Have you ever been lonely, depressed and ice-cream-eating-tear-dripping single? Then you should try online dating. The number of single people in the U.S. is 54,250,000 (17% of Americans are single) but, 49,250,000 of those single people have participated in online dating. That is almost 91% of all single people in the United States and 15% of all Americans as a whole, in the U.S., use online dating today. The history of online dating, how they were back in 1996-2006 vs. how online dating is 2007-present and how online dating can go so wrong and how it can go so right, are all ways to analysis change of online dating in 1996-2016.

This movie is about two business rivals that anonymously flirt online they eventually fall in love and meet only to see it is their competitor then later realize they both missed the person that they got to know via. email, meet again and start to form in offline relationship. To return back to the point, this movies purpose was to the word out about internet dating, after many more people started to uses it to meet strangers. Even though the numbers got bigger it was still nowhere near where it is today, 91% of all single people in the U.S. use online dating. Many people today use these dating apps for one night stands, and others use it as a chance to find “The One” before it’s too late. The “Love, Internet Style” by David Brooks and “Why Jane Austen Would Approve Online Dating” by Elizabeth Kantor both discuss certain aspects of online romance and draw conclusions about online dating’s effectiveness. Brooks’ piece informs the reader of similarities and differences between online romance and courtship rituals of the past, with particular focus on how men and women behave in online dating situations. Kantor’s informative piece uses comparison and contrast primarily to highlight comparisons between online dating and assembly balls from Jane Austen’s novels. In Brooks’ essay, his thesis states that “[t]he online dating world is superficially cynical. . . But love is what this is all about.
In “Technology Isn’t Ruining Modern Dating--Humans are” (New Statesman Network, August 7, 2015), Barbara Speed argues the success of online dating websites did not cause people to pursue hook-up culture, but instead the culture influenced companies to cater the needs of already interested people. Essentially, Speed characterizes online dating as a business. If people did not want such a fast paced dating world they wouldn't download the apps to find so-called lovers. Personally, I have never tried online dating myself; therefore, never put myself in a situation where I was judged romantically in a matter of seconds behind a screen. Additionally, people no longer want to spend too much of their time and effort with a person when they can go on their phones and talk to someone with similar intentions in a matter of hours. For instance, Slater’s case study, Jacob, right after he was dumped by a long term girlfriend, he instantly revisited his old dating profile and quickly started seeing girl after girl. However, he has a history of being a passive, negotiator, and low striving guy looking for a girl to fill a void in his life. There is no doubt that recent technological advancements have changed the way humans interact with one another in the 21st century. Through email, text messages, and social networking sites, we are able to get in touch with people all over the world in a much faster and more efficient manner than in previous years. Since modern technology has become such an integral part of our everyday lives, it is certainly not uncommon for two people to meet and connect with each other via the Internet. Members of this relatively new subculture of online daters invest a great deal of time and energy into their romantic affairs. In fact, according to Robert Epstein’s “The Truth About Online Dating,” advertising materials from the largest online dating services suggest that over 50 million Americans are currently using such services, and that they are wholly satisfied with the results (34). Unfortunately, however, the controversial subject of online relationships in modern society is frequently misrepresented by the media. Many films and television shows exaggerate the risks associated with online dating, choosing to highlight extreme examples of lies and deception for the sake of maintaining their dramatic quality. Other forms of media tend to romanticize online dating, consequently giving Internet users unrealistic expectations for their own relationships. Whether it depicts the frightening or idealized side of online dating, popular culture makes a conscious effort to feature sensationalized stories in order to appeal to a target audience that relies solely on entertainment. As a result, the truth about Internet dating is not adequately conveyed, which ultimately results in the public’s distorted image of such online practices.
Ansari states in his article that because of technology Americans have never had as many romance options as they currently do allowing increased interaction. However, he does note that with all these options there are still downsides to online dating, much like medicine has its side effects. In the article there is a section titled “Where Bozos are Studs” Within this section we see him imply that the internet can make someone feel too empowered because of the many options they have. Also, Ansari points out that it is possible that the simplest of qualities could disqualify you from finding your soul mate on these dating sites. For example a man saw a woman who had similar qualities but she was a Red Sox fan so he continued to search. Ansari also expands more on the topic of dating in genera. He speaks on the phases of a relationship, the passionate phase and the sometimes unattainable compassionate phase. From a boy asking a girl’s parents permission to date their daughter, to today when people resort to dating apps and websites like, Okcupid or Tinder. The uses of these dating sites and apps are greatly influenced. In 2008, only three percent of Americans used an online dating site, now that has increased to nine percent (Ambrose and Palm). The whole concept of meeting a potential girlfriend or boyfriend in a public setting is no longer a trend in society. Instead, it is no secret that the dating process has changed, the real question is what caused this.

The book focuses on the pitfalls and benefits of using online tools like apps and websites to pursue romantic relationships. The book connects to readers of all walks of life by addressing why we date: to find another person who can share a deep connection with us. But how we get there can be as much defined by technology as it is by generational preferences and traits.

Due to the advances in technology in recent years, online dating has developed into a resource that has become culturally accepted and has advanced in many ways, but with that comes mate choice, safety concerns, and the outlook on online dating.

When thinking back on my past experiences in the dating scene, it’s crazy to see how much things have changed over the years. About ten years ago, I would have never thought that online dating would have grown to be as popular as it is today. It was considered a risky and almost taboo thing to do in the beginning. Now it seems that online dating services are just about everywhere. From the bigger dating services providers, such as E-Harmony and Zoosk, to the smaller services such as online personal classifieds, social media, and phone apps, it’s easier than ever to find and meet people who are interested in dating. I have dated online myself, even in the beginning stages of the online dating scene, and have had both good and bad experiences.

In the twenty-first century, we use the internet for almost everything that we do. We use search engines such as Bing or Google to find information. Websites like Netflix and Hulu allow us to watch shows and movies without an expensive cable or satellite subscription. Social networks provide a new way to communicate with friends and family.
