Fifteen year old Melba Patillo Beals was an ordinary girl, until she’s chosen with eight other students to integrate Central High in Little Rock, Arkansas. They are named the Little Rock and fight through the school year, while students and segregationists are threatening and harassing them. Warriors Don’t Cry—a memoir of Beals’ personal experience—should be taught in schools because it teaches students to treat each other equally and to be brave, while it also shows the struggle of being an African-American in the 1950s. Another lesson taught in the retelling is that everyone can make a change.
The Wampanoag have a different view on women, who partake in the labor as much as men. Bethia is likewise, required to perform chores around the house, such as caring for Solace, setting the table, and gathering water from the well. The difference is that women are not respected regardless of the work they perform. Another large gap between Puritan philosophy and that of the Wampanoag, is that girls should not interact with boys, even at the young age of 12. Puritan society places so much importance on “reputation” that it causes Bethia to believe she has killed her mother by sinning simply by enjoying Caleb’s presence. My personal beliefs left me thoroughly disgusted with everything about the Puritan way of raising children, and Puritan society as a whole. The degrading of females, the purity and harsh simplicity of life, as well as a complete assuredness in their own superiority, all led me to believe that growing up in such a society would not only be miserable, but produce people who always hold themselves as “holier- than-thou”. She was willing to let go of her pride and commitment to only be with each other in a marriage so her family could live in peace. For example, Casey says, “It ain’t right, me going up there. You’re my wife” (Offutt 143). Casey didn’t want to be with anyone else, besides his wife. Although Beth told Casey to do this for their family, she didn't throw the incident in his face for being with another woman nor become angry and spiteful.
Warriors don’t cry is a story of the Little Rock Nine who went to Central High School; an all-white school with hopes to integrate blacks and whites into non segregated schools. The story mainly follows a girl named Melba and what her life was like at the time of going to this school and making a stepping stone into desegregation. However this took place in a time and place where white people were still being very racist towards black people. Some say sending a girl into a school like this is child abuse because these kids suffered death threats, being physically abused, and slandered against. A warrior is a hero, a role-model, fearless, loyal, persevering, brave - there are few that are able to fulfill these standards. Yet Melba Beals, a fifteen year old girl, not only claims this illusive role, but cannot escape it. Through the journey into integration Melba acts as a dynamic juxtaposition, moving from a scared little girl to a fierce soldier, yet never truly satisfied with her position. This conflict arises from her personal, family, and religious values, the impact of integration in Little Rock, and her experiences during her time at Central High. The title Warriors Don't Cry is employed as a command as well as a way of life and later a regret as this memoir progresses.
Society has lead to the inevitable idea of gender roles in not only relationships, but also in everyday life situations. In the upcoming quote, Hella states, ' 'But if a particular man is ever at the mercy of a particular woman—why, he 's somehow stopped being a man. And the lady, then, is more neatly trapped than ever ' ' (125). She explains to David the principle that a woman simply cannot be woman without a man. A woman without a man is destabilizing, since she cannot be given the opportunity of motherhood or of tending to her husband which is a lifestyle greatly defining the 1960s. This is also seen at the beginning of the book, when it is stated that his aunt Ellen moves in with David and his father, after the loss of his mother. Ellen lacking the presence of a man in her life, and the lack of a motherly presence in a house of two males was destabilizing for them all, demonstrating a great importance of gender roles in a family. Therefore, since Ellen moved in with her brother and her nephew, it gave her the opportunity to be a woman; to tend to the needs of a man in this case her brother, and also to the needs of a child, thus offering her a source of stability. War slowly begins to strip away the ideals these boy-men once cherished. Their respect for authority is torn away by their disillusionment with their schoolteacher, Kantorek who pushed them to join. This is followed by their brief encounter with Corporal Himmelstoss at boot camp. The contemptible tactics that their superior officer Himmelstoss perpetrates in the name of discipline finally shatters their respect for authority. As the boys, fresh from boot camp, march toward the front for the first time, each one looks over his shoulder at the departing transport truck. They realize that they have now cast aside their lives as schoolboys and they feel the numbing reality of their uncertain futures.
This is not serious, but is an example of the tolerance we have for others and outsiders. Women are still facing many stereotypes today, and still do not have nearly as much power as men. Though the stereotypes are less serious than in the novel, they still exist widely today.
However, well beneath the surface of the plotline, the viewer can also find himself or herself looking at a struggle for survival that is greatly affected by the roles of genders. Collins asks many questions regarding this; such as “If young girls do not see themselves reflected in media, will this diminish their sense of importance and self-esteem? Will boys conclude that women and girls are unimportant, as well? Will girls lack role models? Will adult women feel disenfranchised? Does the under-representation of women constrict societal perspectives and information in important ways?” (Collins). If Becky had not followed the standard gender role that the frame of time presented itself, she may have seen herself surviving the endeavor, despite almost no chance of her doing so. In all of these pieces of literature, the behavioral norms that are considered appropriate for men and women are tested. In The Yellow Wallpaper, a wife is pushed to insanity, in A Doll’s House, a housewife goes against expectation, in The Great Gatsby, male dominance is pushed to the extreme. Gender roles dictate men and women’s lives. The concept that you must live up to society’s expectations controls men and women’s thoughts and actions, and it must come to an end. All these authors captured a vital lesson to be learned: Men and woman should be treated equally.
She tells the girl to “walk like a lady” (320), “hem a dress when you see the hem coming down”, and “behave in front of boys you don’t know very well” (321), so as not to “become the slut you are so bent on becoming” (320). The repetition of the word “slut” and the multitude of rules that must be obeyed so as not to be perceived as such, indicates that the suppression of sexual desire is a particularly important aspect of being a proper woman in a patriarchal society.
