Life of a Cell
In “Life of a Cell,” the author uses rhetoric and figurtic language to reassure peoples fear of disease and to assure them the bodies system is fully capable to attacking anything that would be an issue or illness to itself. He writes about the fear of germs and bacteria; the ineveitibility of germs attacking a cell system. He writes about the many preventions and precautions others take to avoid diseases which metaphorically they “come after them for profit.” Thomas writes this in less scienfitic terms that an average person could comprehend and be assured that their fears are irritaonal to an extent. By using metaphors, similes, personification, and imagery, the reader is reassured that the human body is fully capable of handling diseases.
Thomas disccuseed thr “paranoid delusions on a societal scale,” that we have against human diseases or our “enemies.” The book contiuniuously uses anaphora by saying that diseases result from “inconclusive negoitions for symbiosis” and misinterpretation of biology” The fact that bacteria can only be harmful from practiacally harming themselves is an interesting point to point out. That shows the reader that the only way they could be harmed from bacteria, wouls be if the bacteria had gotten itself “sick” first. Thomas talks about certain microorganisms that have “advantages in their ability to affect himan beinhg, but that there is nothing to be gained, in an evolutionary sense, by the capacity to caue illness or death.” Another reassuraing statement for readers is when he says, pathogenicy is a disadvantage for most microbes because they are carrying

deadly risks that are more frighting to them then us. That being said, Thomas is, in a way, personifying a microbe, by giving it emotion compared to a human being, so that the subject can be more understood. To prove the body is capable of fending off diseases, Thomas gives examples of how a person is in considerably less danger for their life if they catch meningococcus, even without chemo. Another example he talked about was hemolytic staphylococci, which is “one of our closest intimates,” and how it is only our reaction to its presence in our muscle cells that puts the person in danger. Thomas mentioned that we even carry brucella in out system for long periods of time without even knowing, and when we do sense them it is a reaction of the clinical disease. Bacteria is “totally preoccupied” with altering organic molecules; they are “indispensable to eachother” and live in interdependent places with soil or sea. In the final statements, Thomas writes that microorganisms seem to metaphorically “have it in for us in the worst way” which is the reason people fall ill. He compares them, using the figurative language simile, to rather be like “bystanders, strays, and strangers in from the cold.” It is said that, realictically, microooragisms will invade your body, but it is actually our response to their presence that makes the disease. Instead of saying that immune systems are powerful, he compares it to an arsenal that uses its power to fight off bacteria. Thomas writes that others are actually are in more danger from our “arsenals” than our “invaders.” He shows usage of imagery by visually comparing our immune system fighting off bacteria as a huge battle, and the power our immune systems have against the “enemy” or bacteria. The last sentence, “we live in the midst of explosive devices; we are mined,” is a metaphor, it is like we are right between our immune system and bacteria and microorganisms fighting against eachother. In Life of Cell, Thomas breaks down medical jargon to where an average person can grasp how their immune system is capable to protect and prevent bacteria.
By breaking the terms down, hes gives clear images of what he wants to show the reader, and he personifies actions a nonliving organism does, and he uses metaphoric language as well as
similes.
In the novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the author, Rebecca Skloot, tries to convince the audience that her argument regarding, Henrietta and her cells is worth thinking about. Skloot argues that the woman whose body contained these life-changing cells deserved to be recognized. While trying to prove her side of the argument, Skloot uses logos within the novel to emphasize to the audience just how important her cells are, by providing the science behind the cells and their accomplishments.
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.

One idea that I have came away with after reading Survival of the Sickest is that evolutionary adaptations are not always perfect for the species; in fact, many times an evolutionary adaptation is a compromise. Furthermore, I have realized that every aspect of humans today is a product of evolution. Hence, every detail of why something in the human body is the way it is can be explained by its value to the species at some point – whether past or present – for survival or increased ability to reproduce. Lastly, the wide, extensive discussion presented in the novel demonstrates to me how important evolution is to biology. In every single idea, theory, or hypothesis explained, evolution connected the concepts together.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.

The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
" His use of imagery and descriptive language makes the dream all the more realistic for the reader, and exemplifies the restless feeling the adrenaline gives him. Though fictional, this novel illustrates the fear surrounding disease, viruses, and contamination and how if uncontrollable, could lead to a global spread that could jeopardize the human race. Traveling internationally, World War Z represents a zombie epidemic that brings forth infection, which can be considered an unconscious actor during this time of confusion and destruction. Scientifically, fear is defined as a natural response found in almost all organisms that revolve around the emotions and feelings induced by perceived threats and danger. Max Brooks illustrates the societal interaction with fear, “Fear of aging, fear of loneliness, fear of poverty, fear of failure. Fear is the most basic emotion we have. Fear is primal. Fear sells. That was my mantra. ‘Fear sells.’” (Brooks 55). The fear of a zombie virus spreading in fact just produces more fear into the mind of the individual. Through research and scientific advancements, fears and anxieties have been proven to put an individual more at risk of developing health issues. How ironic, right? Our fears and anxieties surrounding diseases and the spread of them cause our society to be more susceptible to obtain and contract more health related problems. Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). Disease is considered an horrid word; by definition it is a disorder within an organism which implies it is unwanted and needs to be fixed. However in, Dr. Sharon Moalem and Jonathan Prince’s book, Survival of the Sickest the authors discuss a topic one does not often hear, the benefits of sickness. Diabetes, hemochromatosis, and sickle cell anemia are just a few problems that in the past helped us survive long enough to reproduce.
The subject of death is one that many have trouble talking about, but Virginia Woolf provides her ideas in her narration The Death of the Moth. The moth is used as a metaphor to depict the constant battle between life and death, as well as Woolf’s struggle with chronic depression. Her use of pathos and personification of the moth helps readers develop an emotional connection and twists them to feel a certain way. Her intentional use of often awkward punctuation forces readers to take a step back and think about what they just read. Overall, Woolf uses these techniques to give her opinion on existence in general, and reminds readers that death is a part of life.

The novel is written in a short, choppy sentence structure using simple word choice, or diction, in a stream of consciousness to enable the reader to perceive the novel in the rationale of an eleven-year-old girl. One short, simple sentence is followed by another, relating each in an easy flow of thoughts. Gibbons allows this stream of thoughts to again emphasize the childish perception of life’s greatest tragedies. For example, Gibbons uses the simple diction and stream of consciousness as Ellen searches herself for the true person she is.
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.
The poisons that we are introducing into our environment is causing us a new slew of health problems. We once had to worry about things such as the bubonic plague, but now, we have to worry about what Rachel refers to as “environmental disease” (p.169).
