Being an international student is exciting. It offers a lot of exposure and scope for improvement. Canada has a lot of institutions that accept foreign students, but before that, the practical difficulties an international student might face in the country should be noted. 1. Issues faced by students: Issues arise when the expectation does not meet the reality, or due to misinformation. The various issues an average student might be classified as follows. 1.1. Economic (Financial) issues: The first issue an international student faces in Canada is the fees. Fees structures vary for domestic and international students. As Denise Hansen says in her essay ‘Life of International Students in Canada is Eye Opening’, "The average tuition and ancillary …show more content…
The international students are expected to pay the full tuition fee, whereas the domestic students are eligible for heavy government subsidies and that is one of the reasons why there is a huge difference between the fee amounts. Many students take up part time jobs to make ends meet, but it is imperative to note that job opportunities are very limited and even those jobs that are available do not give a substantial income. Therefore, they must rely on their own money and be prepared for the expenses. In addition to spending more on the actual education and university fees, the international students also have to spend on boarding and food. Finding a place to stay that is conveniently near to the university and other places of interaction, is affordable, accepts immigrants, and suits the basic requirements - is hard, sometimes impossible. A compromise on at least one criterion of the above is required to sustain in the new country. 1.2. Social …show more content…
While most try to be helpful, by speaking slowly and guiding using written notes, directions, instructions and invitations, it still requires a lot of effort on the international student 's part to understand the numerous accents. Abundance of slangs is another huge issue. A lot of slang terms, most specific to a region or time period are difficult to follow if one is not aware of the local culture, specialities and quirks. Even if a student settles in Canada for years, most of the local slang will still go over their head. Students must focus on learning the most common ones and learn to differentiate between friendly sarcasm and intended offense, of which there is expected to be very
(Listen first, then questions) Yes, it is true that most of Canada does have excellent schools, colleges that highly excel in a certain subject, gifted schools, and learning institutions, but our educational standards are not set as high as other countries. For example, in some countries,
What does being Canadian mean to me? Well I think we do have several experiences and values that we generally share (although not necessarily all at the same time). Things like hockey, poutine, maple syrup, our environment and all that as well as a respect for democracy, individual and reasonably limited rights and freedoms. We won’t share all of these interest and experiences—that merely make us human—but I think that not only does it play a role in what makes us Canadian, but also how we view Canada. However, through this course, I have learned that there is another way of looking at Canada, through geographical lenses. It’s a concept that focuses on the idea that there is more to places/landscapes/nature then there is. It doesn’t just show
All people are raising and educating according to principles and rules in their motherland. Firstly, before moving to Canada immigrants should make research about cultural differences between Canada and their country of origin. According to Gignac (2013) Canada is very attractive for people who are looking for economic stability and possibilities, as well as for peaceful and safe place. However to take advantage of all opportunities, immigrants should find as much as they can about Canada, about what and who is important in Canadians life and why. Small things like for example small talks can make newcomers life easier, can help to find friends or create a distance between Canadians and im...
International students need to work hard and use the services and the programs as much as they can to learn the language and to build the confidence. Since it's their biggest goal to be successful in academic life and it's the reason for moving abroad, it's their job to improve their English skills like listening, speaking, writing and reading in some useful ways such as, watching English movies, reading some stories or novels, talking to Native speakers, chatting in English online and giving a good attention in the classes.
Adrienne Clarkson attended a small public school in the city. Even from a young age, Adrienne has a positive outlook on Canada: “...she has an unapologetically rosy outlook on Canada as a country of infinite possibilities, and a sober view of how newcomers should adapt” (Beltrame, Web). Adrienne Clarkson knew the that her life in Canada would drastically
1. Because I am from the United States, Canada and the US share many similar qualities in a household. The most challenging aspect of staying in any homestay, however, is learning to live by yourself. Another challenging thing in regards to staying in a Canadian homestay is adjusting to the different foods and brands here. Although the food isn't dramatically different from where I am from, it was slightly difficult to adjust at first.
