Do you ever feel like your society worries too much about appearance and what people think of them? The story Out of my Mind, by Sharon Draper, puts you in the shoes of Melody, a girl with cerebral palsy. She can’t talk, but she has a lot to say. Out of my Mind should be preserved because it’s relatable through how the main character thinks and feels, it will change the way you view things and people, and it has good messages such as knowledge is power and don’t judge a book by its cover.

The friends and family of Melody understand and accept her for who she is. Melody is genuinely smart but can’t show it because of her disability, but that doesn’t stop her from trying her best. Throughout the book she works out ways of showing what she is thinking and feeling, such as her board with letters to make sentences, and later in the book uses an inclusion model so that she is no longer in disabled classes. Melody’s classmates doubted her and her ability to tryout for a national exam competition that she ended up winning. Judging a book by its cover and knowledge being power is applied because being smart isn’t based upon your physical appearance which Melody proves to her classmates. This relates to Fahrenheit 451 because of Clarisse and who she is as a person. If Montag judged her before meeting her, he wouldn’t have realized how great of an impact she had on his life. The text says “You’re one of the few who put up with me.” (Bradbury 23) This is because people don’t give her a chance and doubt her abilities.
