I Peter 5:13 The Epistle or letters were a form of communication used by the Apostles to give instruction, share revelations or defend the truth of the Gospel. The Apostle Peter, who wrote the Epistle of I Peter 5:13, mystifies theologians with the conclusion, the Church at Babylon salutes you in the closing of his Epistle. This letter was probably written at the end of his life. It is thought that after this epistle was written he was arrested and tried. Babylon throughout the bible was a literal place in Asia Minor, which some consider the possibility of a church being planted there. Also a known fact that that Peter was in Rome and died there, whereas there is no conclusive evidence of Peter ever visiting or ministering in Babylon. The characteristic of Babylon as the ruling nation and conqueror of the Jews is also ascribed to Rome. At that time of the writing, Rome was the ruling power and the center of the world as well as the great persecutor of the followers of Christ. In a like manner, the way the nation of Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon’s Temple in the days of King Nebuchadnezzar, Rome demolished Jerusalem and the Second Temple under Titus. Thus Rome is seen as the key enemy of Israel and Jerusalem, and therefore it seems only natural that Babylon church is used as a code name for the persecuted Roman Church during to the great persecution of the …show more content…

St. Peter naturally speak of Rome with such demeaning name when penning such a letter; the allegory in the name is keeping with the condition at that time. Peter has characterized the church the place from which he writes, seems quite in order to be represent Rome as “Babylon.” At the time it seems pretty clear that the name was quite comprehensible to the Jewish readers, for whom it was intended. No Jew in that day would have to think twice what city was meant by “Babylon.” It was therefore wise not to identify his location due to large population of the Christian church in Rome. The Roman faction at this time, even more treacherous now than when Paul wrote his guarded letter to the Thessalonians Church. It would inflame more hostilities if the letter with names and places fell into hostile hands. Another question--where was Babylon? Since the same symbolic name is used in the Book of Revelation, where or whatever further meanings are attached to the designation, it plainly seen as a description for the city of Rome, which has taken the place in the Old Testament Babylon that constantly antagonized the Israelites.
