Osmosis Jones is a comedy film that has biology concepts embedded in it. The main characters in the film are Osmosis Jones, who is a Leucocyte white blood cell, Drix, who is a cold pill and the antagonist who is a deadly Pathogen called Thrax. These characters are all part of a human called Frank and his biological system. Since this movie is partially animated, it gives the audience a look into the human body and simultaneously discusses many biological jokes and concepts through the dialogue. The film’s major conflict arises when Frank eats a boiled egg that is filthy and has been in a monkey’s mouth. This is how the deadly bacteria, Thrax manages to enter Frank’s mouth and begins to destruct his body. In our immune systems the first defense …show more content…
While chasing them, Jones attempts to fire his gun at them only for it to miss and hit one of the electricity pylons that are the nerves in Frank’s body. This causes Frank to feel a sudden, sharp pain in his leg that he calls “a cramp” and he’s forced to fall to the ground. In reality, our nerves are in fact extremely sensitive and if any damage is caused to them it can severely effect the movement of our body, just like we saw Frank fall onto the ground. During this time we are introduced to the Mayor of Frank Town, Mayor Phlegmming whose office is in the Cerebellum of the body. From his name we can infer that he isn’t the right one for the job because of the word “phlegm”, which is sticky mucus that is secreted during a cold. The name Phlegmming foreshadows that he doesn’t exactly have what it takes to be the mayor of Frank Town. A misconception in Frank’s body is that the Cerebellum controls many diverse actions of the body, such as controlling Frank’s immune system and his thoughts. In actuality, the Cerebellum is not as capable as it was displayed in the movie to be, it only controls the movement of muscles. After Frank’s body begins to get effected by the viruses in his system, Mayor Phlegmming controls his thoughts and through brain signals, instead of sending him a doctor who would make him change his lifestyle, he simply advises him to take a cold pill and this is how one of the main characters Drix enters the body. Drix only has 12 hours of germ fighting energy, after which he has to excrete the body, so he immediately takes up the role of covering up any signs of

Thomas disccuseed thr “paranoid delusions on a societal scale,” that we have against human diseases or our “enemies.” The book contiuniuously uses anaphora by saying that diseases result from “inconclusive negoitions for symbiosis” and misinterpretation of biology” The fact that bacteria can only be harmful from practiacally harming themselves is an interesting point to point out. That shows the reader that the only way they could be harmed from bacteria, wouls be if the bacteria had gotten itself “sick” first. Thomas talks about certain microorganisms that have “advantages in their ability to affect himan beinhg, but that there is nothing to be gained, in an evolutionary sense, by the capacity to caue illness or death.” Another reassuraing statement for readers is when he says, pathogenicy is a disadvantage for most microbes because they are carrying
The hero is now leaving the ordinary world and entering the supernatural world. Upon entering this supernatural world, Jones faces many unwanted and unexpected trials. The first is when Mayor Phlegmming removes Jones from his position on the case. Subsequently, Drix tells the mayor that he would like to still be able to work with Jones and the mayor allows it to happen. As a result of this, Drix and Jones become actual partners and work together for the remainder of their job in fighting off Thrax. Thrax, better known as the red death, is the disease that is brought into Frank as a result of eating the infested egg. Thrax’s goal is to take down Frank in less than forty-eight hours from the inside out, ultimately by overheating him. Many problems are created as a result of Thrax, but the dynamic duo, Drix and Jones never give up. All is well until the mayor strips Jones from the job and sends Drix out of the body. The two become very depressed realizing they will not be able to defeat the red death together and end up going their separate ways. Mayor Phlegmming still believes that it is just a common cold, yet the dynamic duo knows that there is more to it. Jones then comes to realize that Thrax is still alive and tracks down Drix so that they can tackle the red death together. As they hunt down the red death, the body starts to overheat and Frank himself

