How to Spot an Out of State Student at University of Maryland Choosing to go to the University of Maryland from my comfortable life in Southern California was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but it has also been one of the best. I had no clue what to expect, I had no friends from home coming with me, and I definitely was not prepared for how different Maryland is from California. In this article I will tell you how to spot a fellow out of state student. 1. The look of confusion on their face when they ask someone where they’re from and they are told a county instead of a state One of the most interesting things about Maryland is the amount of county pride that students have. When I ask people where they are from they constantly reply “Montgomery County,” “Howard County,” or “Queen Ann’s County.” It took me extremely long to understand that people …show more content…
They do not understand the local lingo Walking around campus, it is common to hear students say “I’m from the DMV,” “He totally siced it,” “They put me on blast,” or “I was geeking so hard.” At first when I heard these words I thought that I was listening to another language. Four months later, I have started to embrace these new words and am even trying to implement them into my daily vocabulary. Unfortunately, most of my attempts have been incorrect but with the help of my friends from MOCO (Montgomery County for all you out of staters) I’m sure I will get the hang of it by the end of the year. 4. They are overwhelmed by the amount of state pride The love of the crazy state flag, Testudo, and crabs is obvious once you step foot onto campus. Never have I seen a group of people so extremely proud to be from a state. The amount of love that students have for the black, gold, red, and white flag is insane, and they are constantly repping Maryland through wearing items of clothing with the state flag. The obvious love of Maryland is so infectious that even out of state students embrace the state
Prince George’s County has been the largest school district in Maryland for the past more than twenty years. However, as a result of under funding, compared to other Maryland public school districts, Prince George’s County sustains the second highest percentage of uncertified teachers in the state. The lack of certified teachers has left lasting negative effects on the Prince George’s county school system.
Texas, the Big State that I heard so much about while living in Europe. When people in my country think of the United States of America, Texas comes to mind automatically. So, what is it about this state that makes it so popular, even overseas? Certainly, people associate Texas with cowboys and the place where everything is bigger by definition. However, to better understand such state, it is fundamental to put more emphasis in how it works. In other words, how it was created, and how it is governed.
diatribe, is popular in schools country-wide. In its way, this is a tour de force of black English and underworld slang, as
Since the 1930’s until now, studies show that about 64% of kids and teens have been using slang terms in their school work. It is amazing what some of them are. Slang is used all of the time by almost all people and has changed a lot over the past decades. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses a child’s perspective to show how slang has changed from the 1930’s until today.
heritage in the south. It stands for what we are and where we come from.
The transfer process can be a very daunting experience, especially when creating a college list. Visiting colleges for a brief time gives you a glimpse of what the campus community is like, but it’s a totally different experience when you dorm as a student. I wanted to know what it was like to live in a residential university, to be immersed in a student community, and to be able to create long lasting relationships. Luckily for me, I was informed of the exploring transfer program at Vassar College. This program selects 30 community college students from different states who want to live the college student experience at a 4 year university. Luckily for me, I was selected as part of those 30 students and had an amazing experience. Every student
This video explains what “In-State” and “Out-of-State” means. It explains why you may be considered an in-state student and how you can potentially become one, if you are not already in a state. It is very reliable because the government produced this video to help educate teens and parents with college choices. They use very simple language and are not trying to sugar coat it. This would be useful for my essay because at the beginning it will be useful and in my audience’s best interest if I stated the difference between the two and how they came about and are used.
The number one reason I love West Virginia is because all my family lives here. Moving away would mean missing out on those Sunday lunches at grandmas’, and the annual holiday gatherings. My family is a close knit family who enjoy spending time together even though we do argue. West Virginia as a whole prides itself on their strong family values. I as a West Virginia citizen, have adopted these family values and could never leave the people and state I love the most.
Through these different study and friend groups, almost everyone is able to talk with each other in one way or another. The small scale off both the school and class size also help for one person to meet every other person around them. As one of my friends, Scott Noftsger, said, “I really like them except for the “knowing” of all of us of each other’s business.” This, again, shows the immense amount of communication among the students, with word of each other getting around very quickly, for better or for worse. Along with this though, many new abbreviations for words have come up in LCS that I did not understand when I came to the school from another. Words like “Charter,” “The Rock,” “The Park,” and “The Warden” each mean very specific things around LCS that came out of many inside events or jokes occurring around the students here. Although some other schools may use the same terms, the use them in different ways and mean different things by them then we do at Charter. With all of these different occurrences, terms, and way of communication combined, it is easy to see the complex interactions between the students at LCS as a more distinct characteristic of the
In 2011, a team from the University of Maryland discovered relics at a former plantation house, called the Wye House, in Talbot County, Maryland. A set of West-African charms were buried in the entrance of its greenhouse, once put there centuries ago. When we were given more information, we discovered that the green house was sectioned on “Slave quarters,” meaning that the area was where slaves lived. Overall, the team inferred that the charms were hidden by slaves.
Being an international student is exciting. It offers a lot of exposure and scope for improvement. Canada has a lot of institutions that accept foreign students, but before that, the practical difficulties an international student might face in the country should be noted.
“A good education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” We come to school to learn is what we have been taught. As if everything that has been learned from birth until now has been deemed invalid. Learning in done in the classroom; living is done in life. With no connection between the two. However to truly receive a good education is based solely on the ability to apply what you have learned to everyday experiences. Education as a whole is on a much bigger scale than sitting in the classroom in front of the teacher. Education is the interaction and encounters we experience and the lessons learned that not only gauge intelligence but also character. There are many things
Slang in America has developed throughout many generations, and people have used it to shorten big words and expressions to get their message across faster and simpler. Many writers have argued whether slang corrupts or benefits the English language. Tom Dalzell, an expert on American slang, wrote in his essay about the impact of young people on the development of slang. He simply states that “youth slang is a core element of youth culture”. Slang helps define one’s identity and allows young people to freely express themselves in various ways. Slang cannot be fully annihilated by even the most repressive attempts by adult authority, but to some extent where it shouldn’t be used. Slang plays a key role in youth culture and they are the ones
Slang is the use of words and phrases in an informal way. We often use slang to make communicating easier. Slang can be used in both speech and text and affects the way students communicate. We use slang in text to express emotions such as, “LOL.” Slang is also commonly used in our everyday lives. Although, slang can be used to make communication with another individual easier it can also lead to problems with the way they act at school. Slang can also cause people to feel excluded from a certain social group. Without the knowledge of the lingo people will feel left out. Understanding the uses of slang can help determine what kinds social
