This is an essay where I thematically connect four films, Saving General Yang, No Escape, The Hobbit and Warcraft all together using different film aspects like the characters and their similar situations. This is more for audiences more interested in action/war movies as they are all focused on this genre, in particular my peers and English teacher. The theme I have been studying this year is ‘Overcoming Adversity’. Before studying this theme I thought overcoming adversity was about people overcoming their fears and phobias, but now I know that it is when people overcome their current problems to accomplish a certain goal. For example, when Mark grew potatoes to last on Mars and return home to Earth. The four texts I will be connecting are …show more content…
The example of “Overcoming adversity” in this movie is when the dangerous civil war takes place in Thailand between the rebels and the government, trapping a family of Americans in the hostile country, and it is up to the parents whether they live or die. A quote from the movie which contributes to the adversity is when Jack tells his wife “There’s a war going on out there”. The adversity they encounter is mentally and physically challenging because this requires them to think and make fast decisions as well as fight for their lives if they had to. During their struggle to reach safety they tried to take shelter at the American Embassy which was a disappointment because it was completely destroyed. I think the author and director is trying to show us that a very spontaneous adversity could arise but the best way to overcome the adversity is with teamwork, good decisions and will to fight for your life like how the family did things they could never dream of. In conclusion, although these two films/texts are in completely different time periods, one ancient, one modern and have different situations. The adversity the characters from both movies have to face in my opinion are both quite similar because in both movies, the protagonists have to save someone they love from dangerous enemies which leads to the “adversity” they have to overcome. Something similar about a character from No Escape and a character from Saving General Yang is how the father in No escape and the Eldest brother in Saving General Yang both have the trait of leadership and bravery which was two very crucial characteristics. This is because without these traits, the father from No Escape would have never had the bravery to lead his family to safety and the eldest brother from Saving General Yang would have never had the courage to lead his brothers
Often in works of literature, a character struggles against powerful forces or obstacles, and these have a significant effect on the character. In the fictional novel Deathwatch by Robb White, the protagonist Ben is an example of a character who has to struggle against powerful forces or obstacles. Ben is a college student who wants to be a geologist. He was given an opportunity to earn some extra cash to help pay for college. The only thing he had to do was to guide a big game hunter named Madec in the desert to the location where Bighorn Sheep would be found. It sounded easy but he later ran into problems with Madec. He first had to fight through the hardships that was experienced for survival. Then he had to manage to undertake mother nature.
The approach to the hero’s journey in The Hunger Games, Star Wars, and A Wrinkle in Time has many similarities and variables. A few stages of comparison with the three books are during the call to adventure/refusal, the ordinary world, and crossing the threshold.
"The greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure" - Sven Goran Eriksson. Success is an achievement in life which most people would be appreciative towards, but failure is looked upon in a disgraceful manner. People in society tend to face many challenges that occur in their daily lives. Some of these challenges can affect their lives dramatically in a positive or negative way. If one decides not to surmount their challenges they will suffer within themselves for a long period of time. Having confidence within is considered the greatest way to overcome suffering in life. In the novel, The Shipping News, by Annie Proulx, Quoyle deals with many difficult challenges along his life journey by suffering from bad childhood experiences which led him to have a low self confidence, which later on affected him in adulthood as well. All of Quoyle?s life decisions at first were base on him listening to others and continuing life suffering through it day by day but afterwards in the novel near the end, he experiences happiness for the first time. If someone is unable to overcome their bad experiences and fears in the past then they cannot be successful in the future. Also, a person should be strong and have faith in themselves to overcome their fears to fain the joy and happiness in their life. The modern day hero is distinguished as a hero with both successes and failures. A hero?s successes are determined by the hero?s power within themselves to overcome fears and obstacles and failures are determined by the hero?s weak point or flaw which leads to their predicted downfall and portrays them as an atypical hero. A hero can be depicted as an atypical hero at first but can still gain the success and happiness they longed for in the end.
