The approach to the hero’s journey in The Hunger Games, Star Wars, and A Wrinkle in Time has many similarities and variables. A few stages of comparison with the three books are during the call to adventure/refusal, the ordinary world, and crossing the threshold. For example, in the ordinary world comparison, Luke desires his life on Tatooine to be more exciting and adventurous. For example, in the film, he talks briefly with his uncle about how he wants to join Starfleet Academy, but his uncle won’t let him. While on the other hand, Katniss’ everyday struggle for food, water, fighting diseases, is all she could care for at the moment, because she knows it could be worse. In A Wrinkle in Time, Meg lives life with her mother and brothers with
no imminent danger, but believes that her life is terrible and rotten because her father disappeared. The thing these characters all have in common with thoughts about their lives is that they all desire it to be better. For example, Katniss believes her life would be better if she wasn’t living in a poor district, or if the Capitol didn’t rule over the world. Luke believes his life would be better if he joined Starfleet Academy instead of being a moisture farmer. Meg believes her life would be better if her father would come back. For these reasons, The Hunger Games, Star Wars, and A Wrinkle in Time follow closely related but at the same time extremely different ordinary worlds. The second stage is the call to adventure/refusal. In the Hunger Games, when Prim’s name is called during the reaping, and Katniss doesn’t want to go, but she feels like she has no other choice but to save her sister. For example, in the story it, elaborates in detail about how she felt when her sister’s name was called; breathless and shocked. On the other hand, the call to adventure and refusal is straightforward and easy. Unlike Katniss, he wishes he could come, but has to stick to his ordinary life. A final opposite is the Wrinkle in Time call to adventure. It is when they are brought to another world. It is very brief, abrupt, and uncalled for.

Successful heroes in literature must overcome plenty of obstacles in order to finish their journey. In fact, the journey of a hero in literature is characterized by 12 specific stages: ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of the call, meeting with the mentor, crossing the first threshold, tests and allies, approach, ordeal, reward, the road back, resurrection hero, and return with elixir.1 The Grapes of Wrath is an allegory for the hero’s journey because the Joads experience each of these stages on their trek from Oklahoma to California.

Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
Every hero goes through multiple stages accompanying many obstacles on his or her journey. Although the journeys may differ in detail, structurally, they resemble a sound format. Along the designed adventures, the heroes come into contact with characters that possess fixed personalities or “archetypes.” The stages and archetypes of stories are somewhat predictable, but may take shape in peculiar forms. Both exemplifying heroic characteristics, Sir Gawain from Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by J.R.R. Tolkien and Thomas Becket from Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot structurally go on the same archetypical journey, but diverge in the lessons they learn and where the characters start and end in their journeys.
The human need to be relatable is unquenchable. We love to be able to see parts of ourselves in others, and to be able to feel like our idols are not untouchable. The Hero’s Journey format is one that can be found in almost any story, even in real life. Overall, it is the perfect recipe for keeping readers engrossed. Another place the journey has shown up is in Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand and Odyssey by Homer. These two stories—one a biography, the other, an epic poem—are so effective in their storytelling, it is easy to see how authors today continue to use the same method to make stories that grab the readers’ attention.
