Hello my name is Carolina Castro and today I’m going to inform you about the importance of brushing and flossing your teeth and the appropriate technique to do it. Since I was a child my mom used to tell me “you needed to brush your teeth at least twice a day because if you don’t do so, you are going loose them forever, and guess what, once you lose them they won’t grow back again”. I am pretty sure that for some of you this words sound very familiar, right? As I grew up I started to wonder why my mom always tell me brushing and flossing is so important? And that is the main reason why I decided to become a dental hygienist, in order to be able to teach my patients its importance. Brushing our teeth will only take few minutes each day but will help our teeth and gums stay healthy. Consider the mouth as a doorway to the body and periodontal disease affects the entire body. Periodontal disease is commonly known as gum disease. If we do not brush and floss our teeth correctly bacterial plaque will build up on our teeth. Plaque is a white to yellow sticky film that coats the teeth. When bacterial plaque builds up it put us at risk for gingivitis. Gingivitis is an early stage of periodontal disease associated with bleeding and swollen gums, and if it is left untreated, it can lead to periodontitis, which affects the gum, bone and supporting tissue of the teeth ending up on losing our teeth. Some studies have shown that the bacteria associated with periodontal disease can enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory disease have all been linked to gum disease. There are plenty of warning signs that are easy to catch to see if we could be at risk for gum disease. Having red, swollen, or tender gums, bleeding while brushing or flossing, loose teeth, bad breath, sensitivity to cold or hot food or drinks all of these are for sure signs that we need to get our teeth and gums checked by a dental practitioner. Periodontal disease is preventable, controllable, and treatable. Brushing and flossing combined with getting a checkup and professional cleaning twice-yearly by a dental hygienist will control the accumulation of plaque in most people. Just brushing your teeth is never enough; brushing your teeth correctly and for an efficient amount of time is what prevents cavities and diseases. I would like to present you some statistics about the prevalence of dental caries (dental decay) among adults 20 to 64 years of age, from the National Institute of Dental and Carcinofacial Research. We tend to believe that as we grow up the prevalence of caries will decrease but that is not the case, as you can see it is actually greater as we mature. When brushing your teeth it is a good idea to use a brush with soft bristles, which is gentle with your gums. A tooth brush with hard bristles will wash away your gums and teeth become very sensitive. Toothbrushes should be replace every 2 to 3 months, or sooner if the bristles are bent or frayed. It is also recommended to brush for at least 2 minutes after each meal and at least 2 times a day. In order to effectively brush our teeth, it is important to follow some steps. First brush the chewing surface of your teeth with a back and forth motion to remove all the food particles. Next gently brush your teeth in a circular motion with the bristles at a 45 angle degree toward the gum. Do the same on the inner surfaces of your upper teeth. Then repeat this same steps on your lower teeth. Finally, brush your tongue from back to front to remove all odor-producing bacteria. Remember that 90% of bad breath is cause by the hidden bacteria in our tongue. After brushing rinse your mouth and check to see if you missed any places. Now we are going to discuss the proper flossing technique.
A common question to our dental practitioners is, when should we floss, after or before brushing? And the answer is that the sequence make no difference as long as you do your job. Ok let’s talk about flossing. Flossing also helps to remove the plaque that forms on your teeth, it removes the plaque from the areas where the toothbrush cannot reach, and this areas are along the gum line and between your teeth. And as I already said, if we do not remove this plaque, guess what, we will end up with decay and infected gums. To effectively floss your teeth start by taking 12 inches of floss. Slide the floss between your teeth curving around each tooth making a C shape, make 3 scoops on each side of every tooth. Go slightly under the gum line. Repeat this process with the lower teeth, and don’t forget to floss behind your back teeth. This teeth are very important to properly floss since this are the hardest areas to reach with the toothbrush. A good dental hygiene is very important for everybody no matter the age. A clean mouth will help us to stay more immune to infection and other risks that periodontitis can cause. Remember to take the time to brush and floss your teeth properly every day to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It is never too early or too late to begin taking care of your
teeth.
A hygienist then asks what polisher flavor the patient would like. What the polisher does is remove any fragments of plaque remaining and surface stains on the teeth. I can remember coming to school and hearing all my classmates talk about how much they hated going to the dentist. Going to the dentist was one thing that I have always loved to do. The sound of the tools and just the smell of the clinic was never a bad atmosphere to me, I actually enjoy the dentist. Laura was my first dental hygienist from as far back as I can remember, and she had the whitest teeth I have ever seen! I have honestly came to the conclusion that I am obsessed with teeth. With this being said, I have always felt and known that I wanted to be a dental hygienist. I am currently in my first year here at Community College getting my preq for dental hygiene. I always get the question, “Why would you want to look in somebody’s mouth all day?” After I hear this question and then I start thinking to myself. I want to be a dental hygienist because first of all someone has got to do it and secondly, I think smiles light up rooms and if I can help get more smiles in this world then that is what I am going to do. With seeking my career in dental hygiene I have great hopes of being able to help people understand and find compassion in caring for their teeth and inspiring them as Laura inspired me.
