Blast Beats and Breakdowns
Music is an excellent way for everyone to connect and get along, Music is also an important part in everyone’s life. There are many different genres in music, including country, rap, reggae, metal, rock, and many more. This essay will focus on a certain genre, metalcore. Metalcore is a blend of hardcore punk and extreme metal, and has a distinguished use of breakdowns, which are slow, intense passages that are conducive to moshing. Pioneering bands in metalcore such as Hogan’s Heroes, Earth Crisis, and Integrity are described to lean more towards hardcore punk, whereas later bands, like Asking Alexandria, All That Remains, and The Devil Wears Prada are described as leaning more towards metal. The band Sepultura has been credited as the band that helped lay the groundwork for the metalcore genre in the early 2000’s, and Pantera is said to have directly influenced Atreyu, Bleeding through, and Unearth, While also being very influential in the early 2000’s.
Metalcore is described as having a complex history but mainly comes from thrash metal, hardcore punk, and extreme metal. Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal that is characterized most typically by its fast tempo and aggression. Thrash metal songs typically use percussive beats and fast, low-register guitar riffs overlaid with shredding-style lead work. The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late nineteen seventies and early nineteen eighties when a number of predominately american bands began fusing elements of new wave British heavy metal with the speed and aggression of hardcore punk. A note worth mentioning is that thrash metal is widely regarded as having a “Big four” group of bands, being the most successful and influenti...

While Metalcore is not a genre that everyone is fond of, the genre has found a sizeable foothold, not only in North America, but around the world, and every day the genre increases in popularity and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

In the music video titled “Numb,” directed by Joseph Hahn and sung by Linkin Park, a message of rebellion persuades a push for independence. Produced in 2003, the music video introduced a young girl who feels that she doesn’t fit in with everyone and is in an autopilot state to do what her mother thinks is right for her. The video alludes to her wanting to stand up to the pressure and fulfill her dreams of pursuing art. A dark theme towers over the music video to show that she is not happy and is trapped by her mother. This genre, alternative metal, voices rebellious young adults to take a stand and to get away from the pressures of life.

Two years in the making, countless hours of songwriting, guitar tracking, recording, then multiple lawsuits by record companies and the end result is the masterpiece that is A Day To Remember’s Common Courtesy album. To most people, the entire genre of metal, hardcore, or punk music is all just one big idea of devil worshipping and ignorance, these misconceptions are so false it’s almost unfair. The detail and progression of the music in these genres is so advanced that it is devastating to musicians that most people don’t consider it music. A Day To Remember is the pinnacle of what melodic hardcore, or “pop-mosh” music is, they are the best musicians and make the biggest impact on the scene and the world. In a world that only focuses on what Miley Cyrus is doing and in a genre that is mainly only heard by angry heartbroken teenagers, ADTR has been able to solidify themselves into the musical world and that is what makes their new album “Common Courtesy” an iconic part of hardcore music.
Throughout history, music has been the artistic stage of philosphoical output of both ideas, emotions and stories, enducing emotional and cogitational responses from the audience, through it’s representation of ideas and through ‘words in music’. Victor Hugo says- “Music expresses…. that which cannot remain silent” (26 February 1802 – 22 May 1885), and is a predominant feature in the early 1990s ‘Riot Grrrl’ movement, in which female-empowerment bands would address modern issues of sexual abuse, racism, and the patriarchy through their underground, punk rock music.
Heavy metal is an amazing thing that took its unique and amazing sounds to new heights. Unfortunately due to highly commercialized excess driven hair bands the genre was sent in to another decline where the music would be reabsorbed into new genres. By around 1990 most heavy metal had evolved into other rock genres like hard rock, grunge, gothic rock, gothic metal, thrash metal, speed metal, doom metal, and nu metal.
...le genres of music have been accused of selling out during the 80's Heavy Metal and Glam Rock were fused by bands such as Motley Crue and Poison to make Glam Metal which hardcore metal fans hated as it was not deemed authentic due to its over the top and feminine feel.

