Favoritism, Poverty, and lack of caring for education. There is no doubt that teachers will pick favorites. Teacher’s do not always have to tell you who their favorite student is because sometimes you can just tell by the teachers actions towards another student. Poverty is a huge issue in today’s school system. Schools do not have any money to pay for new or updated books, the schools are ran down, students don’t have the financial and mental support from their parents and school. When there is no financial support, then why would the students even want to go to school or try to succeed school? Schools that have a higher rate of poverty that can barely pay the teachers cause students to have less than desirable grades whereas students that are located where poverty is low with a better amount of funding have a better chance at having better grades. In Eudora Welty’s essay “One Writers Beginnings” the author talks about how when she was two or three years old that every room in her house always had books in it and was there to read anytime she wanted. Welty describes how there were bookcases in the living room, that was also called “the library” and that there were encyclopedia tables and a dictionary stand under the windows in the dining room, she said that some of the books that she grew up arguing around the dining room table was Unabridged Webster, the Columbia Encyclopedia, and Comptons Pictured Encyclopedia. However, the poor districts are required to pay the same tax rate that the wealthier districts pay but are unable to properly fund their schools whereas the wealthier districts are comfortably able to fund their schools and are much less affected by the tax rate compared to their lower-income counterparts. The Foundations Program was created to give freedom to districts to fund their own schools. The thought behind this program was that if a district wants to improve its schools, it can fund them itself rather than rely on the state. The problem is, while this program worked fine for wealthier districts, the poorer districts still lacked the proper funding to improve these schools. A way to fix this issue could be for all districts to work together and create partnerships in order to create one big fund to aid all schools in said districts.
Morosely, people hitting poverty level are truly given zero opportunities to advance their education. In America, it 's not common that the A+ education is given to you. It 's not entirely easy to land the greatest job ever with just a high school diploma. But, the cost of college has made the difference between having a job that pays well, and having a job that pays immensely for people living in poverty. Legality aside, this Frankenstein remains riddled with flaws. Not all the poor students in New York City public schools are doing badly. That indicates something about the students who fail. I am a progeny of the New York City Public School system. From kindergarten to 12th grade my education has been a publicly funded affair. Ever since elementary school, I have seen many of my classmates flourish in the classroom while others have failed. The students of my elementary school were generally of the same economic and cultural (Italian) background, yet they varied in performance levels. I have found that some of my classmates just displayed no interest in school. Teachers and the system can only do so much. If a student does not care to learn, he or she will not learn no matter how good the education being given to him is. As to why the student is resistant to learning, that is an issue with little correlation to the quality of public schools.
Students who live below the poverty line have less motivation to succeed, and their parents are less inclined to participate in their child’s education, often because the parents cannot provide support for their children. The fact that students from lower income families fail to perform as well in school holds no dispute. Growing up with less money has been proven to create a significant disadvantage. Those struggling to pay their bills often are forced to cut back the money spent on food, leaving kids with only the option of cheaper food with poor nutritional value, or sometimes skipping meals. Proper school funding is one of the keys to having a successful school. Americans believe that funding is the biggest problem in public schools. School improvements revolve around funding. There needs to be funding not only in the successful schools but also the schools that aren’t doing as well. In documentary, Waiting for Superman, it talks about how smaller class sizes will help students. Funding is what will help the smaller class sizes. State funding mechanisms are subject to intense political and economic scrutiny (Leonard). Studies have shown that funding is inversely related to accreditation levels (Leonard). School funding needs to be increased, but there must be accountability as well.
Some states want to have separation when it comes to the income of these schools. States argue that high class, wealthy, school districts should have more money than the lower class districts, because of the tax payers wants or because there are better opportunities for students to grow in the wealthier areas. According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than 50 percent of lower end schools are not receiving the amount of money they should get from the state funds (U.S. Department of Education). This is what is preventing school districts in these areas from helping students with their education. The schools are forced to cut back on programs such as extracurricular activities that are suppose to encourage students to be active, or they would have to cut back on supplies where in some cases there are not enough textbooks for each student to have his or her own. The U.S. Department of Education also stated that teachers that are less paid and have less years teaching are often the ones dealing with the students in poverty. (U.S. Department of Education). This only prolongs the problem with children receiving the proper education. If they are taught by teachers who don’t know what they are teaching or those who don’t have enough experience, then the students are not going to learn the correct information or any information at all. I also experience the lack of concern of other teachers, not taking the time and dedication to teach their students to excel. In part, I strongly believe it had to with the culture differences that existed within the schools that I attended and the neighborhood I grew up. At times, I felt being part of a minority group created an environment, which I perceived teachers not to care about my education needs or whether I could succeed in life.