Adversity. A time of misfortune or distress. It’s like facing a problem that is super difficult to overcome. Many people think that they have gone through the worst—that they they have faced the most problems. But have they met Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage? Henrietta Lacks, Douglas Mawson, and Phineas Gage are all amazing people who have gone through the worst for the consideration of science. Doctors took healthy cells from Henrietta Lacks without her consent, and they then used them for research to make millions of dollars. Going on a hard, difficult journey was the story of Douglas Mawson; he also lost his only friends and almost died a few times. Phineas Gage’s story is also filled with adversity, in which he had an iron rod shoot through his head while staying conscious. Out of all of these people, however, Phineas Gage endured the most adversity for many reasons.
The Struggle Of Building Adversity means difficulties or misfortune. When someone's dealing with things or a situation turns out to go against them, they face adversity. Adversity is something someone comes across in life, it's like being part of a person. Decisions and actions are influenced by a lot of things. Conflicts influence all kinds of actions and decisions, depending on the person.
Adversities are often given a negative connotation and view, as most consider them to be hurdles which impede progress. Nevertheless when taken in and accepted under a positive light, adversities can serve as stepping stones through which an individual can better their character. In the face of looming obstacles individuals who persevere come out of the situation as stronger, determined, and more hopeful for the future.
Once, a wise soul has spoken, “Sometimes adversity is what you need to face in order to become successful”. Adversity means having troubles and difficulties. It’s what you need to persevere through in order to do something you’ve wanted to do for a long time. If you want to pass that test, you’ve gotta conquer your fears and fight through all the troubles that arrive in front of you. Become your own hero. Adversity is a situation that took place in the novel “The Outsiders”, by S.E. Hinton.
Adversity is a time of trouble, problem or difficulty for a person. Adversity is a problem that makes a person struggle. Adversity also can affect a person in a positive or negative way. In the story of Victor Frankenstein, the Monster is a creature that Victor Frankenstein made. Once he took his first breath, he was being rejected by everyone which cause him to go through a lot of challenges. Similarly, in the biography of Frida, Frida was a talented artist who had a lot of difficulties in her life. The Monster faced more adversity in his life than Frida.
In this paper I will argue that understanding the context of a film is vital for a more in-depth understanding of it and I will accomplish this through a deep analysis of the following films: Flowers of War, Edge of Heaven, Battleship Potemkin, and the Big Heat.
If an individual were to overcome this adversity, an individual would need strength and courage. In the image through the door these ideas are strongly represented. With symbols of depression and overcoming objectives help give the idea of adversity. Most humans would want to improve their situation. In order to overcome this most people need courage and strength. These qualities are needed in order to not get knocked down over and over. This is why overcoming adversity is so important later in
From a structural perspective, movies and novels appear as polar opposites. A film uses actors, scripts, and a set in order to create a visual that can grab and keep the attention of their viewers. However, an author strives to incorporate deeper meaning into their books. Despite these differences in media, 1984 and The Hunger Games present unique, yet similar ideas.
Success without adversity is impossible. Everyone in life has their ups and downs and nothing in this world is perfect. At some point in life, hardships begin to occur and that’s when the real test begins. Some people rise up and try their absolute best to take a stand against the challenge. Then there are others that would crawl back into their shells, crying for mercy. There should be no excuse for giving up or not putting in the effort. People are only successful in winning the battle of adversity when they are mentally tough. The intense game of adversity can be referred to football.
Being one of the world’s most popular art forms, it was inevitable that these archetypes would find their way into film as well. In this essay I will argue that the films Pulp Fiction, Taxi Driver, Watership Down, and Trainspotting are all versions of The Hero’s Journey, consequently demonstrating just how prevalent these archetypes have become in modern cinema. And that mythology and storytelling are important parts of each culture because they prevent the darkness in our hearts from spreading.
Through the examination of these two texts it is evidently clear that in order for heroes to face their enemies it is vital that they first overcome personal hardships. This is true of the characters in both novels, as we examine their journey toward hero status. Whether their circumstances come from a manipulative external source or from an uncontrollable string of events, they both will undergo a similar process of development.
William Cullen Bryant is one of the most influential people of his time. He was born on November 3, 1794. He is most well-known for writing his poem “Thanatopsis”, which would roughly translate from Greek to “a meditation upon death” in English. This poem is by far his most popular poem. He spent majority of his life studying law, then died as the editor of the New York Evening Post. He was extremely politically fueled and also did not agree with the commonly accepted view of heaven and religion; this idea is shown in his poem. Overall, William Cullen Bryant is the most important American romantic poet of his time.
