INTRODUCTION:
For treatment with a fixed orthodontic appliance, separation of the molars is necessary to create enough space for the bands that anchor the appliance. Different types of separators have been used in orthodontics for tooth separation (eg. Brass wires, latex elastics and elastomerics, spring type steel separators, etc) 1
The ideal separator should be safely secured between the teeth, giving rapid and good separation without causing the patient much discomfort or pain, thereby making the fitting of the band to the tooth easy. Moreover, the separator should be easily cleaned and not be lost before its intended duration of stay.
Currently, elastomeric modules are the separators of choice as they provide rapid and adequate separation of the molars to create adequate space for the placement of bands around them. They are commonly placed for several days or usually a week. Due to continued force and occlusal interferences, elastomeric separators inevitably produce discomfort and pain which increases to a peak level at approximately 24 hrs of placement and can last the whole week.1 These separators are consequently lost during eating and/or brushing and the loss is unnoticed by the patient. In most cases, the separators need to be placed again leading to an extra visit to the orthodontic office for band placement. Because the

A gradual reduction of contact point tightness often permits separator loss before the banding appointment. This can occur during eating or brushing and results in rebounding of teeth and return to the initial contact point thickness. A separator is lost when the space gained is wide enough so that during mastication, the occlusal part of the elastomeric ring is compressed below the contact point and gets embedded into the gingival
Braces date back to even ancient times, they are not a modern day concept. Archaeologists have found mummies with metal bands hugging certain teeth, which were around 400-500 BC. The first documented ligature wire was found in a Roman tomb in Egypt. In a more modern and known time such as when George Washington had his wooden teeth dentist were thinking about bad bites and how they could correct it. Roughly around the 1800s a man named Delabarre marked the start of contemporary orthodontics with the introduction of the wire crib. The wire crib is the wire put in the brackets. As we know braces than and braces now differ quite a bit. In the 1900’s braces were out of gold, platinum, silver, steel, gum rubber, and even wood. The wire was made out of gold! That had a lot of setbacks due to the fact it is a very soft material so constant adjustments were needed. Now, towards the mid 1970’s was the end of the wrap around metal, they had finally come up with a bonding agent to glue brackets on the tooth surface (S, 2002). We may have thought braces were barely invented but, as we have seen they have been around since even 4...
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry which involves the prevention and correction of irregularities in the teeth. The ones who practice orthodontics and specialize the field are called orthodontists. An orthodontist has specialized and in depth knowledge about the human teeth and jaws. Providing treatment for people who have problems associated with their teeth and jaws has been their goal. The treatment provided will be varied from person to person depending on their ailment. The orthodontists make sure that our teeth and jaws are in good condition.
First of all, if I had not gotten my braces, then my teeth would not be how they are today. They are perfectly straight thanks to Dr. Spiller. I wear my retainer every night. Their company has allowed me to design my own retainer, and I wear it every night to keep my teeth straight for the years to come. Every time that I have an orthodontics appointment, I am greeted with a smile. The staff always makes me feel welcome, and they are gentle when working on my teeth. Every trip I have taken to the orthodontist has
For personal or professional reasons, some people do not want visible clasps on their partial dentures. Clasps are not needed to maintain stability with a semi-precision denture. Interlocking male/female attachments placed on the denture and abutment teeth, which are usually crowned, hold the denture securely in place and provide stability.
A bad bite occurs when your teeth are protrusive, crowded, meet in either abnormal way or does not meet or are spaced too far apart. The orthodontists usually guide your teeth into their exact positions with the help of the aligners and the braces. They then stabilize and preserve the results with the help of retainers. Though the main age groups that
Abnormal wear of tooth surfaces was an orthodontic problem early on, even ancient people wanted straight teeth! To close gaps, it has been construed that catgut did the work now done by today’s orthodontic wire. In 400-500 BC, Hippocrates and Aristotle both ruminated about ways to level teeth and fix many dental conditions. It should be noted that in Medieval times, expert barbers often performed dental “operations”, extractions, and procedures such as blood-letting. In seventeen twenty-eight, French Dentist Pierre Fauchard published a book called “The Surgeon Dentist” about ways to straighten and align teeth. He used a device called a “Bandeau,” a horse-shaped piece of precious metal which helped...
