine. You will definitely need a high school diploma or a GED before you decide to venture off into training for a sonography certificate. If you have at least that much schooling under your belt, you have three options.
They spend much of the typical day on their feet and with constant walking. Techs also commonly have to lift or move the imaging equipment themselves or with other people.Ultrasound technicians spend a lot of time on their feet and on the move. After being trained in diagnostic medical sonography , sonographers typically receive specialized training in gynecological sonography while on the job. However, most schools offer obstetrics/gynecological classes in their diagnostic medical sonography programs.2-year and 4-year programs consist of classroom coursework and clinical training. Associate degree program graduates are eligible for entry-level work in sonography while graduates with a bachelor's degree are eligible for professional registration, which may result in higher paying positions and increased job responsibilities. employers may prefer technicians who have received professional registration and
In order to become an ultrasound technician you need to advance your schooling beyond high school. It really just depends on what you are willing to do. You can go to college anywhere from 1 to 4 years and beyond. 1-2 years would be your associates. Which is the bare minimum. 3-4 years would be your bachelors. Often times people with higher degree levels will also get paid a higher salary than those who are just working with the bare minimum. The more after graduate schooling you take the higher the rate of pay will be. In high school to get yourself prepared for what is going to be taught in college most students would recommend you take as many years of science that they offer. The main unit of study is going to have to revolve around science and
Scientifically-oriented courses, such as physics, biology and math. After high school, it requires an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree. While gaining your degree, you need certain coursework, some classes taken could be: Abdominal and obstetrical sonography, Human anatomy, Medical terminology, Microbiology, Professional ethics, Ultrasound physics, and vascular technology. Tasks performed by an ultrasound technician include: Preparing patients for the ultrasound exam and explaining the procedure, gathering patient histories, using ultrasound equipment to scan the area of the body, analyzing ultrasound data, save ultrasound images on a computer, and provide an oral or written summary of the findings to the physician. Ultrasound procedures can examine various structures of the body, including the abdomen, heart, and female reproductive system. Different parts of the body require different techniques, so there are several major specializations that a sonographer can choose: Abdomen & Breast, Fetal, Neurosonology, Vascular Technology,
Attending Florida Southwestern State College to become an x-ray tech is a huge accomplish for me. Because I have a learning disability unfortunately I have to take remedial courses like intermediate algebra, Brush up English, and a reading course the first semester. The good thing about studying Radiology is you can switch to any type of jobs in this field. For an example, you can switch to working with MRI’s or Cat Scans if you want to try another department in the Radiology field. This specific field is for you to work with x-rays. It’s important to know the bone structure .You can work with ultrasounds to, Cat Scans, to MRI’s (Magnetic resonance imaging).

The career that I chose for a possible advancement beyond a staff radiation therapist was radiation oncology supervisor. Overall the main day to day duties of a radiation oncology supervision is to make sure the department is running smoothly by making sure their staff are appropriately completing their duties. They do this by making sure the staff are sticking to the standards and ethics implemented by their profession and the hospital.1 As part of their job it is their duty to hire employees and makes sure those employees are trained to provide good care to cancer patients.1 They have many administrative day to day duties like planning budgets, developing policies, identifying problems within the department and developing solutions.1 The

I was under the assumption that Radiology was primarily X-ray. I couldn’t be more wrong! The RT 100 course, does an outstanding job helping students understand all that is involved within the department. Exploring modalities, equipment, expectations, and organizations, gave us, the students, plenty to contemplate. Material presented, gave me a firm foundation on what I will need to consider, assuming this will be the field of science I choose to pursue. I also feel that if I continue, there will be no surprises on what is expected of me because practically every detail is discussed within the
