The character Pearl in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is the most ambiguous character in the novel. Pearl plays an important role as the daughter of Hester Prynne, who commits the sin of adultery. During this time of Puritan law, Hester was punished by having to wear the scarlet letter “A” on her chest to remind the world of her sin which was committing adultery. Even the Bible states that sin is wrong, “For the wages of sin is death:” (The Bible). Pearl was born and considered an outcast because of the sinful deed of her mother. Pearl is the living evidence of Hester’s adultery with an unknown man. Pearl makes the letter “A” and puts it over her heart where her mother wears her scarlet letter. Hester asked her if she knew why she wore the letter A and what it means. “Pearl told her that she did and that it was the same reason the minister put his hands over his heart”. (The Scarlet Letter, 548) Pearl from the very beginning knew the scarlet letter “A” her mother wore mint something and she was very observant to notice that the mister held his own heart in the same manner. In the novel when Pearl was ask who she is, she stated that she is her mother’s child. Pearl is being truthful telling that her mother is all she has known to take care of her. Pearl being born allowed Hester the strength to become someone in society for the both of them. Pearls search for truth and honesty lead the reader’s to the truth of who her father was. In the end of the novel when Pearl is crying over her dying father, Author Dimmesdale, she is then allowed to become a person with different meaning in her own life. Pearl is no longer the product of sin, but she is a young lady with a bright future ahead of her.