Since Canada is a young and a relatively newly-established country, people who are foreign to Canada know little about the country. As a result, they often speculate from rumors and stereotypes that usually lead to misconceptions. Some people have biased opinions about the country that comes from their little experience with Canada. Also, foreigners may view the country from their own country’s perspective that may not apply to that of another country, and most importantly, to the truth. Therefore, the global perception of Canada is often not accurate.
Canada is the most diverse and multicultural country in the world, “Our people speak more than 130 languages and they hail from about 200 different countries” (Ontario Immigration, 2016, para. 2.). Everyone can be themselves and is not forced to change, but is encouraged to represent their culture and express themselves as they would naturally. You will still be part of the same large community you have come from just surrounded by people of other cultures.
It is true that sometimes international student face financial hardship while coping with the new lavish life style of United States of America. Huge funding support from my dear parents and my inherent economical nature make me so relax in this matter.
What i think when i start thinking about canadian culture is all the years Canada has been under the british empire and how that has had a big impact on the country because even though canada is its own country now we still see the queen on our money and there is still a queen's representative in the senate which still shows we are not onehoundred percent separated from England, which takes it back to the culture and how was this country like prior to this day.Even though we all like to see the positive side of the story the Canadian culture has had a lot of bad in it same as any other culture of any other country; I'm talking about the assimilation, racism and in country conflicts in between
Perhaps this trip to Canada will turn out to be my becoming of age story. Although it will not be the first time I will be traveling without my parents, it will certainly be the first time the distance exceeds 2000 kilometers. Even though my teachers will be a part of the trip, their presence will be limited as the program is filled with student-time. Therefore, many aspects of the journey will be new to me and by that way a learning experience. For example, I am going to manage my own money and for the first time use my job salary on necessary things such as food. I hope that this will teach me the value of money as I often forget how lucky I am. Furthermore, things such as navigating the city and behaving accordingly to certain standers require an adult
Despite the international system being anarchical, it is not in a state of total chaos due to a number of significant factors such as those above. It is obvious that the current international system is highly influenced by many significant factors and some are more prominent than others. With the continued existence of international anarchy it is up to the States and the International Organisations to continue to make the decisions that are in their own best interest and to maintain order and an ever-improving way of life.
There has always been a debate as to which universities are better, Canadian or American. Most of us chose the States as our desired destination due to its collection of highly-ranked, well-known universities. However, this year, like a lot of international students around the world, my peers and I changed our minds and were determined to go to Canada. According to the Atlantic, American universities experienced a 39% decline in international undergraduate students just from the Middle Eastern region (Bendix, 2017). In contrast, Canadian universities like Concordia and the University of Alberta have experienced a 27% increase in their international undergraduate applications from countries like India (+233%), Mexico (+325%) and Iran (+317%) (ICEF, 2017). Surprisingly, many Canadian universities have seen a 50% increase in American students this year (ICEF, 2017). One of the main reasons for this sudden change was the rising ethnocentrism in the States during and post 2017 elections. Ethnocentrism is the practice of judging another culture by the standards of one's own culture and usually creates a divide between societies as one culture is considered superior to the other (LSE, 2017). During the election, President-elect, Donald Trump used ethnocentrism to create anger, fear, and divide between the ethnic majorities and minorities through ideas such as the immigration ban
cerned factors when planning advanced education abroad. Usually, before the application process, international students should already ensure their financial sponsorship. The support may from their government program, employer, bank loans, and, in most cases, their parents. Therefore, es- tablishing a comprehensive expenditure plan in advance, which covers most predictable expenses, is very important for international students. However, expenditure inherits heterogeneity and may vary a lot in different months beacause of emergencies, purchases of expensive durables, holiday travel, and so on. Also, such a pre-plan must base on rational expenditure esti- mation because living expenditure is affected by multiple factors, such as the location of the university, price level, personal shopping habit, personal rquired living standard and so on. These uncertainties make international students’ expenditure estimation even more difficult. The above two features of expenditure are the main reasons why international students’ expenditure estimation worth discussing.
It is also Government’s responsibility to ensure barrier free public access to post-secondary education system; however, Canadian students enrolled in the post-secondary institutions are required to pay tuition fees. The increasing need for higher skilled labour supply has given rise to an ongoing debate whether the post-secondary education in Canada should also be tuition free.
