Partial Denture Options A partial denture is a removable appliance constructed by a dentist to replace missing teeth. Partial dentures are used in an area of the mouth where fixed, non-removable appliances are neither practical nor feasible. Constructing partial dentures takes approximately one to four visits depending on the type of appliance chosen. The dentist recommends the partial denture options best suited to his patient's aesthetic, functional and financial needs. Conventional Partial Denture A conventional removable partial denture has a metal framework with thin metal clasps, which fit around the abutments - the natural or crowned teeth next to the missing teeth. The clasps hold the partial denture securely in place while allowing easy removal for cleaning. The metal framework is covered with gum-colored plastic that contains the replacement teeth. Barring accidents, a partial denture can last five years or longer. Dental insurance policies typically place a five-year limitation on replacement of prosthetic appliances, such as dentures. Semi-Precision Partial Denture For personal or professional reasons, some people do not want visible clasps on their partial dentures. Clasps are not needed to maintain stability with a semi-precision denture. Interlocking male/female attachments placed on the denture and abutment teeth, which are usually crowned, hold the denture securely in place and provide stability. Flexite Partial Denture Made of semi-translucent flexible nylon thermo-plastic with no metal wire or clasps, these dentures allow the color of the patient's gum to show through. Flexite partials are virtually indestructible, rarely require adjusting, and have clasps (made of the same material as... ... middle of paper ... ...ls during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy interfere with the body's ability to fight infections such as periodontitis. Bacteria collect beneath the gingiva, or gum tissue, and cause inflammation, infection and destruction of bone and connective tissue. Microorganisms found in the oral cavity are similar to those in the female genital tract. The biochemical processes involved in periodontitis are identical to those related to premature delivery and low birth weight in infants. Preventive Measures Schedule regular dental cleanings and examinations to detect an infection before it reaches the destructive stage. Maintain scrupulous oral hygiene at all times, but especially before becoming pregnant and throughout the pregnancy. Not only is this beneficial to both the mother and the fetus, good oral hygiene can have a positive impact on the outcome of a pregnancy.
A dental hygienist is a very important role in any dental office. As stated by a dental assistant, “Dental hygienists work closely with the dentist as well as hands on with the patients. They assist dentists with operative procedures such as fillings and extractions, and making molds of patients teeth” (Wilson, Jennifer). A large part of their job is teaching patients proper dental care to ensure a lifetime of healthy teeth. This includes proper brushing and flossing techniques. According to the job out look, a day as a dental hygienist can include taking x-rays, cleaning and scaling teeth, charting treatment plans, putting sealants on teeth, taking impressions of teeth and completing information about the patient’s oral and medical history (Summary). In some states dental hygienist are allowed to give local anesthetic and place and remove sutures (Delivering Local Anesthetic). According to advantages of becoming a dental hygienist, hygienists spend more hands on time with the patients than the dentist does. These are some of the instruments that dental hygienists use on a daily basis: toothbrush, scaler, mirror, ultrasonic scaler, explorer, suction, computer, salvia ejector, rubber cap polisher, dental models, x-ray machine and probe. The dental hygienist uses a toothbrush to remove soft plaque from the teeth. Plaque is a soft coating on the teeth that contain bacteria. The bacteria can cause tooth decay and gum disease. The amount of plaque on the teeth gives the hygienist an idea of how well the daily brushing and flossing of the patient’s teeth are completed on a regular basis. The scaler is used to remove hardened plaque or calculus from the teeth. The mirror is used to look closely at the surfaces of the teeth a...
o Please describe a time when you performed a thorough head, neck and oral exam and the findings had a significant impact on how you proceeded with the dental hygiene process of care. Annette was performing her usual head, neck, and oral exam on a patient and found an enlarged thyroid. She recommended to the patient that she go see her primary care physician to get a better diagnosis. The patient went to her primary care physician and was told there was probably nothing. Later, the patient returned to the dental office and saw Annette and told her what the physician said.
According to the American Dental Association, gum disease, also referred to as periodontal disease, occurs when the tissues that support and surround your teeth become infected. Many people are unaware they even have gum disease, because it isn’t a painful disease. Periodontal disease is caused by a film of sticky bacteria called plaque forming on the teeth.
A good dental hygiene is very important for everybody no matter the age. A clean mouth will help us to stay more immune to infection and other risks that periodontitis can cause. Remember to take the time to brush and floss your teeth properly every day to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It is never too early or too late to begin taking care of your

Professionalism in the dental profession refers to our responsibilities and obligations that exists throughout our entire dental career. “Professional competence is the habitual and judicious use of communication, knowledge, technical skills, clinical reasoning, emotions, values and reflection in daily practice for the benefit of the individual and community being served (Kirk, 2007).” A health professional must be able to regulate their own behavior and comply with a code of ethics in professional practice. Fundamental principles of professionalism include primacy of patient welfare, social justice and patient autonomy (Kirk, 2007).
I am currently studying at CFCC to get into the Dental Assisting program. Upon graduating, I would like to acquire a job at an orthodontists office. The employment for this occupation is actually expected to grow much faster than average; between 2008 and 2018, employment is expected to grow 36 percent. The job demand in the Cape Fear area seems to be fairly higher than other areas in North Carolina, and higher than some other states as well.
Disease Incidence: The number of decayed, missing, and filled surfaces that occur over a given period of time. Two different examinations are required to determine incidence- one before, and one at the end of a selected time period.

Periodontal disease also known as periodontitis is the inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth caused by specific microorganisms resulting in progressive destruction of the periodontal ligament and alveolar bone with pocket formation, recession, or both. This includes gingivitis, which is the inflammation of the gingiva and is the milder form. This later on progresses to periodontitis and is a more severe form. Periodontitis affects the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and cementum.
Denture teeth can be made of acrylic poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or composite resins. PMMA is a polymer - a material made the from joining of methyl methacrylate monomers. Properties of PMMA include resistance to abrasion, chemical stability and a high boiling point. (Jun Shen et al. 2011). However, weak flexure and impact strength of PMMA are of concern as they account for denture failure. (Bolayir G, Boztug A and Soygun K. 2013). Composite denture teeth are made of a three distinct phases - filler, matrix and coupling agents. Out of the types of composite teeth available, nano-filled composite teeth are preferred. Composite teeth have a PMMA coating around the tooth and a high content of filler particles. This gives them strength, higher resistance to forces than acrylic teeth and provides compete polymerization due to the PMMA coating. (Anusavice, K. J., Phillips, R. W., Shen, C., & Rawls, H. R, 2012). If the interface between the PMMA denture base and PMMA or composite teeth was weak, the denture will not be able to sustain occlusal forces, making the base-teeth interface, an entity of significance.
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gingiva and alveolar bone. Periodontal disease increases in prevalence and severity as people age. Periodontal disease is precursored by gingivitis.
This is done using the branch of dentistry called prosthodontics which establishes the goals of dentistry by replacing the missing teeth and oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes. Prosthodontics is either removable prosthodontics or fixed prosthodontics. Fixed prosthodontics is the branch
