Through out the guest talk, I have had better knowledge on the current practice, future goal and the operation of Oxfam. I was also better informed on how business cooperation can contribute in minimize inequality instead of worsening the current situation.
Oxfam had been working on development programs, advocating equality, human and disaster management and global citizen education. On the local level, Oxfam places it’s concern in corporate social responsibility, poverty in workers, women, elderly, ethnic minority, and all kinds of inequality. On the global level, Oxfam work on advocating fair trade, global poverty and inequality, climate change, and also corporate social responsibility.

For instance, girls are expected to out perform boys academically, but were rarely seen in male-dominated career such as engineering. Women also face high expectations in maintaining housework and their own career at the same time. Yet, I think Oxfam can also work on solving the root and promote gender inequality in working environment at the same time. In my opinion, Oxfam could joint-hand with book publisher and redesign educational materials, sending messages on guiding children to rethink the role of different gender in the society, encourage them to go for their dream regardless of the social perspectives and so on. Oxfam can also consider working with the Hong Kong government in launching advertisement and competitions for high school and college students to join in making videos in regard to gender equality promotion. Besides, Oxfam could also promote gender equality in workplace to Business Corporation. For instance, Oxfam can give out talks in different companies in promoting gender equality, stating the importance and benefits of having an equal working environment. Companies itself could also organize workshop in spreading the message of workplace equality regardless of gender and race. I have once worked part-time as a sales associate in an American chain store and I was requested to participate in a 5-10 minute workshop every time before work. One of the topics is about gender and race equality at work and our manager would give us suggestions on how to make each other feel included regardless of sex and race. Young children are typically raised around specific sex-types objects and activities. This includes the toys that that are given, activities that they are encouraged to participate in, and the gender-based roles that they are subjected to from a young age. Parents are more likely to introduce their daughters into the world of femininity through an abundance of pink colored clothes and objects, Barbie dolls, and domestic chores such as cooking and doing laundry (Witt par. 9). Contrarily, boys are typically exposed to the male world through action figures, sports, the color blue, and maintenance-based chores such as mowing the lawn and repairing various things around the house (Witt par. 9). As a result, young children begin to link different occupations with a certain gender thus narrowing their decisions relating to their career goals in the future. Just as in the past, feminism continues to act as a controversial issue among men and women. In the 1960’s, women finally addressed workplace inequity and created woman organizations to achieve equality. In the early 1960’s, the Equal Pay Act and the Civil Rights Act set a milestone for women’s progression towards work equality. Though women have made great leaps towards true equality, women still face many challenges and continue to be categorized as the subservient gender.
Gender roles are often used in our own society to tie people to a certain representation for what is socially acceptable. These roles perpetuate gender inequalities because they often make the female end of the spectrum worth less than the male. One example is equating masculinity with strength and femininity with weakness. Because of this sayings such as “You run like a girl” become negative. Gender roles create a system where people are set to a different standard based off gender alone. In trying to follow what is socially acceptable based on gender people are forced into roles. There is a lower percentage of women in science than men because girls are taught at a young age that being smart isn’t feminine. As time allowed more men and more women to be schooled together, it was evident that a woman's presence alone would not ensure an equally beneficial education. The school systems continue to follow a gendered curriculum, created mainly by men in order to serve men. It is the reinforcement of the gender biases and assumptions through their methodical distribution and teaching of stereotypes and ideas that put the education of men and women on two separate levels. There is no example to follow when it comes to the equal education of children because even though they receive the same education, it is far from equal. It is this along with the lack of recognition towards women who have achieved greatness both in and out of education that creates an outsider status for the female student (Lasser, 1987).