Not everyone aspires to have two different careers in life, and some even find it hard to figure out just one to begin with. Orthodontics and Dentistry are two different but similar jobs down the same career path. They both require an insane amount of time, dedication, and schooling. When it comes to job description, work environment, and salary, both can be compared and contrasted.
Orthodontists and dentist both help patients maintain healthy oral care, but in different ways. Dentistry is a general medical field that deals with the teeth, gum, nerves, and jaw. Orthodontics is a specialty within dentistry that specializes on adjusting bites, occlusion, and straightness of teeth; they study the art and science of orthodontia. Orthodontia is the study and treatment of malocclusions due to irregular tooth positions and adverse jaw growth. Orthodontia comes from the Greek. “Orthos” meaning proper or straight and “odous” meaning tooth. The main resemblance amongst dentist and orthodontist is that they both focus on making sure you have healthy oral care. An orthodontist can work in a dental office and provide the same care as a dentist.
Dentistry as a profession over the years has evolved rapidly in light of new scientific evidence. Rapidly evolving science and technology have implemented changes within dentistry as evidenced by new standards and guidelines being produced by nationally recognised associations including National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), Faculty of General Dental Practice (FGDP) and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) in Scotland, in provision of new scientific evidence. The latest standards and guidelines produced, endorse everyday clinical practice through evidence based dentistry (REF). All dental professionals as part of continued professional development are expected to keep to date on relevant guidelines and knowledge related to their practice (REF). This is supported by the General Dental Council who state all clinicians must maintain their professional knowledge and competence throughout their working career (REF).
Healthcare is a necessity to sustain society. Dentistry is an area of healthcare that I feel extremely passionate about because access to proper dental care is limited, especially in the underserved communities. As an African American, I want to become a dentist and healthcare provider in the hopes of helping patients and adding to the diversification of the field. With a growing minority population in the United States, it has become apparent that there is a shortage of black dentists. This is problematic because underrepresented minorities are in great need of access to culturally connected dentists who understand their clinical needs as much as their lives and their challenges. I believe that when the profession includes a range of ethnicities
A person’s goals can usually be tied back to the values they obtain in life- whether it be money, success, family, etc. With this in mind, a goal I carry with utmost importance is an aspiration to help others in a way that leaves a lasting impression on their lives.
Picture yourself with a toothache or someone with poor hygiene and knowing you cannot do anything to change it without a dentist. A dentist is specialized individual that treats the diseases and conditions that affect the oral cavity.
Introduction: In Canada, general dental health is not part Canada’s national system of health insurance (Medicare) (1) except for some dental surgical procedures that are performed at hospitals. Since Oral health does not come under the Health Act about ninety-five percent of the oral health care services are offered on a fee-for-service basis. Oral health care is under provincial or territorial jurisdiction like other health care services and publically financed dental care programs provide the remaining five percent of oral health care services (2). Thus, majority of Canadians receive oral health via privately owned dental clinics. Privately owned dental care gives these services providers control over dental service charges, types of available treatment for the patients and number of follow-up appointment for treatments or routine care. Service users pay for the dental expenses from their own pockets or utilize insurance coverage (1).
Positive results have been seen on periodic checkups and most of the patients didn’t complain. One patient suffered from plaque deposition on abutment teeth due to insufficient oral hygiene. Gold copings protect root surface but are expensive which makes the treatment overall expensive. Most of the time canines are used as abutments because they are frequently the last teeth to be lost in the jaw because of their large root surface
In the past, diseased or damaged teeth could not be salvaged and in most cases, had to be pulled out. However, in the last three decades, endodontic dentistry has evolved to quite an extent and today, professionals trained in this specialty can help save teeth and repair any inherent damage. Common endodontic procedures include root canal therapy, fixing of broken teeth and repairing dental trauma.
