Life is a balance. With benefits comes obstacles, with every positive moment comes negative times, and with every victory comes a defeat. It is in these times of struggle that we find the greatest lessons, and it is when we face difficulties that make us weak that we show how strong we all are. Do we choose to let the circumstances control us and keep us down, or do we grow and mature into smarter, stronger, and better people? Do we accept the defeat as, "just the way it is", or do we learn from it and use it to our advantage? Every time we are faced with an issue, we make these decisions. Recently, I was faced with a difficulty that not many people will face in their lifetime. This obstacle changed my entire life and is something I will never forget. It put me in a situation that required me to learn both lessons of survival and lessons of the spirit, heart, and mind. This obstacle could've broken me or even killed me, but instead I am still here fighting and growing, dedicated to not let …show more content…
The things I've seen and still continue to see have taken a toll on my spirit and mind. To see first hand the devastation of my own home, my own neighborhood, and the once thriving and gorgeous island of Puerto Rico will forever sadden me and will be a memory so deeply sown into my mind that I cannot even begin to fathom forgetting it. It has been 118 days since I have had power, and I've only had water for 40 of those. The sorrow and pain that I see people feeling hurts my heart, and knowing that there are still people who have trouble accessing even the most basic of necessities troubles me. The stress of not knowing when you'll be able to sleep with the lights on takes a toll on anybody. All the work and clean up that needed to be done after Maria was backbreaking to say the least. The day to day struggles of living without power and water was so demanding and taxing on every aspect of my
Disasters are often followed by reports of damages to the built environment—the cost of buildings, roads, bridges, electricity lines, stores, schools and hospitals. These of course follow the death toll and economic and social impacts of citizen’s lives. It was not different from Hurricane Ike, whose 20-foot surge left one of the biggest damage ever. The stories of how it impacted other things for the benefit do not make much of the well-known history. For Gene Straatmeyer, a resident of Bolivar Peninsula— which was most hit by the storm, the story is not just about how destructive it was.
Hurricane Katrina a catastrophe that changed lives of many peoples, people were left without food and water for days. That storm itself did a great damage lead to the massive flooding,
Hurricane Hugo was a tragic natural disaster that completely altered the lives of many people affected by it. In 1989, the year I was born, my parents and I lived on an oceanfront lot in Myrtle Beach. When Hugo struck, most of the city was flooded, with some areas under twenty five inches of water. A clear evacuation plan was presented, which most of the city’s residents followed, traveling north to Greenville. When we returned to our house, we found nothing but rubble and debris piled up in twelve inches of salt water. The President flew to the areas affected by Hugo to view the devastation, and immediately gr...
Adversity can wreck your life. Adversity can lay you so low that you never recover. But if you stand up to adversity, it can also make you stronger, wiser, and more compassionate. No matter what your background, no matter what your family life is like, and no matter what obstacles are thrown your way, if you have someone who loves you and looks out for you and if you have a
Even though I have had some hardships in my life, I know that I have learned from the mistakes that I made or that other people made. I will take the things that I have learned and apply them to my own life. Dealing with these situations have made me a better person today and I know that it was better to go through these hard times than to never have experienced something like this. Staying positive and adding a little bit of humor to situations has helped me through the harder times in life. In life, there will always be ups and downs. It is good to learn from the down times rather than let them take
In August 2005, at the tender age of 7, I received the most devastating news. I was told by my family that a hurricane was coming to my city, New Orleans, Louisiana. Because of this storm, Hurricane Katrina, I was told that I would most likely have to move away for a long time, meaning the rest of my life. My family and I lost everything, and the hurricane ended up destroying the entire city completely. This was heartbreaking to me for a plethora of reasons, including that I lost loved ones and was separated from the rest of my family at such an early age. This ravaging storm marked the most drastic change of my life.
In life, people will always have something to say about you in everything one does in life, either negative or positive, but it’s the moment when you let what is said upon you affect the way you live your life, that when its becomes a problem. I for myself have been victim of so many people saying things about me and letting get into my head, but I had the courage to overcome a lot of obstacles like that. I have struggled with a lot of obstacles in my life some got the better of me while I have been able to overcome most of them. I am writing this essay to give an example of an obstacle which I struggled with for a very long time and I nearly took the best of me, but with time I was able to overcome it.
Next is the Disillusionment phase. As outside recovery agencies begin to leave and promises of aid are not being fulfilled, feelings of anger, betrayal, abandonment, and disappointment take root. Media coverage lessened significantly, help was leaving and the people of Haiti were still left with massive amounts of destruction. People were still living in makeshift shelters and the rain season was fast approaching. There was even an outbreak in cholera due to contaminated drinking water. It is during the Disillusionment phase that post-traumatic stress symptoms can become
On January 10, 2010, an earthquake took place in Haiti. That catastrophic event had an immense impact on my life, my family, and my faith. As the ground shook under me, I ran out of my room and into the yard. There, I watched half of my house crumble to the ground. All I could hear was shouting, anguished cries and crying. When
And there it was- my life had changed before my very own eyes. Waves crashing, water rising, and wind blowing; consuming everything I have ever had. Hurricane Sandy was by far the most powerful, tragic, and life-changing event I have ever lived to see. Waves upon waves flooded and destroyed my bay-front home, resulting in no other option than tearing down my house and rebuilding a new one. Despite the heartbreak and frustration that this storm brought, it made me the strong person I am today.

Winds roared as roofs were torn off and trees thrown like kindling. I sat in pitch-black darkness listening to the winds howling against the windows, praying with every fiber of my being that our roof would stay intact. It took only a few hours for this monster storm, the largest to ever hit the Atlantic Ocean, to evoke an unforgettable fear in me, a sickening pit of anxiety that would last for days to come. Hurricane Irma, which started out as a tropical depression broke the calibrations of the Saffir-Simpson Wind-Scale with winds over 185 mph as it headed towards my home, the island of St. Maarten. Within a blink of an eye I saw 37 square miles of paradise turn into 37 square miles of devastation.
“Irma destroyed me” On September 6 going at 185 mph speed targeting the Virgin Island, was something new for me. We never had serious hurricane like that. The wind and sea water mix together was so strong that I couldn’t go outside and everything in my house was moving around. My mom, sister and I was fighting with holding on to our house windows and door but it didn’t work out as planned. It was scary because we couldn’t get in contact with none of our family’s.
“An Event Which Changed My Life” An Event which changed my life, well when, I think back on my life there’s Many changes for the good and some were bad but, there were some learning experiences that help make me a better person. The events in my life, was dealing with the Birth and The Death of my first daughter. The First, Event was the birth of my first daughter it, was a joyous event in my life.
People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