The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher by Lewis Thomas consists of short, insightful essays that offer the reader a different perspective on the world and on ourselves.
Considering the fact that Marc has both been sweating and drinking minimal amounts of water, Marc is now dehydrated. This means he has less than the required amount of water for his body to complete the processes necessary to maintain its health. As stated in the question, the process of sweating causes the loss of more water than solutes. This means that as the level of water decreases, the level of solute concentration will increase, creating a change in the water to solute ratio.
Throughout the novel several different characters are introduced to the reader, such as Ralph, Jack, Simon and Piggy. With all these characters presented to the reader, one can get to see into their minds-eye, which allows the reader to analyze their character. In this case one could examine their basic morals and distinguish between the person’s natural instinct to rely on civilization or savagery to solve their problems. The author of the novel, William Golding, had a “first-hand experience of battle line action during World War II” which caused him to realize, “[that] The war alone was not what appalled him, but what he had learnt of the natural - and original- sinfulness of mankind did. It was the evil seen daily as commonplace and repeated by events it was possible to read in any newspaper which, he asserted, were the matter of Lord of the Flies” (Foster, 7-10). This being said by Golding leads one to the central problem in the novel the Lord of the Flies, which can be regarded as the distinction between civility and savagery. This can be seen through the characters that are presented in the novel, and how these boys go from a disciplined lifestyle, to now having to adapt to an unstructured and barbaric one in the jungle.
Osmosis Experiment Planning Aim: The main subject that I will be planning to investigate is the effects of a concentrated sucrose solution on potato cells on the basis of the Osmosis theory. Background knowledge: The plant cell and its structure To understand osmosis in detail I will need to explain the plant cell (which is the cell included in the osmosis experiment) and its cell membrane. Below I have a diagram of a plant cell: [IMAGE] Osmosis is about the movement of particles from a higher concentrated solution to a lower concentrated solution to create an ethical balance via a partially or semi permeable cell membrane. Osmosis in simple terms is the exchange of particles between the cytoplasm inside the cell and the solution outside the cell. What makes this exhange is the partially permable cell membrane.
The objective of the host is to "escape" from the pathogen. This can be done through the use of the immune system or by quickly dying. When a host dies with the pathogen still inside the pathogen dies as well. Resistance to invaders evolved as a result of the development of the mechanism of immunity. The development of immunity depends on the recognition of differences in chemical structures of substances.
During one of the tribe’s assemblies, when Ralph had spoken “Nobody knows where we are. We may be here a long time”(34), a silence passed. No one has spoken because everyone is having a moment to themselves, fantasizing about happy days at home. This desolation of society has turned Jack’s civilized form into a thirsty hungry savage. The beast within gained control of the boys and fought to protect them from the so called frightening beast. What the boys haven’t recognized is that physically there was no beast, all they are are illusions playing in their minds. Simon, the only boy who respects nature, is the only one to actually figure out the true meaning of the beast in a vision showing a conversation with the Lord of the Flies. The Lord of the Flies had stated in a condescending manner “there isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the beast...Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill!...You knew, didn't you? I'm part of you?... I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are the way they are?” (143). This is validating that the Lord of the Flies knew that mother nature always wins for no one should destroy its natural cycle. It foreshadowed how Simon would die by unintentional causes. He died trying to tell the rest of the boys that they have mistakenly killed the pilot by hitting the parachute with rocks, and not the beast. When this happened, the air was dark and humid with a storm approaching. The weather is indication that Simon’s death would be happening in a matter of time. Just like the pilot, the boys unintentionally kill an innocent victim because of their delusional minds. In the first stages of killing Simon, the boys kept on chanting “Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood,” (152) increasing the tone in agony, allowing the inner beasts to gain full control. They surrounded Simon to secure him from escaping and tore

These trials begin when Drix and Jones go to the nose to make sure everything is running smoothly. All seems to be okay until the cartilage gets broken by Thrax, the deadly virus responsible for Frank’s illness, and his accomplices. Osmosis and Drix must keep the dam from breaking completely before moving on. This is also the first glimpse that Osmosis gets of Thrax, and when he tries to alert the mayor of him, he gets brushed off. Even though everyone continues to dismiss what Osmosis is saying about Thrax, he decides to continue pursuing the
Since the main goal for these corporations are to maximize their profit, it is in their best interest to come up with the most efficient and productive techniques to accomplish this objective. Many harmful effects are overlooked by corporations and the government in order to increase productivity and keep costs low. The details with the food itself, the animals that are produced, the workers in the assembly lines, and the actual consumers that may lead to numerous harmful effects. The film examines the industrial side of meat production by showing footage inside of the meat processing planets and describes this as ‘inhumane, economically and environmentally unsustainable’. There was a problem with the bacterial cell, e. coli, getting into food by unsanitary practices of the meat processing plants. Often cow and pigs would just stand in their own manure that contained e. coli for days on end and that would have the possibility of getting into the meat that is served to customers. Some food corporations had problems with exploitations of workers that contribute to their product. The film showed that many chicken farmers are treated poorly and dive deeper into debt by producing more and more. Companies will also target illegal foreign workers to make their products in order to cut down on costs as
The movie Outbreak is a wonderful portrayal of how the Chain of Infection works in an epidemic and pandemic outbreak of a disease. The shows how quickly the disease gained power and was responsible for sickness and death in a small community. Pathogens that invade the body have 5 requirements for a successful invasion on their host whether it is a human or animal. I will further review how the movie successfully reflects the reservoir/host, portal of exit, mode of transmission, portal of entry and susceptible host to provide the perfect Outbreak of the disease. The same model still used today in science.
