Not many opportunities are given to a black man in third world countries. When the sun starts to set and the stars come out people shadows will reveal the darkness within them. At night all you see is the corruption form politician, guns in the streets lurking for its next victim. The word opportunity in South Africa is an uncommon word that's never used in everyday conversation. People all over the world dream of coming to a developed country just like America, where opportunity never seems to run out. America is the beacon of opportunity, you have free education, many jobs to work from, and there is someone that's always willing to help no matter the color of your skin, ethnicity, and religion.
Furthermore, since 1931 when foreigners started
America has always seen as the symbolic ideal country of prosperity and equality. This is the reason why people come to America hoping to become successful, but in matter of fact we all have an equal plan field to be successful is not entirely true. For there are social boundaries that keep use limited based upon our own status. Whether we are born of a low class or of a high class the possibility of economic mobility in a sense are predetermined by two factors of social class and success together they both affecting one’s another opportunity of success. In order to achieve success, we must know that it is made up of two main concepts and they are fortune and position. But when a person is limited by their class prohibiting them to achieve success, the point of trying is meaningless. However, there is a way to break the construct that keep groups stuck in the lower-class and is through education. Education gives more opportunities for success to the individuals and since education is very important, culture and the government should focus more directly upon this to reach economic stability. Class standing directly affects economic success in America by limiting a person’s chance of success however; one can overcome by focusing more upon education and culture.
...tion, and the economic status of a historically deprived people certainly won’t be an exception. As many successful black entrepreneurs have proven, it is very much possible for good businessmen to succeed greatly despite the opposition, and there is still plenty of room for success.
According to the article, “Study: Even for college-educated blacks, road to full-time work is rocky,” many African Americans are unemployed, even if they have a college degree (Bowean). Some African Americans cannot pass the interview process because of racism, stereotypes, and prejudice (Bowean). A common perception of African Americans is that they are not smart enough to work at a job or own a business (Bowean). “Among recent black graduates ages 22 to 27, the jobless rate in 2013, the last year for which data are available, was 12.4 percent compared with 5.6 percent for whites (Bowean).” In fact, some of these African Americans do not have the finances to support their families’ needs. Eventually, many of these families become homeless with no money, food, clothing, or shelter (Bowean). Homelessness can then cause these poor people to feel desperate and hopeless about their
The majority of blacks in America still live in extreme, deep poverty and a lot of them never receive a proper education. According to Phil Jackson’s article “Remembering the Millions the American Dream Left,” 30% black Americans in Illinois live in poverty while only 8% white Americans do. One way African Americans can move out of poverty is by getting a better education but because the blacks have such low income, they can’t afford a better education. Therefore, there is a rare chance they will ever get out of poverty.
I believe that is very hard to be a black person in America even after years of “freedom”. The media plays a big part in helping perpetuate stereotypes of the black man in society. He is often only shown as an athlete, rapper or criminal and this helps society perpetuate the idea that he is only those things. Even though many people want to believe that we have moved past the societal levels of discrimination and prejudice, it has only moved to invisible prejudice and discrimination. Society has not become less prejudice, but has only found new ways to hide its prejudice. This can be detrimental on the black man/woman’s self-determination because he/she is fighting this double-consciousness. He/she has to constantly debunk the negative stereotypes and stigma associated with being a black person in America. Having to do this can make the black man lose himself mentally, socially, and physically because he cannot be who he truly is. He is forced assimilate himself into the dominant culture and consequently, he loses a part of himself. On the contrary, he is able to understand things from both sides of the
In America, every citizen is guaranteed life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Although each person is given these rights, it is how each person uses them that defines how successful they will be in America. There are several obstacles that some Americans face on their pursuit of happiness. In this country’s past, Americans lived by a very specific set of beliefs that valued the importance of hard work, faith, and family. As time progressed and America began to evolve as a nation, this capitalistic society no longer devoted itself to family and faith but rather success, and the pursuit of prosperity. The shift from dependence on tradition towards a society that values success and how people struggle to b successful when society makes it difficult marks a common theme in Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun. Two of the main characters in this story Lena Younger (Mama) and her son Walter Lee directly reflect the shift from tradition to a focus on success and capital and the struggles they face in regards to racism. Mama and Walter Lee’s contrasting values about the American dream and the way in which they pursue their own dreams while facing racism exemplifies the shift from valuing tradition like in previous generations in America, to valuing success and prosperity like in more current generations.
