There are numerous benefits of adding an omega 3 supplement to one’s diet but the most agreed upon benefit and the reason most people do add this supplement to their diet, is its effects on heart disease. As previously mentioned, Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that both lowers LDL and raises HDL. Another benefit of supplementing omega 3 into one’s diet is without adequate amount of omega 3 or if a deficiency of omega 3 exist, it can lead to a variety of serious side effects. This is because omega 3 is vital to many biological activities such as a role in the structure of the bodies cellular membranes, a role in the structure and function of the retina of the eye, and even a role in the function of the central nervous system. If an individual is lacking adequate amounts of omega 3(a deficiency of omega 3) it can result in impaired development of the retina or eye, impaired nervous system development including learning disabilities, growth retardation, and even though its though most mild side effect of an omega 3 deficiency, a dry scaly skin rash (Angelo, par8-10).
