It is a common misconception that when a person wants to be healthy they must eat in smaller portions, and while this does have some truth, one must consider when it comes to eating healthy, it means to eat healthy by adding nutritious portions of fruits, vegetables, protein, carbs, and of course, calcium intake for the bones in one’s diet. Also, one must not deprive themselves of having a “cheat day” once a week with chips and candy. But it is a good start to begin adding calcium to fortified foods and supplements, such as milk. People should at least aim for 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium.
Osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as “brittle bones disease,” is a rare genetic disorder that affects the body’s production of type I collagen, which is the major protein of the body’s connective tissue. Generally, people affected with OI either have too little of type I collagen, or the quality of it is poor. Collagen defects account for about 85%.1 However, proteins in the bones may be affected in some of the more uncommon forms of OI. Because of this defect, people with OI have fragile bones, which break easily without an apparent cause.
My patient is a 55-year-old woman presenting to the clinic complaining of episodes of feeling “hot and sweaty” during the day and is waking up at night soaked with perspiration. Because her sleep is so disrupted, she is tired all day and is having trouble concentrating at work. She says that the episodes are becoming unbearable and is seeking treatment for them.