There are many opportunities out there for hygienists to deliver the health care message to not only the individuals that cannot afford to go to the dental office, but also the individuals like older citizens and disabled individuals and to different schools around the nation. With that being said, it is not only just the hygienist job to provide that information. Other healthcare professionals are expected to come together and commonly agree on accurate information to specific individuals. “Healthcare professions, including dental hygienists, nurses and physicians should be communicating with each other and working collaboratively for common health care goals. This is the way that we should be practicing and also educating the future” (Pera). It is important to educate children now and get it in their heads that taking care of their teeth and gums and also their body in general is a good way to be successful not just now, but in the future as well. In order to do so, all health care professions are required to step up and come together to inform the young children in schools as well as the underprivileged people who lack the knowledge

Periodontal disease involves series of infections that occur within gum tissues of the mouth and the surrounding of teeth. Some infections cause simple inflammation of the gum tissues and in some cases it causes server damage within the soft tissues and bones, and a possibility of losing teeth. Periodontal disease can be prevented if people were more educated on how to keep healthy gums and teeth. People need to also understand that the way you live your lifestyle can also have effect on your health as far as oral hygiene.
Another preventive way to help children build stronger teeth is water fluoridation prevents 2/3rd of children from them not getting cavities. (Evans par. 6) Fluoridation benefits children and let alone fifty percent of the dental bills were cut in price. (Evans par.6) The future is looking bright for the children getting better dental and oral health services. Approximately 8.7 million children are expected to gain some form of dental benefits by 2018. (Evans par.8) Regular preventive dental care, such as cleaning and regularly brushing and flossing, improve the overall health and brightens up your life. (Wallace par.1) Keeping up on the regular cleaning at the dental office, which is once every six months, helps out tremendously but some people need more then twice a year. (Payne par.5)
A healthy mouth not only facilitates nutrition of the physical body, but it also develops confidence and sensation of health. Oral conditions effect the general health and disease. Oral hygiene prevents bad breathe, gum diseases and tooth decay. Dentists can diagnose and treat oral affliction at the initial level. This help adults and children to maintain excellent dental health during their lifetime.
When you are practicing good dental hygiene, you will surely be in a much better oral health. The problem is that a lot of us neglect the proper taking care of our teeth and gum. This is when most oral diseases start and also the reason why the dental health category is a multi-million, if not a multi-billion, dollar industry.
Children should be taught how to brush their teeth and be encouraged to have good dental hygiene to prevent cavities and any other dental problems. They should be taught about good hygiene such as hand washing to prevent germs.
In conclusion, it’s recommended that patients brush two-three times a day two minutes long to insure that most of the bacteria is removed from the teeth, gums, and tongue also. Flossing after every meal should also be done regularly to avoid foods that get stuck between the teeth. There are many kinds of toothpaste, but not all contain fluorine. Its important that you choose one that does have fluorine because it rebuilds tooth enamel and strengthens the tooth too.
Over time as individuals age and are faced with access to care issues they may begin to neglect their oral health. As time passes between dental hygiene cleanings or dentist visits the presence of oral disease may begin to increase.
The prevention of periodontitis is straightforward for patients. The first step in prevention is to assure that the patient is brushing twice a day utilising the proper brushing technique. Patients who fear the contraction of periodontitis are not encouraged to brush too much however, as excessive brushing with poor technique can lead to other oral problems such as the reduction of the gums (gingival recession). Brushing at least twice a day help inhibit the growth of unwanted bacteria and prevents plaque, and thus tartar from forming. Patients who wish to prevent periodontitis should also floss daily. Flossing daily includes the spaces between each tooth, as well as behind the last two molars on the mandibular and maxillary arches. Getting a good oral health can show the condition of body and reduce the getting other diseases in our body. Some reports have shown that periodontal disease has a relationship with a stroke, heart disease. Pregnant with periodontal disease also get a higher chance having low birth weight babies. Oral infections are the symptoms of some of the diseases. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000)Furthermore, a survey found that the dental decay and poor oral hygiene are the potential risk factors of having pneumonia. Also, a better oral health can reduce the occurrence of pneumonia. (Azarpazhooh & Leake, 2006) Maintaining oral health not only a matter of oral, but also related to our health of whole body. In addition, people with loss of tooth may not chew food enough, which may cause the digestive problems of digestive system. People may not underestimated the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene.
Like any other medical care, dental care is important for our good and healthy life.