Heavy metal music has developed greatly ever since it was created in the late 1960’s, evolving into large and varied categories of subgenres. It is not uncommon for types of metal to be confused for one another despite their distinct differences. There are hundreds of subgenres, but three of them will be discussed, the bluesy and distorted doom metal, the fast and fantastical power metal, and the ill reputed black metal.
My favorite music genre is Alternative Rock, a subgenre of rock music characterized by its non-mainstream sound and experimental approach. “Alternative Rock Music has been called a hybrid sound because it is a blend of many different elements from a variety of different elements from a variety of different genre such as blues, pop, country, folk, and more, to create something new.’ The genre has been defined as a mixed bag of cutting-edge indie rockers and classic stadium arena artists. It was typified by the band’s rejection of commercialism and difficulty fitting into a particular genre. Alternative Rock bands were largely under-represented on radio and television.
Crystal Castles are a goth-rave and electro-thrash duo from Toronto, Ontario made up of Ethan Kath (on synth) and Alice Glass (on vocals). The duo brings a destructive and devouring abyss of pain, regret, nihilism and noise to synth pop music. In this paper, through a focused analysis of its lyrics, its musical elements, as well as its accompanying video, I will argue that Crystal Castles’ 2010 song “Baptism” creates a nuanced musical space in which dark emotions such as revenge are juxtaposed with a bright, digital and danceable beat. Although, Alice Glass’ voice is heavily distorted and almost inaudible, I propose that the band’s decision to distort Alice’s voice aids in evoking a drowning feeling which matches the lyrics’ theme. The drowning out of Alice’s voice through electronic distortion, recalls moments of metaphorical drowning and emotional chaos that so often accompany betrayal, horror, violence and desolation.
Rock music is a term that should be familiar. Originally dubbed “rock and roll” in the 1940’s and 1950’s, rock and roll is almost always fronted by an electrical guitar and heavily influenced by blues, R&B, and even country music. By the late 1960’s and early 1970’s rock and roll began to be shortened to just “rock music”, and the entire style starting branching out into other sub-genres such as punk rock, heavy metal, garage rock, hard rock, among others. The sub-genre in question however is Alternative Rock, which is generally defined as despite following the fundamentals of rock music, it strays away from what is considered “mainstream” at the time by using concepts such as extensive underground music association, muddied or distorted guitars, more prominent use of power chords, and even a sort of rebellious or defiant attitude in lyrics and sound.
Being on the cutting edge of bizarre, alternative music is an elite privilege, complete with buzz words to exclude the mainstream. The music makes or breaks the scene. One rave deejay explains to Rosen and Flick (1992), "A great rave or techno record is like a religious experience. A bad one will give you a headache
Rock music has been commonly linked with violence, rebellion, hysteria, distortion, sex, and more negative characteristics. According to Cotaga (2011), Rock'n'Roll groups are thought to be constantly intoxicated or affected by substances and steady gathering individuals encompassed by young
In rock music its target audience is the youth. And by youth I am not referring to teenagers, but instead to the mentality of youth, the adults and teens still in the sociological stage between being a ‘kid’ and accepting the responsibilities of ‘adulthood’ [Weinstein pg6] These youth negotiate the genre and change it to their liking. For example both males and females have different subgenres of rock targeted specifically at them. Males are seen from a young age as being naughty and rowdy, not very responsible and thus given more freedom. While girls are seen as quiet and polite, with very low aggression. These traits have reflected in the genres that are targeted at the two genders. Males were targeted with Heavy Metal as it expressed the qualities the very qualities they will have to give up in order to become adults and how they will lose their freedom. While for females rock music is soft and romantic, females will typically grow up faster than males and leave youth behind in order to take up responsibilities. An example of how the music was negotiated to fit the two genders is seem in the 1960s when performers such as Carole king and James Taylor transformed themes of protest into sentimental commentaries, romance and illusions of youth. [Weinstein pg 12-13] While heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath sung about politicians and how disgusting they are for exploiting young people in the name of greed which is shown in the song Wicked World. This very characteristic of rock being created by the youth for the youth is still alive today, for example during the 2004 presidential election Green Day released American Idiot. The song was about how the media and political are brainwashing Americans to remove their individuality. The singer wanted to warn America of this and prevent them from turning into ‘idiots’ and
So, go ahead; open your eyes and discover that grunge is not gone as it seems, it is still among us. Even though it may be wearing new costumes or listening to a different style of music, it is still the same. It is that counter-current movement that kids of new generations want to embrace as their liberty flag. It is that non-conformist dilemma, the spark that lights the fire of those who believe that mainstream society is not the only one. Grunge is still around, maybe not as popular as before, but stronger than ever.