Females are targeted in a negative way when it comes to gender roles. Literature helps view and understand major problems that happen in society. Gender roles is one problem in society today and it has been for a long time. Gender roles are what people think a specific gender has to do in society. For example a man is suppose to work and a woman is suppose to stay at home taking care of the children and clean the house and cook. All these stereotypes are negative in many ways. It separates both genders and views men superior than women. These gender roles are bad when it comes to women. It brings them problems in society and problems mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Gender roles are unavoidable at any stage of your life. They are taught to you by parents, conveyed in the media, practiced and honored in organizations and supported by our government. No matter how many feminist groups attempt to bring the two sets of gender roles for males and females together, there will always be the unwritten expectations that males and females are taught. Boys will always play with guns and girls will always play with dolls. As long as this occurs, the ambitions for boys and girls will be directly related to the stereotypical form we are taught. It is up to the families, media and peers to use the gender roles appropriately.

For example, at my high school there are auto tech programs and a CISCO program. There are very few females who join these programs and sometimes no females at all. They get discouraged by the amount of males in the program and people asking them “Are you sure you want to do this program?” which makes them feel as though they do not belong. Society does not support women if women choose to take on a more “manly” career. When females do get accepted into these program everyone is in awe. One of the main issues today 's students face is the act of being given gender roles and experiencing gender bias. To further explain, "Society treats boys and girls differently and expects them to develop different gender-role identities" (87). Throughout the gender section of the book, there are several examples given on how boys and girls are divided and given gender specific roles. For instance, girls are told that “Women aren’t good at math” and boys are told “Men don’t make good nurses” (87). These stereotypes affect the thinking of the students and later become obstacles when deciding careers. One way I would promote gender equality as a teacher is by completely eliminating the use of stereotypes in my classroom. This change will be accomplished by doing group activities and assignments in the classroom which avoid gender bias. It is important for students to have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals and follow their dreams. Mistreatment of women in the workforce has been an ongoing issue ever since women have been introduced into the work environment. While some issues are specific to certain workplaces, others are issues that are continuously noticed almost everywhere. Everybody is born and made differently, but one thing is similar, our gender. We are born either male or female, and in society everybody judges us for our gender. This is called gender roles; societies expecting you to act like a male or female (Rathus, 2010). Some people say, “act like a lady,” or “be a man,” these are examples of how gender roles work in our everyday lives. In society when we think stereotypes, what do we think? Many think of jocks, nerds, or popular kids; gender stereotyping is very similar. Gender stereotypes are thoughts of what the gender is supposed to behave like (Rathus, 2010). One example of a gender stereotype for a man would be a worker for the family, and a women stereotype would be a stay at home mom. Though in todays age we don’t see this as much, but it is still around us. In different situations both gender roles and stereotypes are said and done on a daily basis and we can’t avoid them because everyone is different.
Girls are seen as caring, nurturing, quiet, and helpful. They place other’s needs above their own. Girls get ahead by hard work, not by being naturally gifted. Boys are seen as lazy, but girls are seen as not capable. In class, teacher will call on boys more than they call on girls. Boys are seen as better at math and science; while girls are better at reading and art. This bias is still at work even out of the classroom. There are more males employed at computer firms than women. The ratio of male to female workers in STEM fields is 3-1. In college, more women major in the humanities than in the sciences. In education, women are often seen as lesser than; even though 65% of all college degrees are earned by women. This becomes a major problem when it comes to occupation. Theres is a phenomenon around the world known as occupational isolation, which is the segregation of jobs due to gender. Often, there are occupation which are target the male gender and others the female gender. Female are not considered for male jobs, such as prosecutors or front-line police officer. Women compete for jobs that pay less than their male counterparts. The perception is that a woman’s best occupation is being a housewife, and there is a generalization that her attitude at home will transfer to her work place. This is why women are being paid lower rates while men fight over high income jobs. Gender stereotypes are very prevalent in today’s early childhood classrooms with societal expectations playing a significant role in generating the negative outcomes of both sexes (National Union of Teachers, 2013, p. 4). These societal expectations perpetuate inequality and become apparent through various interactions, messages and materials as well as through professional documentation such as the Australian Curriculum or the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) (Siraj-Blatchford, 2004, p, 22).