America is not the illustrated land of opportunity to all. The statement provided that, a land giving opportunity to all is judgmental for many concerning reasons. For one, America is known as a country where people of various races are informed of great dreams that seem reachable, but the chances of an immigrant moving to America and starting a new life are slim. Throughout American history, the opportunity to create something has always been difficult and will sincerely remain that way no matter the sacrifices a person must give up on in their life.
I walked around unsteadily all day like a lost baby, far away from its pack. Surrounded by unfamiliar territory and uncomfortable weather, I tried to search for any signs of similarities with my previous country. I roamed around from place to place and moved along with the day, wanting to just get away and go back home. This was my first day in the United States of America.
America was never a system intended to help the blacks in it prosper. America throughout history and even present day has aspired to keep white people on top. Denying blacks bank loans, putting them in certain neighborhoods that were not as well kept up or safe, giving blacks unequal education that is not as advanced as whites, being denied certain jobs based on the color of your skin, and more. Institutional racism is so common that you almost cannot catch the discrimination. As Hansberry depicted in her play, racism and discrimination can come from anywhere, and the barriers set in blacks paths denying them their American Dream can be very tiny to very colossal. Structural inequalities, lack of cultural awareness and institutional racism are just a few challenges that affect blacks in the workplace (Dade et al.). As Beneatha became more culturally aware of African heritage through the direct influence of Asagai, she became more culturally aware of the cultural assimilation from Africans to African Americans, “integration was not to be equated with accommodationist, paradigms or cultural assimilation” (Saber 452). Due to white fear
America, “The Land of the Free”, “The Home of the Brave”, “The Melting Pot”, “The Land of Milk and Honey”, “The Land Across the Pond”, “The Western World”, “Uncle Sam”, and most importantly “The Land of Opportunity”. America is still “The Land of Opportunity” because there is much more freedom in America than most other countries. There are no caste systems to limit what someone who is in America can do. Additionally an American’s destiny is created by his/her own choices, not the choices of his/her family or peers. America is a country founded by immigrants for immigrants, and although the Land of Opportunity has suffered an economic crisis in the last decade, it still maintains its reputation for being the greatest country in the world. The United States is still “The Land of Opportunity” because there are no caste systems, one’s destiny is made by his/her choices, and American freedoms are a part of everyday life.
Life is full of experiences and exploration. In life everyone have something that has changed the way they recognize things. Most things change a person’s perception because of the experience they had in the past. I never imagined that my life would ever change. Being born in a different country and end up in a different place could be very hard and frustrating.
Everybody grows up in a different place. For some people, including African-Americans, they grew up in a poor neighbor. You’re probably wondering what growing up in a poor neighborhood has to do with anything. Well, let me tell you this. According to Congressperson Danny Davis, he said that 70% of black men who are between ages 18-45 that grew up in a neighborhood with poverty especially in Chicago are ex-offenders. This means that because these African-American men grew in poverty, they’re more likely to commit crimes. And from the U.S. Department of Commerce, a total of 26.2 percent, or 10.8 million African Americans grew up in poverty. Knowing all this, over 5.5 million African-Americans
People usually do not have a concrete plan for their future, so they do not know what direction they are going to take; it is very difficult for people to set themselves up for success when they have no real support system put in place. They often have negative people around them that will bring them down, too, which will lead to a lack of motivation, and this will set them up for failure, especially when they try to set goals that are not clear enough or realistic. People are usually not motivated or disciplined enough, use too many excuses, and get overwhelmed by obstacles, causing them to fail.
When Americans moved westward opportunities and conflicts emerged on many people. African Americans conflict was as a migrant became slaves and faced racism their opportunities consisted of working on a farm and going new communities to better themselves. As an American Indian they didn't have opportunities it was devastating something's that happened to the Native people was they lost their main food source due to the building of railroad, they clashed with other settlers to fight for their land, and many died due to violence, disease, and poverty. However, for settlers, railroad owners, and railroad workers they were able to have opportunities because of the railroad work and much land that they gained from moving the American Indians and
The American Dream is a circumstance for the people in America to believe what they can do for their own and take advantage of every opportunity that gave them the chance to fight and live on. That advantage will lead to a fact that life just flows on how the world has been going on, and on how the citizens of America reacts to it. Every individual in America have different perspective in life, to the point when they will look for a solution on how they are going to approach for their dream to live comfortably. American Dream is a dream that makes people experience challenges in life due to diversified inequalities that exist in the country.
